You could have just gone to the airport at check in with her and used miles from your account to upgrade her though? Or am I missing something?...
Not sure if it was because of her ticket fare - Saver.. |

At DXB they have the facility to do it without you needing to travel.
At outstations you must be travelling so the controller can deduct miles properly through the airport control system. I assumed he was travelling ex-DXB, or perhaps DXB is no longer willing to allow it! |

Is this a situation where hubby getting an EK linked credit card would be useful (not sure what the current sign-up bonuses are) - even a combination of bying and transferring miles soon gets expensive.
Thanks - I'll take a look at that! :) |

The other option if its the case of a small shortfall is to see if you can earn the miles through partners.
For example I am HH gold and the missus is also HH gold with Hilton. However we will never achieve diamond as we don't stay that many nights at the hotel chain . Once both of us have reached the required number of nights for renewing gold, all future bookings are in the name of the person with a shortage of miles This adds on quite a bit of miles especially if you have a long stay planned . Another option is to see if there is friend/family who is planning to fly on EK soon and send them a skywards member referral link. Its a easy way for you to get a few thousand miles depending on their class. of travel Thanks for the suggestions ukdoctor - will certainly look closer into these options :) |
Hey guys,
I followed the thread a little bit but couldn't find any answer to my question yet. Maybe one of you is able to tell me whether my following plan is possible: I'm about to book a return flight FRA-DXB-PVG in Y Flex Plus with my +1. I would like to upgrade the FRA-DXB and the PVG-DXB leg for both of us, as these two are the overnight flights. In my mind I have the following idea: 1.) The cost for an upgrade from Y to J on the FRA-DXB leg are 30k miles each. No problem with that, as I currently have 69.000 miles and she has 32.000 miles. I would call Emirates to take 30.000 miles from each account to perform the upgrade (I am her travel coordinator so this should be possible). 2.) The cost for an upgrade on the PVG-DXB leg are 39k miles each. After step 1, I would have left 39.000 miles on my account to upgrade one person but she would only have 2k left, so not enough. However, my father also has a skywards account with 40.000 miles which are about to expire. He doesn't need the miles and I could use them (I am also his travel coordinator so I am allowed to use his miles) So my idea was to call Emirates and to use 39.000 miles from my account and 39.000 miles from his account to upgrade me and my +1 on this leg. Is this possible? I'm not sure if my plan is realistic, as there would be 3 different skywards accounts involved to perform the upgrades for our flights? So anyone thinks that this would be possible? The last option would be to book the trip on two separate tickets (one for her and one for me). I could then perform all upgrades myself online (myself with my own miles, and my +1 with her miles and the miles of my father by logging into her booking with his account). However, I would be happy to avoid this option, since I don't want to risk that only one of us gets on op up one of the Y legs (as we would be one of the first people to get one since we fly Flex Plus and are both Skywards Gold). So I would prefer the option I explained in steps 1 and 2. Anyone can help me out here and tell me if this plan is possible? I know it's a little crazy. ;) Thank you very much! |

The process you have suggested in option 1 and 2 seems totally fine and will work without problems as long as there is upgrade availability. I would advise to call the EK call centre and confirm there are seats available for upgrade for your chosen dates prior to booking. If there is availability, to ensure those seats don't get taken by anyone else I usually ask them to hold the seats for me and whilst I am on the phone with them I book online and once the ticket is issued ask for the upgrade to be processed. |
What about using miles from two accounts to upgrade a single passenger? Can my friend upgrade me on a ticket using miles from her account and mine? In this case neither account has sufficient miles to upgrade on their own and she's not on the pnr nor related to me. I'm guessing this is a no, otherwise who would ever transfer miles?

I will give it a try tomorrow and book the flights for me and my +1. Upgrade availability seems fine to me. Just made a dummy award booking and Saver as well as FlexPlus awards are available for all legs of the flights. To my knowledge Upgrades are the same fare bucket as Saver Awards (booking class D) so it should be fine. I checked on Expertflyer as well, showing availability for Business upgrades as well. ;) I will let you all know if it worked. If you come up with - let's call it "unusual" - plans like that it really depends on the callcenter agents knowledge. Had similar experiences with other airlines in the past and it required several calls to get the right person on the phone who is able and willing to do such things. ;) |

No, miles need to come from the same account.
For example on my ticket LGW-DXB-DEL , I can use my account to upgrade LGWDXB and use another persons account to upgrade DXB DEL. However since the miles are taken from separate accounts you end up using more miles than upgrading LGWDXBDEL in one go. This might be cheaper in some cases than buying/transferring miles. |
