Thanks for your help, i have pasted below what MMB says, with regards to the B777-200/200ER thing...

FlightONWARD Dubai, United Arab Emirates to London, United Kingdom
Flight Depart / Arrive Time Airport Duration / Stops Class / Aircraft
EK 11 Depart
Fri09 Jul 10 02:50 Dubai International Airport (DXB) 07 hrs 30min
0 Stops Business
Boeing 777-200/ 200ER
Arrive
Fri09 Jul 10 07:20 London Gatwick Airport (LGW)

So I am presuming it will be the B777-200, which following ft101's link says recently refurbished so hopefully it will nice new seats?

Lara H Jul 5, 2010 12:22 am

Total newbie here so you can douse me down if you wish, but hopefully there is at least one kind soul that may be able to assist.

I keep reading DREADFUL reports of Emirates...(what happened?) and we are flying with them in September. I am hoping that some advice can be given as to what seats to choose for DH and me as we have never flown Emirates before, only the good ol' flying 'roo!

We are flying on 22/9 from Melbourne to Dubai, with aprox 2 hr stop and then onto their new destination, Madrid. The flights are respectively EK 407 777-300ER & EK141 A330-200.

Return is on 8/10 from Venice to Dubai, with aprox 4 hr stop, and back to Melbourne. Flights are EK136 A330-200 & EK408 777-300ER

Also, what will happen at Dubai? Will we be allowed to get off the plane on our outward journey, and is there somewhere at the airport to freshen up, such as showering? I have searched the website but it only mentions First & Business class...we are at the back of the plane in Economy!

Any other tips and hints will be gratefully appreciated...except to cancel the booking!

Welcome to FT Lara.

There seems to be a lot of service inconsistency with Emirates of late. I've had some excellent flights though, so it's what you make of it, and how the crew on your flight are.

As far as seating goes, the 330-200s are easy. They're in a 2-4-2, so grab an aisle and window for your travelling partner and yourself.

The 777-300ERs are a bit more tricky. They have a 3-4-3 unless you go to the last three rows which are 2-4-2. If you don't mind being all the way down back, where meal choices and people queuing up for the loos, as well as getting out of the a/c can be an issue. I think it's still preferred by most couples to a block of 3 seats.

You will have to change planes at Dubai. Basically go out, follow everyone back up to security, roam around duty free, and then to your departure gate.

EK lounges are only accessible to those with status or flying in F/ J as you found out. There are some other lounges (Marhaba lounge, civil aviation lounge) that are accessible on payment, or through various credit cards.

Thanks sooo much for your info and prompt reply ung1, such a relief not to have been shot down for my naivety!(not yet anyway!);)

Just checked Emirates "Manage your booking" and those 2-4-2 seats have already been allocated!:( What now???

Also, I'll check out more info about the lounges you mentioned!^

It's kind of early for them to already be gone. They could be blocked, so check closer to the date. You could go with an aisle and center in the middle, and not having anyone jumping over you guys. Or take a window and aisle/ center, though I can't imagine having to jump over two people every time I wanted to get out, on such a long flight.

ung1 pretty much summed it up. If you are keen on taking a shower you can always go to the g-force gym in terminal 3 (the one your flights are arriving at and departing from) and pay the entrance fee. Then you can use the Sauna and showers. I did that a couple of weeks back because the lounge was totally overcrowded and I felt like going into the sauna and taking a shower ;)

Welcome to FT.

I fly ex MEL a lot. If it was me, I would have taken a different route as 14+ hrs in Y in EK is going to be tough, even with the world's best IFE.

You could have taken EK405, which stops in SIN. It's only a 1hr layover, but it breaks up the flight into 2 x 7hr chunks.

You may (and I say that cautiously) receive an upgrade email prior to departure (3-days) but they are sporadic at best, so don't count on it.

And don't worry about being flamed here on the EK forum. We're all very civilised here. You'll only get flamed over on the UA forum. And those guys on the QF forum (dont start me...) ;)

Unless the OP can/ wants to sleep on the flight for an extended period. Then 14 continuous hours is better. Though I don't know of many people who can sleep longer than a couple of hours in a Y seat.

Lara H Jul 11, 2010 2:38 am

Great!(not) Sounds like it won't be a good way to start our holiday.
Is there anyway we might be able to swap to the EK405?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes...you have all been great so far! Is it advisable to order a "special" meal rather than have one that is for the rest of the cattle?

Look at fare conditions for changes. However, I'd recommend you go with the flight that works best for your onward flight to Europe. A one hour stop just adds take-off, landing, cabin disturbance etc. It's a good opportunity to stretch your legs, but you can do that walking around the aircraft. It's better than being at DXB for 6 hours instead.

The only advantage I know of with special meals is that you get to eat sooner than everyone else. On EK they don't usually run out of meal options, and the regular food is pretty good imo. Special meals reduce opup chances though, so I doubt many on FT would subscribe to the idea of ordering them.

Tall Ozzie newbie

Hi sorry to barge in on this thread but a prompt answer from one of you more experienced would be great.
I'm on an EK flight ex Zürich tomorrow and thought best to check in tonight...
I'm 190cm and have come up with the following seating prorities...

1st - rows 46, 47, 48, a, k, b, j.

2nd - Emergency exits.

3rd - rows 24, 38, g, f, e, d.

Does this sound like a reasonable choice to go in with ?

Also I fly home from Zürich twice every year and Emirates seems to be the best in all things plus price...

Am I right with such an assumption ???

It depends on what your priorities are. I am a 6'7" and for me legroom is top priority. So I would go for the emergency exit seats first as no other seat gives you nearly as much space as those at the emergency exit.

Hi, welcome to FT Australia_home!

As far as I know, the last few rows don't add any leg room. If you're flying alone, then the added advantage of a pair of two seats doesn't help.

My first choice for leg space would be emergency exit (aisle and middle) seats. The window ones have the door in front and the curve of the aircraft is not nice if you are tall. Ask for these at check in.

Second would be the bulkhead seats. The aisle is better because you can stretch your legs into the front beside the bulkhead.

I'd always choose aisle over a center seat though. The G seats are great because if you're right handed, you can eat without having to constrain your arm.

Can't comment on ZRH- Oz prices, but doing it on EK probably gets you Silver, so that's a good deal. Etihad only flies to GVA, QR has a limited network to Oz. SQ is an option, but probably more expensive.

Hope that helps.

I think Row 46 has slightly more leg room than 47 and 48. I flew 47K then 46J recently and there did seem to be more space on Row 46, partly because the seats are not well aligned with the row in front. I quite like 46B or 46J when travelling alone as there is good space beside you, once you have taken off.

Doesn't this make it awkward to view the ICE screen?

Just booked on the A380 From Man To Bkk and requested 42A on all legs, in your opinion, What are your prefered seats on the A380 in Economy?
I have been up stairs a few times, But unable to get a good sleep.

What are the 68/ 81 A/K seats ung1? Whoops, just found it on seat guru.

You may have guest, I didn't get away for a July holiday, No deals to be Add

ft101 Jul 18, 2010 8:28 pm

If you found Seatguru did you also notice there was no Seat 42A? Although I think the numbers do change right at the front on some aircraft.

PS I hope you didn't book for the first week of the A380 ex Man. I hear it's to be delayed by a week.

GigoloArt Jul 20, 2010 9:06 am

I am on a 3-class config flight from DXB to RUH next week (the one that departs at 1.55am)...

Which are the seats in F?

The seats are only slightly out of alignment, but, yes, the view of the screen is not perfect.

A380 seating

hiya does any one know what the seating is like on the A380 business class i flying on my own to k.l via dxb and on the manchester to dxb leg its on the A380 someone told me seat 23k is a good seat to have as theres more leg room ?? does any one know if this is correct? :)

vieri_c Jul 27, 2010 11:05 am

was in 23A last year, and 16 K this year, didnt noticed any difference. row 23 is right up on the bulkhead seperating main and 2nd business cabin. The As and Ks are very private and has greater legroom than the Bs and Js. if you are flying alone there are the best!

Zol Jul 27, 2010 12:44 pm

Was on 23A to YYZ. Loved it, v private and comfortable.

As vieri_c said, A and K are the best as they have window and aisle access and have extra storage areas that the middle seats don't have.

Note thought that row 23 is 4 rows from the Bar area so it can get noisy if you wish to sleep.

maggieomx Jul 27, 2010 2:51 pm

hiya vieri and khalid thanks for the reply yep im flying alone seat 23k just like to read and look out of the window, and watch ICE im flying early afternoon so hopefully i wont want to sleep and it might be me making the noise at the bar!!!!, (joke)
as you sit in the seat do you have the storage on your left ? and the window on the left? as the seat behind has storage on the right is this correct thanks

vieri_c Jul 27, 2010 2:59 pm

there are deep bins nxt to the windows, and additional parcel shelf on the aisle side which is handy for the odd magazine or 2 plus the unchilled drinks sitting. Enjoy the view and the lovely wing flex with the EA engines hanging off them!

777/300 Sleeperette seats v lie flat

I have searched through this forum for the difference between Sleeperette seats and lie flat on the 777/300/LR which show up on my forthcoming flights.
Posts on this subject give the link to the photo on Airliners but it is the same photo for both seat styles.
Can someone give to a link to photos of both of them please or comment on the difference.

The last few times I have flown this route in the past 12 months - it has been an upgraded plane.

I am also flying it again on 26th August so send me a pm to remind me to report back.

Hope this helps?

petterpan Aug 17, 2010 8:58 am

Thanks a lot for the info, much appreciated, I Have high hopes now

if you go to services by flight check this flight for the next 2-3 weeks on some cases it says 777-200 and on other 777-ER

i have been flying this route once a year for the last 12 years and i used always prefer the 380/381 mostly in A330-200 instead of the via BBK 384/385 old configurations and between those two old cabins i liked quitter and the and long pitch airbus, than the 777,old cabin recliner. i am full of hopes now that things will change!

In addition has the EK 385/385 (HKG-BBK-DXB) been re-fited?? i haven't been on that flight for 3 years

The 384/385 is a 777-300 which are all re-fitted according to post 317 in this thread, however it will change to an A380 in a couple of months - see the what's new in 2010 thread.

I am actually on the HKG-BKK flight on Friday 20th August returning to HKG on Tuesday 24th August, so can report back if you remind me.

I do this flight around once per month and it has been a re-fitted plane for as long as I can remember (ie the last 2 years).
