Correct, an upgrade requires Saver availability. Flex is for an outright award (start with no ticket, use miles to purchase one, Vs start with an economy ticket and use miles to upgrade to J)

dilemma (i think)

I am flying EK779 (CPT-DXB) next Tuesday in J with my partner who is also in J but she is on a different booking. I had the email alerts set for F availability and they have come through today on both bookings, we have enough miles to upgrade both of us however, I am worried that after i upgrade the one booking, that takes away the availability and i wont be able to upgrade the other?

can anybody advise in this situation please? My partner has never flown F before and would love us both to experience it (but she isnt flying there with me in J :D:D:D )

Seriously, I'd phone and get EK to do it while you are on the phone. They should be able to see if there is >1 upgrade seat available.

Does Emirates/Skywards add F-award availiability closer to the fly date? If so, at what point? 30 days out, 14 days out etc?

It's pretty random and depends on the route. Set up an alert or check daily, or even more often with 3 or 4 days to go.
