2018 Devaluation
Anyone know when this is expected to hit? Would be good to have a target date to use our remaining miles.
|
Jan 15th apparently.
|
Perfect - same end date as the QR Boutique Sale. Guess we'll have to plan our entire year this weekend!
|
I'm challenged on this one. I only have around 30k miles, and they've said *some* routes would go down as well as up.
I'm expecting the major routes like LHR, SYD, JFK to go sky high - wondering if we might perhaps see minimal deductions on some Asia legs (30k for an India flight is pretty high imo). I have flights booked through to September, so at a loss at what to spend my miles on.. |
I took a screenshot from the old website with the list of routes and miles....if I have time I will do a back to back and post it up.

no no. What I'm saying is I have the current mileage requirments, but the old website format listed all possible routes out. On the new website you have to go through route by route that you want to check.
|
So I just looked at Emirates redemptions for a Dubai > Chennai return, vs the *current* Etihad one (in J). Think Emirates may have a better J product on that route, though.
Emirates = 75,000 miles + AED 2,300 (?!?!?!) Etihad = 52,000 miles + AED 650 Assuming they basically match up to rival airlines... not looking good. --- Interestingly, the F route from Dubai to JFK is actually fairly reasonable on Emirates - and that's a route I had been expecting Etihad to hike. |
Just don't expect anything positive from it and no info until the 15th as they're "Legally" not allowed to say anything :D
I just don't know what to burn 350K miles on and still requalify, I've decided I am going to wait for the new airport and then stick up two fingers if no change |
Might take a while and I may regret it. Options are too slim whilst there is the Embargo with QR and Platinum on Emirates is only really possible if doing the Kangaroo route or living in the UAE so not an option. Air France KLM is meant to be ever improving so may just end up there as eight years makes lifetime...
|
Indeed - I'm just going to have to bear whatever the changes are. I haven't got any good reason to burn my existing miles, so fingers crossed it isn't too tragic... but as you says the silence is very telling.
New terminal has been badly delayed, right? Can't see it being of huge benefit to me, anyway - pretty sure the subcontinent planes will be left in the old one. |

this was part of the EAP plan and the delays to the terminal helped certainly to put pay to them |
I also am on the fence.
However, I have (at today's quotes) enough to get the 75% to buy the 25% I need for a business class redemption on LHR-AUH-BKK return. This is my regular route. But the last devaluation saw roughly a 50% hike in miles/points required. Thus, the circa 230k cost now might rise to 345k (I doubt it will go this high) but EY has already said that upgrades will become more expensive, points wise. I might use my remaining 180k miles today and suffer if it goes against me rather than wait and find out that I have no options other than a cash out.. |

Ah, that's great to hear (and was probably a little obvious!). Hope that is the case - a new (functional) terminal would ease some of the cuts, at least for me. A decent transit experience is vital - and Etihad (and their security lines) currently fail to deliver there.

You have to wonder though what the F lounge plans were, and now are.... There just has to be a bounce back of some sort
Unless, of course, the Emirates Etihad alliance comes true... Emirates offering the good service, Etihad becoming the EasyJet of the Middle East? I mean, please no, but it looks as though that's what they are trying to do! |

Data Points for the devaluation as I have been looking for some specific flights for later in December.
AUH-JFK: First Class Yesterday: Approx 117k-ish / person Today: 136,640 / person SEZ-AUH: Business Class Yesterday: 39,032 / person Today: 52,648 / person Looks like the taxes and fees for the awards stayed the same. Overall not nearly as bad as I had imagined (especially for the AUH-JFK first routes) but still stings non the less! |

London's gone down. Single in J AUH-LHR was 66236, now 62707.
|
While for CGK-MXP upgrade Y to J takes now 8% miles more than before with an Economy Flex ticket, in detail 4% more on the leg CGK-AUH and 12% from AUH to MXP, I spent last December 57,416 miles one way and now it takes 62,100. Devaluation is higher with Classic ticket as requires on average 11% miles more than before. Curious to know whether any route saw a miles requirement reduction and guess the logic behind it.

An hour ago I logged in in trepidation, just to find that I now had 15,000 more miles than I needed :-) Taxes are a little up. Last week it was quoting around 1900 Dhs IIRC and I just paid 2700. However, that is still peanuts compared to BA or Emirates for a one way out of AUH to LON. |

Yes, this is funny. Last week I decided to lock in 4 J one ways for my family for October as the seats were there, surprising as it was school holidays. Initiated an Amex transfer and nothing arrives in the promised 3 days. 5 days in, ie today, the points arrive but I thought I was stuffed. A seemingly small reduction on MAA > AUH (and vice versa).
When you think about it, none of these have *technically* gone down - they've just reduced them by the same amount taxes have gone up, but Etihad gets money this way, rather than you losing miles (and yes, that's the pessimist in me, talking!). In effect, it means if you are *smart* with your miles, you can potentially be better off - if not, you'll be worse off. |
Ok, after a quick scout around it seems to be a bit more rational in a lot of cases.
auh return in Business: Amsterdam 124537 (old) - 125K (new) Dublin (big win for me) 142k (old) - 125K (new) joburg 151k (old) - 132k (new) |

AUH To BKK has increased from 30,687 to 45,630 for Economy (Q Class) to Business.
|
Seems upgrades have taken the brunt
|
Coach prices have gone up quite a bit US<-->India. 58K to 69K one way. JFK-AUH is also up from ~44K to 58K.
Same for India-Europe. |

Same for India-Europe. EDIT: Coach. Sorry I had been looking at J fares. Can't confirm for coach! EDIT 2: Yup, marginal increases on LHR > MAA in coach. Used to be around 38,000 now 40,000. COmpared to what I had been expecting; I'm OK. |
Y doubled in short haul, especially Muscat

Received via email yesterday - only shows the routes with deductions from AUH...

Today's Guest e-statement is very misleading, telling me I could fly return in economy to range of destinations. But the miles they actually quote is for One Way. I wish someone would prod read this stuff...
