Or you can set up an Expertflyer alert for your already booked seat number. When they clear the seat to assign you a new one, it remains open for a brief moment until reassigned and Expertflyer will email you an alert notification. Works for me every time!

Thats very clever. Never thought of it.

Morning of travel, my Economy pre-booked seat number disappeared from MMB. So I figured demand must be huge for Economy and hopeless for Business - why else would they OpUp 12 hours before flight time.

I checked MMB again at T-3, and my original seat had reappeared, EF showed all Business 0 and Economy 1.

In the lounge or On board, no business seats were available for upgrade.

Now I get that one of two things happened.

1. Lots of last minute Business customers turned up, or
2. Several Economy cancellations and I didn't make the cut for an OpUp. But that is unlikely since Business went full and I did see few others trying to upgrade with miles in the lounge and told it was full.

Going back to the original point of one’s seat disappearing and getting reassigned or initially assigned seat being empty when you get on the plane……
There’s another simple reason for the above….. change of equipment. When the aircraft is changed for capacity or an operational reason (e.g. from a 777-200 to 777-300ER or one type of A380 to another) (i) more seats will become available in Y and C and (ii) if the seat no you initially held is not available in the new aircraft, you may not get a seat assigned until you enter the lounge or get to the gate.

Good point. Wasn't the case in this instance though.

This may not be very reliable. EF have confirmed on this thread (Post#5) that they only check availability a couple of times a day and not every few minutes, it is quite likely that EF might not be checking during the time your seat becomes vacant. Though their comment was for Rewards availability and not seat availability, I would still doubt that for seat availability EF is 'event driven' and not 'polling' based. Nevertheless, I shall verify this on my next trip.

Then, the operations staff must have decided that they couldn't hold your flight for passengers from a connecting flight and off-loaded them!

This happens when:

The delayed flight was running a lot later than anticipated.

A connecting flight is put on 'hold' as it approached DXB and therefore passengers connecting won't make the connection in time.

A connecting flight was re-assigned a new gate at a different terminal to the original (e.g. from A to B) or off-gate parking (this could add a good 30 to 45 min delay)!

In the 'good old days', EK would have held the departing flight for passengers connecting from a delayed one but no more! If a departing flight is delayed, it will miss it's allocated take-off slot. Getting a new one will depend on not only the availability of a new one but also the landing slot at the destination based on the new arrival time. You can imagine the domino effect this will have!

You were very unlucky!

While I am sure this may sometimes be the case, it is definitely not always the case. I have been on a few flights that have been delayed for connecting passengers, the last one was a couple of months ago DXB-BHX, where the flight crew (during their normal welcome message) apologised for the late departure (about 20mins) of the plane, and confirmed it was due to waiting for some connecting passengers.

Am sure it doesn't always happen, but it definitely does happen sometimes.

Very surprised on my recent trip to DUB (BKK-DXB-DUB-DXB-BKK). Was op-upped to J BKK-DXB and DXB-BKK and used miles to upgrade DUB-DXB.

So all in all very nice and I didn't bother checking in advance one little bit. Life's too short for that. But I was told on entry to the lounge in Terminal C, a couple of hours before the flight to BKK (a 380), that I had been op-upped

Que Sera, Sera.

Quite amazing for someone who posted less than 5 weeks ago:
