I wonder if CWL will be next for EK?

It makes for an interesting competition between EK and QR. The plans for fleet renewal in QR (cabin retrofit etc) make it quite a serious competitor in J. QR Y is abysmal on a 787, EK 77W is significantly better. I should have listened to Saltire74.

As I said on another thread though, be prepared to be messed around at EDI. The security and baggage handling are both subpar.

Have used EDI a couple of times for QR flights and to be honest, am not a fan of the airport. Give me GLA any time.

Looks like similar prices from Glasgow as Edinburgh. Not sure why you would pick Edinburgh, espeicially given the similar late evening flight times.

It's closer for many and for the evening flight the traffic will be much lighter - one reason I always try and get the earlier flight from GLA.

I would place my bet that EK re UK will concentrate
to work on upgrading their capacity at STN. QR(going through a difficult period) just added CWL as just another small airport for them.
EK have recently offered fares ex CWL via DUB to connect onto their flight from there.

I'm also excited about this, also living within the distance for chauffeur pick-up for both airports. But I also really hope Glasgow gets the A380.

A good result! Always preferred Edinburgh over Glasgow, just a better airport, now can use EK!
What is interesting is the 777 product at both Stanstard and Edinburgh has a long parking time, I assume the airport's were desperate to have EK and gave a good rate on the return schedules, as I would assume the time the planes are parked on the groud is costing EK. Maybe the idea is if the service takes off, they can add an extra service and keep the initial time slots.

Interestingly on the evening Glasgow flight on Thursday, most of J was empty and from the looks of it F was completely empty. Can emirates really operate three flights from Scotland when the premium cabins are close to empty?

One swallow does not a summer make. I.e. you may need a broader sample of flights!

I agree but I have flown with emirates mainly in J from GLA for the past 10 years nearly monthly at times and during non-peak times, the premium cabins are never near full capacity. Even more so since the second GLA flight began operating. That said, Emirates can be quite expensive in their premium cabins! In January I opted for First (on par with J on Emirates) on BA (mainly to make the desired tier on BAEC) but also it cost marginally more than J on Emirates..

I did prefer the Concorde Room to Emirates F lounge but during the flight the hard product, although more spacious than Emirates J, I found on par with J overall.

I've flown from GLA to Asia once a quarter for the last 3 years and have always been in full J cabins. Admittedly I often leave on a Sunday night and knowing my luck probably peak times.

lots@LHR May 14, 2018 12:45 am

One interesting thing about the GLA PM flight is that it lands at 08:05 in DXB, missing some of the connections to Asia. The EDI flight leaves earlier in the evening meaning a 05:55 DXB arrival, more suitable for a wave of flights. Even though I stay closer to GLA, i'll be using EDI this winter because of this.

When they do start out of EDI, I hope the security queues are shorter than yesterday. It was mayhem and they kept disabling the boarding pass scanners to prevent more people entering the area. I noticed a few people at check in who were right on the minimum time and pretty sure they wouldn't have made their flights, even with Fast Track security as that was chaos too.

I do worry about the infrastructure at Edinburgh Airport. I have only traveled at the airport since their recent up-turn in performance flying in the Summer of 2017 and Winter 2017 but I got the impression that they have overly expanded without enhancing the airport terribly much. They seem to band around the £250m figure which they are investing over 10 years which might be too late. IF they invested £250m in the next 2 years then EDI would provide a much better alternative to Glasgow especially with EDI coming in cheaper than GLA more consistently over the past few years.

If QR offer a chauffeur service and EDI improve the airport, I will provide opt for them over my much loved Emirates as they are £200-500 cheaper and OW is far superior to Skywards as I travel to America frequently too.
