Actually, your renewal date may not change if you qualify in the 13 month (EK is smart enough not to give you a free extra month!)
The same happened to me this year: - My review date was Aug 31 2016 - I was going to be short 5k points as of Aug 31 but new that I would get those missing points and then some the next month, so I let it go on the basis of the 13 month qualifying period - At the end of August I received an email saying that I hadn't re-qualified but that they *extended* my review period by one month till Sep 30 2016 (how nice of them!) - I got the remaining miles on Sep 5 and qualified - My next review date is Aug 2017 |

I'm in the same boat.
My year ends 31 Dec, I have 145k - I get 18k in Jan so will renew - you will simply change your renewal date to Feb. |

Thanks very much, m3red. Just to confirm I won't actually have 150K miles in a 12 month period but a 13 month period (since I also had some miles in Feb 2016). Is this good enough to re-qualify?
The system is hard to work out when platinum as it's not clear on the EK website. |

It's 12 months to renew and 13 to attain so you'll not renew (but you will retain as you get 14 months) then you will renew at the end of month 13 if that makes sense!

The 13th month for requalifying is just EK's way of ensuring the next membership period is kept short and does not end up being at least a month longer each time due to the mismatch of the 13 month initial qualification period and the 12 month requalification cycle ;-)
Assuming I didn't get it wrong, the "generosity" works to their benefit, not the member's. The card is valid for 2 months beyond the 12 month requalification period, and their initial qualification period is assessed on a 13 month rolling basis. So assume you did not requalify within 12 months, but only had enough miles after 13 months: you would technically qualify as a "new" (so not requalify) Platinum, but this time round the next expiry date would be one month later. You would also not have lost out on any benefits in the interim, given that status is valid 2 months beyond expiry of the regular requalification period (given which, depending on your flight pattern and the rolling 13 month qualification period, you may even manage to qualify during the second month after expiry of the regular qualification period without loosing any of the benefits in the interim). |
