Speculation on new fees
In a gulf news article Tim Clark talks about introducing new fees.
What do you think those will be? Credit card fee? Check in fee? Alcohol on board ? Movies on demand ? So many possibilities ! ;) Seriously this airline is losing ground... "Emirates, the world’s largest airline by international passengers, introduced a new seating charge on October 3 where passengers now have to pay [around Dh50 per seat] if they want to pre-select their seats. The airline is looking at introducing other new charges, Clark said without providing specific details." http://m.gulfnews.com/business/aviation/africa-s-economic-woes-weigh-on-emirates-network-tim-clark-1.1914526 |
Additional baggage allowance. 1x 23kg free, additional baggage purchased during ticket purchase or check-in online.
CC fee already exists in some markets. I don't see them charging for onboard services like alcohol or IFE, however. Feels a little shortsighted to me, like a short-term tactic to counter lower loads, rather than a viable long-term strategy. |
EK is massively undercutting prices from India to UK. Found some saver Y tickets return (India to UK) for around 35000 INR (around $525) for November.
I have not seen these prices on EK for nearly a decade. |
Just as long as they don't go all BA on us. But agreed, Emirates can be very good value for money on the saver fares, given the level of service on offer.

Get ready for filthy cabins :) |
Unfortunately the prices in Y between Australia and the UK have jumped up greatly. I'm looking at somewhere around A$2700 return in may, that is US$2k. Or £5,000,000.

I mean on some sectors e.g. Muscat or Doha there is no point in a meal but that could be simply scrapped as cost cutting. Maybe they could get rid of the flower from the F class suite like BA did from the lav :D |
Depressing!

I think DCC (distribution cost charge) could come.. TC always hating against GDS'
|
CC fee already there for me (ex UK).
20kg luggage limit already there (Special tickets ex UK) We even have a weekend supplement from the UK. However, ticket prices are good with plenty competition, and I'm not even seeing ex-EU fares that are worth it just now. |
If they start charging for alcohol I will be changing airlines

This fee is for picking a seat of ur choice or the airline will assign any random seat...

Pax never know what's better: 1. buy just J fare or: 2. buy Y fare and bid. (this is no the same as hoping for op-up!) so if you not sure what's better, the safest option is to book another airline. |

Anyway, they should hire some US3 revenue management folks, they will nickel and dime pax and bring in $Billions. Pax wouldn't even notice. May be EK is ripe for WW. |

That is so unfair to EasyJet/Ryanair, which BA seems to be following.

I'm a fan of both of the above (and Jet2 and Thomas Cook are also pretty decent). You generally know what you're getting and the buy on board is of a better standard than you get on BA. For short haul, I'd choose point to point LCC over BA any day of the week, provided there is a route. For long haul, I mostly prefer going via the Middle East at the moment.

This echoes my thoughts exactly. I've recently done TA on Thomas Cook (NY) and they were better than the last time I flew on Virgin to Miami.
My current commute is on EasyJet (MAN-AMS each week). In the 40+ flights this year, there has only been one major delay (3 hours due to bad weather at AMS). They are generally on time, and light years ahead of BA these days. The only issue I've had is 2 flights requiring the Dutch plod to meet the plane due to misbehaviour (one was the before mentioned 3 hour delay). |

We've been looking at some of the Thomas Cook flights out of MAN. They fly to quite a few US cities these days (we're looking at MIA). Their Y+ looks quite decent, and is reasonably priced.

Easyjet are quite good. Especially if you do the flexi fare trick .
Moreover flexi fares allows a second piece of hand luggage and a £5 voucher for food /drink on board. The one weird thing that I have noticed if I'm sitting on 1A is the axe on the wall near the door on most easyjet aircraft. Do all aircraft have these. Never seen them on other airlines. |

I paid for EasyJet Plus. So, FastTrack security at MAN, extra piece of handbaggae and free seat selection. Well worth it. I'm also now a member of Flight Club. So, I get unlimited free flight changes - which is very useful. |
just booked LHR-DXB_BKK_DXB_LHR and found for our seats now i have to pay 25 Euro * 4 sectors = 100 Euro per person !!! :td:
all our last 4 trips on Ek had been saver, but never had to pay for seats. |

all our last 4 trips on Ek had been saver, but never had to pay for seats. Can you confirm the 100 Euro cost? From LHR I would have expected it to be quoted in GBP, and there should be a discount from the individual sector cost when buying the complete outbound or inbound together. I haven't noticed yet what the discount would be so trying to get an idea. |

I booked via a NL website, so the original booking is in Euro, and them claim in this link you posted the price for seat reservation is always qouted in the same curencey as the original booking. That's a litle bit overpriced for a "normal" Y seat. If it would be 10 Euro per sector , ok. may be 25 Euro for "special" exit front seats ..., but this ??? :td: Would like to know who spend 100 Euro for only to reserve the seats on a Europe -Asia rt. ? |

Would like to know who spend 100 Euro for only to reserve the seats on a Europe -Asia rt. ? Now, sometimes it's better to jut buy flex ticket (no fee in such situation). On the positive: better chances to get good seat if decided to book it or buy Flex ticket.. |

Would like to know who spend 100 Euro for only to reserve the seats on a Europe -Asia rt. ? With most airlines I find I now have to look much further than the initial fare quote to decide which is cheapest - seat selection, baggage charges etc. Of course sometimes this calculation works in EKs favour - if travelling in J I do not have to pay airport travel or parking costs which is a saving of over £100 compared with the total cost of travelling BA (and at the moment I don't have to pay for seat selection with BA either). However on balance I would prefer a single charge that covered flight, food, drink, seat and baggage when flying long haul (although happy to have the car when EK fares remain competitive ;)) |

in J there's no charge for seat selection regardless of fare type. |
