Your Operational Upgrades Experience 2018 - Please Post Here
Hi All
Another new thread for 2018, please post your 2018 Operational Upgrade experiences here. Refer to wiki for format details |
Is this really the first one of the year? Maybe I'm doing this wrong and the process for 'WiKi' is different... No clue..
Anyway, here goes: Upgrade given: Y - J Upgrade location: Gate Route: DXB-LGW Flight number: EK11 Type of ticket: ECONOMY FLEX Date of travel: 14th-jan-2018 Tier status: Silver Tier miles to date: 26250 Skywards miles balance: 47000 Number of pax on the same PNR (Including OP): 1 Number of pax upgraded: 1 No myself, but Mrs t. Quite surprising, a (relatively) lowly silver on a Flex ticket. No idea how many opups there were, not being an avgeek (just married to one), she does not look out for that sort of detail. Looked at the new BP when waiting for the lift (A9) and thought: 'cool, I must take the other lift' We usually fly J on this route so she was very chuffed this morning to tell me the upgrade Gods had smiled upon her and dropped her in 15J. |

So to get two in a row brings 'hen's teeth' to mind. |
That is exactly what we thought. I seriously doubt it will ever happen again, but we certainly enjoyed it while we could.
We had upgraded our MEL DXB leg using virtually all of our points. We also got an email offer for the DXB SIN leg, but we didn't accept it as it was too expensive for a 7 hour flight. So glad we didn't seeing as we got upgraded anyway. |

In the last three EK flights this is the second upgrade
Upgrade given: J to F Upgrade Location: Checkin Route: DUS DXB Flight Number: EK58 Type of Ticket: Business Flex Date of Travel: 1st February Tier Status: Blue Tier Miles to date: 24500 I received the upgrade at check in and my colleague who is also Blue (same fare) received it at the lounge. We asked at check in when I received mine and confirmed he was next on the list for an OpUp which happened about an hour later. |

Upgrade Location: Loung Route: IST DXB Flight Number: EK122 Type of Ticket: Economy Flex Date of Travel: 7 Jan Tier Status: Gold Tier Miles to date: 70000 Flight was heavily overbooked (-20+ in Y). I asked at check in and they said I was 3rd on the list with 3 J class seats left. They said they will let me know in the lounge. I kept checking EF and saw the free seats on the map disappear one by one. When the final one went, I checked MMB and my seat was unassigned. A few minutes later they asked for me on the lounge PA and handed over the new BP. |

Yes, second flight. Very unexpected but welcome all the same.

I have not had much good to say about EK in recent months, so it was a pleasant surprise after a "dry" 2 days of business meetings in Male to get upgraded
Upgrade given: Y to J Upgrade location: Gate Route: Male to Dubai Flight number: 11PM flight Type of ticket: Y Flex Date of travel: 16th-Jan 18 Tier status: Gold Tier miles to date: 20k Number of pax on the same PNR - 1 Number of pax upgraded: 1 |
Op-Up Criteria?
If this posting delights the many gold’s out there... you’re welcome! 😉
Recently on a CDG-DXB (A380) in Y (sadly my default location), as passengers boarded it appeared there was an over-allocation in Y by one (passenger list was apparently incorrect). I was on the front exit row and listened to a full conversation between purser and the section supervisor - as there was two seats available in J, the purser said she will be upgrading one passenger to balance things in Y. The supervisor asked who and the purser gave the seat number of the lucky recipient (row behind me), stated his name, followed by “Gold”. I caught sight of the passengers gold status on his ticket as he gleefully gathered his luggage and relocated upstairs. Let me be clear, I’m not disgruntled and certainly won’t lose any sleep over this as I believe if you pay for Y you get Y etc, but I am curious on the current criteria for op-ups as I am Platinum, was on a Flex-Plus ticket, travelling alone, sat in exit row. I’m taking a wild, wild guess that it may have been my exit row seat that prevented what would have been a most welcome promotion? I’ve further noticed that in 9 months as Platinum I have not had a single op-up compared to a previous near 30-40% hit-rate as gold. I typically fly on EK 4-8 times a month and several of those have been full (in Y at least). Any explainable insight on current policy? Was this just one of those days when the upgrade fairies were having a bad day or am I somehow “blacklisted”? 🤷🏻.♂️ |
Upgrade given: Y - J

Theoretically yes, of course. But I have read so many stories from people where the upgrades stopped after reaching gold that I am wondering. No real cause and effect of course! Just my cynical mind.... Or my warped sense of humour. 😜🙄 |
I was on EK570 today (6th March), Y was 295/304 and there were still quite a few op-ups? How did that happen? J went 41/42 until last minute a service inspector came onboard and F was 4/8

Upgrade Given: Y to J
Upgrade Location: Gate Route: BKK-DXB Flight: 385 (the 01:05 flight) Type of Ticket: Economy Flex Travel Date: Yesterday, March 10th Not a member of Skywards, and this was my very first flight with Emirates! Made the second leg of my journey in Y a bit of a let down :). |
Then you need to register quickly for Skywards :)

Upgrade location: Lounge Route: DXB-BUD Flight number: EK111 Type of ticket: ECONOMY FLEX Date of travel: 2nd March 2018 Tier status: Gold Tier miles to date: c.70k Skywards miles balance: c.25k Number of pax on the same PNR (Including OP): 1 Number of pax upgraded: 1 The flight was -14 in Y the day before so I reckoned I had a decent chance of a op-up being on flex. I was at the lounge and around T-90 minutes I got a text (and email) saying I was upgraded. Collected my boarding pass in the lounge, changed my seat and was off to the races. |
NRT-DXB
28 Feb, 18
EK319 NRT-DXB as first segment of NRT-MAN Economy Flex Plus to Business Skywards Gold, approx 80K miles. Upgraded while in lounge, when I went to reception to ask about on time status. Otherwise would have been upgraded at gate, I think. Had been offered upgrade (cabin only, no extra baggage or miles) by email 3 days before for £360 but did not take it up. |
Upgrade Given: J to F
Upgrade Location: Gate Route: DXB-MAN Flight: 017 Type of Ticket: Business Flex Tier status: Gold Travel Date: March 18th Spoke to Purser who said the flight was absolutely rammed, with a lot of upgrades, although F was far from full. Strangely enough, my only other (two) Opups on Emirates have been on EK017 when flying on a Sunday. |
