Emirates Frequent Flyer Program
I just booked a flight to Thailand via Dubai around Christmas (because Thai Air was sold out from JFK). My travel agent said she could book us confirmed seat assignments only if we joined the Emirates frequent flyer program. Anyone have thoughts on the program? I would otherwise get United miles. I'm currently platinum on Delta.

Make sure you give your UA# to as many agents as possible and make sure it is reflected on your boarding pass. EK is known for taking their sweet time with crediting miles to others FFP's.

Stay with Skywards.
Emirates will be using one of there new A380s on this route as far as DXB, You will soon clock up the miles with them. If you fly j or F out of JFK on the late flight to DXB its Dinner at the Plaza on Emirates as well as the comp pick up and drop off from home. Emirates has low loads on this route thats why the comp dinner on the flight out, its a bit too much food for me.

This is nonsense. Once you've booked and got a PNR you can use the 'manage my booking' function on the website to pick seats without being a Skywards number. Been there, done that.

All you need is your PNR. Next, go to the Emirates website and select your seats, enter your UA or CO FF No., select meal choices and enter the APIS (?) info that the US Nazi Govt requires for your return flight home. It's quite painless. Oh yes, then fire your Travel Agent.

I've not travelled in Y recently, but you used to only be able to pick a seat if you were in J or F. It may have changed with the new version of the website.
