People without status/frequent flier numbers were upgraded on saver tickets. This sector (EK571 CCU DXB) is not premium heavy, and usually cater's to a majority of saver/flex fare buyers.

Any ideas as to what could have happened?

I boarded first if that matters

Were the non status pax/FFs couples ?

In order to OP UP from J to F, does Y and J have to be oversold or just Y?

Not all of them - they did some partial upgrade to a family of 4.

It was very random. I couldn't understand how.

It depends. If Y is so over that that it causes J to go over then they'll roll forward into F

Understood, I'm really looking to try F so I'll be looking to use miles to upgrade don't want to miss out if I get the chance. MXP-JFK. However wanted to understand how the OP upgrade process would or could work. And as you said before in AUG award space doesn't open up for F (however maybe thru check in or other options after check in can make it happen, such as this if miles don't work)

If you want to use miles definitely keep calling especially shortly after T-48

Normally I wouldn't be so eager to do it and maybe chance it on the OP UP, but I have never flown EK, have never flown in a 3 class config with F, and specifically chose MXP as our final city to visit in order to fly EK.

Does the auto-upgrade feature work better than calling? Or does call center get that availability before it hits the auto-upgrade?

At T-48 auto upgrade no longer works, and generally reports have been that availability is open for a while before auto upgrades work

Got it, I have EF set, so I'll rely on that..

Don’t rely on EF. There have been several reports of people phoning in and / or checking MMB and securing a miles upgrade which was not indicated by EF. I’m generally an EF fan but this is not one of their most reliable features.

Good to know thanks!

That has been my experience too. The auto upgrade has never worked, but I ALWAYS ask a the airport check-in, and often get the J-F upgrade

Sorry, just getting used to this. Great forum! I have a flight (J Flex on Gold)from DXB to Houston next week and this is the current load. Chances of an upgrade?

i would say relatively high chance of an op-up. But you will get a more accurate idea abotu 2-3 days before departure, as these loads seem to fluctuate on US flights.
Check what the fare difference is to move to flex plus? This will increase your chances of an op-up even more, as anyone else on a flex plus fare will be ahead of you for op up

Let's hope! Sadly I cannot change the fare to a flex plus at this stage. I guess I just have to hope for not a lot of Flex Plus people in J?
