Decoding...

I am completely useless with technology...I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me see what this means:

201 0 DXB
07/31/12 8:30 AM JFK
07/31/12 2:15 PM 388
Daily
52% / 24m P4 A4 J7 C7 I7 O7 Y9 E9 R9 W9 M9 B9 U9 K9 H0 Q9 L9 T9 V9 X9

In return, I'll help someone get into the Emirates lounge in NYC...in 6 months :)

I really appreciate all the help, anyway.

This means the flight looks fairly empty at the moment. P and A are First Class fare buckets, J, C, I, O are Business, and everything else is Economy (Y is the highest fare, then working left to right the fares are cheaper). The number indicates that there are at least that number of seats available in that fare bucket.

So, overall there are at least 8 empty seats in F, 28 in J, and at least 100 empty in Y.

Those figures are not accurate but yeah the flight is pretty wide open with 24m average delay.

Inaccurate in what way? If it reads F4 A4, for instance, does that not mean that there are 8 First seats available?

Nope, it just means that there are 4 seats available to book at either fare level. They're the same cabin, so right now, you could book into the first cabin in F, or in A, with different restrictions, etc.

Okay. I guess then it is hard to know the exact load since EF never shows a P, F, or A value higher than 4.

And the numbers mean how many seats EK is willing to sell not how many theres actually free/taken.

It means there are at least 4 not 4. And for sure it never means 4+4.

Depending on the airlines and COS you can often see numbers not higher than 4 , 7 and 9 for all or some classes. COPA is always a max of 4. AA is 7. TA is 9. Other airlines would love to see real numbers like F 12 J 32 Y 185 but they won't.

When things fill up you'll see the lower cost seats in the same classes diminish in availability, e.g. F will stay at 4 while A (lower cost F seats) will go to 2 or 0, J will stay at 7 while D will go down to 4 or 0 , and Y will stay at 7 (or 9 or whatever) while the O's and R's and T's and Q's go rapidly to 0.
