Flight overbooked

Dear FTs

I'm in Dubai on my way back to Madrid. I have a long connection, so I arrived with enough time allowing me to ask for row 41 (Y, first row) on the A380. The thing is I have been told I cannot take this seat because they are downgrading at least six people from business and they will be placed there. Economy is also overbooked. So the question is: do they compensate those people they are moving with something more than a stretched seat with more legroom?

Thanks!

EK are pretty good when downgrading. The usually offer a return J flight for free on the original route - or at least they used to.

Similar experience at DEL in October last year . I was in paid J and the cabin was overbooked. They were looking for volunteers to downgrade and offered me a return J ex DEL to DXB.

Overbooked J on an India flight? Wow, must've been a big high-level delegation or something

What Happens to Involuntary Downgrades ?

Oh Wise EK FT Sages,

I have booked my wife a Emirates Business Class ticket ORD-DMM-ORD using 150,000 Skywards Points and $1,600. The DMM-ORD leg is on December 22, a typically high demand date for North American travelers. If Emirates is overbooked in First and Business, and they involuntarily downgrade my wife, do I understand their only obligation is to give her another round-trip ticket ? Than doesn't sound right or in accordance with U.S. Regulations.

Your replies and insight are appreciated.
