Flying with EK :-

MAN-DUBAI EK020 J Class
DUBAI-BKK EK386 Y Class
BKK - DUBAI EK385 Y Class
DUBAI-MAN EK17 J Class

What chances of an upgrade from Y to J on the Dubai-BKK-Dubai sectors ?

I would not make any plans of getting bumped up especially if you have a Blue card. I am a Gold card holder and I travel extensively between JFK and DXB and I have NEVER moved a class up.
If you do get an upgrade, please let me know what I am doing wrong!! Hmmm, maybe I should start flying Qatar and see if that is any better...

If you have enough miles for an upgrade, that will be your best bet

I know someone who works for Emirates at Zurich and she told me it's EK policy to only upgrade people when they absolutely have to (i.e. only when the flight is overbooked, and only at the last minute, after they know if anyone missed the flight, etc.) Emirates seems to be rather good at predicting loads (or bad at getting a full load, on some flights) so this situation does not happen often. Op-Ups are very rare on EK.

Haha, I'd have to totally disagree on that. I would say that more than 80% of the opoups I get are on EK, even though flying EK makes up fewer than 50% of my flying.

The way the opups are usually done depends on where you are. I think it is very "by the book" in DXB and other middle eastern cities but more erratic at other stations.

However, I agree that ex ZRH opups are rare. I have friends who live in Zurich and fly ZRH-DXB almost every week of the year but have only received an opup (J-->F) once or twice as Skywards Gold members.

From other stations, however, (LHR especially in my experience) you can get an upgrade for random reasons with or without status as long as you make a case for yourself. I think upgrading from J to F is the most common as J seems to be the cabin that EK sells best.

Cheers

Granted, I should have specified Y -> J up-ops. And it may also depend on who is handling EK flights at the specific destination. At ZRH, it's Jet Aviation, and they follow the handbook they got from Emirates HQ rather seriously.

So in answer to my original question the opinion is i have no chance of an upgrade from Y to J unless of course Y is full !
