Upgrade yourself and meet them after you get off would be my call - you can lead a horse to water, etc.. I would not hesitate, but then that's me.

Yes - award availability does open up (sometimes exactly a month before the flight). Set an ExpertFlyer alert, and you'll get an email if/when availability appears.

Cheers,

Thanks Rick,

I'll set the alert and cross my fingers that availability opens up closer to the date

Paid upgrade email

I'm flying alone, cattle class, from sydney to venice via dubai in a month. I joined skywards after I booked my ticket but have updated my sywards details on the emirates web site. Do you think I've got any chance of recieving a paid upgrade email? ...hope, hope, hope!

...I forgot to mention that I didn't book directly with Emirates. They do have my email address now, however.

Pay for both but don't say anything so the companion thinks its an opup! ;)

Hi Jammy, in order to receive an email offer it is not really about the status - certain conditions must occur so that offers are sent, e.g. business class wide open and economy close to be overbooked. As such, it is not possible to generally assume..

shakka Aug 30, 2011 6:00 am

All good suggestions thanks and made me chuckle!

jammy70 Aug 30, 2011 6:29 am

People have mentioned that the booking needed to be made through the emirates web site. Not sure why...

As an aside I find the staff in Rome are always helpfull.

EK Staff?

Curious as I have only ever seen AZ employees working the desk that far before flight. When connecting from LX to EK flights they call me up for reissuance/reprinting of tickets.

I used to get paid upgrade emails for upgrades from Y to J when I was a lowly blue and then silver. Once I became gold I have never been sent a paid upgrade email:confused:.but I have been flying in J for the last 3 years of being gold. Got 2 free op ups J--- F in 2009 but none since then

AFAIK it depends on the sector/date/load etc. Your skywards status plays only a very small role.

I'm hoping for a upgrade email at Christmas... Otherwise it's Y class on the A330 from MAN

Thanks for the replies :)
I am still wondering if it makes any difference if the ticket is booked directly through emirates or not ...anyone know?
Also, how far out from the flight would an email offer be sent?

For my first J trip I booked through Opodo and I got a J class saver fare. Since then I have always booked directly and got a J class Flex fares. As you are paying more for a flex I would expect it would make a difference.

If it assists you, I have never had an op up and I am traveling one one of the busiest routes LHR-DXB-SIN twice a month

It helps for sure if you have booked via EK because that the primary way they harvest your contact details to send you the email offer. It also helps that you have a Skywards number in the booking.

A colleague of mine flew her first EK flight about a week after signing up for Skywards. She got the email upgrade offer about 3 days before the flight.

Strange booking situation - upgrade possibility ?

Hi there,

currently I am looking at SIN-MEL in about 3 weeks time - being booked in Economy (Saver). I would like to upgrade but currently can't.

Checking with EF and KVS I get a 'strange' booking situation:
1. KVS: Flight is zeroed out in all economy
2. EF: showing a half empty flight in the economy section
=> basically contradicting 1

3. EF: only flex awards/ upgrades available

So what's your take/advise on that ? Should an (saver) upgrade become available ? Why would EK zero out the booking class when the seating plan is not really showing this ?

I would REALLY like to upgrade and was even thinking about paying the difference between saver economy and flex economy fare, but with this booking situation I can't even do that.

Cheers

ung1 Sep 4, 2011 9:58 pm

I'm a little confused - do you want to upgrade from saver economy to flex economy, or to business class? For upgrading to business, the fare bucket is the same (D), irrespective of whether you upgrade from saver or flex economy, just the miles required are different.

This happens a lot because EK toys around with their inventory management a lot. Does EF show Y0E0R0W0 etc? A half empty seat map could also mean people haven't pre selected seats.

Are you trying to compare Availability with Seat Maps?

Sorry if I was unclear.

Regular flex awards in business are available, upgrades not.
And yes I want to upgrade fom a booked economy (saver type) to business class.

Ok - then just wait for a couple of weeks as they'll be blocking upgrade inventory till closer to the flight. Shouldn't be a problem getting one on this route.

OK, so that's not a busy route ?
At what time do they usually release upgrade/award seats ? My flight is in about 3 weeks and have been checking since July.

The 404 usually has very low premium loads, except maybe around school holidays when the J cabin must fill up a bit. I'd say maybe about a week out, though a good way to check is to see how far upgrades are available right now (ie for the next few days or all the way to a couple of weeks).

If upgrades were released and they have been taken up, they will probably only release additional capacity very close to the departure date. I upgraded a SIN - DXB (but the 433 from BNE) in June and while there was an upgrade available about a week out (which I didn't take) I only managed to get it done at T-18, after having OLCI (and had to be off loaded from the flight while the upgrade was held for me, and subsequently put back on the flight).

Sorry to be a bit of a dork!
I've signed up for flight stats and worked out how to check for availability, and I can see fare classes available.
What I'm not sure about is how I check for upgrade availability?
Do I search for business class seats and then check fare class availability?
Will it indicate a fare class which is an upgrade, and if so, what is it?

Some advice with an example would be appreciated please?

I'm looking to book BHX > BKK, return departing BHX 7th Oct, returning 22nd Oct

ft101 Sep 5, 2011 12:58 pm

You need availability in Booking Class D for an upgrade from Y to J. I don't think flightstats shows this. Expert Flyer will show it and you can also find it by doing the following (copied from a post made last week)

Log in to your Skywards Account and try to do a Reward Booking. If you see availability for a Business Class Saver Reward then an upgrade from Y to J is also available, as they come from the same class of booking.

Here's an interesting one for all you experts.

My wife and I will be flying together Europe-DXB shortly (on different PNR's).

It looks as if I may well be given an op-up, but my wife is a nobody EK-wise so no doubt won't be offered anything.

If this happens she will divorce me (or at least attempt murder), so would it work for me to ask for her to be upgraded in my place and for me to remain in Y?

You can get upgraded and let her use the seat. Most crews have no problem with this.

ung1 Sep 8, 2011 3:35 am

You can also call and have the PNRs linked. Then, based on your status, she might also be upgraded.

You could ask for the PNR's to be linked (or at least a notation made in the bookings) so if there is a chance you will get op-upped, the load controller might see this and give both of you bigger seats. At least worth a shot...

Of course, this could also mean that the probability that you get upgraded is smaller since the load controller might prefer one pax than two pax (you two then) to be upgraded.

But as you guys know me, I'd give it a shot.

fly hi Sep 8, 2011 1:29 pm

i was travelling in a party of three. i was silver and the other two were nothing ek wise. Our PNR's were linked so guess what we all were upgraded.....

it is definitely worth a short!

Well according to this thread, she wouldn't have lounge access by virtue of an opup anyway.

Same here. 70+ flights with EK, upgraded only once as Silver and 5 or 6 times as Gold. Always C->F, never Y->C and always at the gate. But I don't think I ever had a flight booked in Y after I was EK Gold.

The only consensus on this thread is that no one ever got chauffer drive out of an op-up.

From reference thread below :

And yes, no chauffeur drive for op-ups."

"Years ago, when I was not gold, I get an upgrade, but lounge acces only with big discussions, but it works :-)"

"no lounge access for op-ups at check in! i am positive! have had this situation quite a few times....

unless you get lucky or you're wearing an expensive suit ... now that's a completely different story

no harm in trying"

"If you upgrade at check in you will get a J boarding pass which will have lounge invite due to class and not status in this case."

The conclusion from this I guess is that it is not a right and you shouldn't be upset if you don't get it but there is no harm in trying and you could catch someone on a good day and you're in.

Best use of miles / targets

This a mine of information for someone new to the scheme trying to get to grips.
There is one area where I would appreciate a steer.

Which are the optimum mileage amounts to collect which provide the most useful value for money redemption(s)? Is there an argument best use is miles for upgrades, say Y to J, or use of miles for a full award ( for one of the front cabin(s) )?

Does the scheme permit use awards for one ways, whether for a full ticket or for a one way upgrade ( for half mileage )?

A typical routing I would anticipatee with Emiates = London to Dubai, or London to SE Asia ( SIN )

Is 50k a useful amount, or 100k? or something else?

I would say upgrades, based on collecting miles on flex tickets. Redemptions are very poor value on the EK program, especially the flex or one way rewards.

Then, Europe (LON) is a good deal at 25k vs Singapore at 32.5k given flight time is similar. You can do the entire thing for 52.5k though. Dubai to Australia is probably good value at 45k.

kitbag1984 Sep 10, 2011 12:00 pm

Does anyone know what the cheapest upgrade is on Emirates from the UK?

Thanks - so, just to be clear, Europe (LON) to Dubai is a good deal at 25k is for one way?
Given I read that rewards tend to open up T-48 hours, is that normal rule to upgrade one leg ( one way ) then the other leg ( the return ) 2 days before coming back?

If you can build up the miles and want to upgrade both legs, yes. There is sometimes availability in advance as well, so it's worth checking. And yes, that is the one way mileage required.

Having said that, I wouldn't bother upgrading a 7 hour day flight (more so if you can do it on an A380). I'd rather keep the miles for upgrades on the long hauls to the US/ Australia, simply because the earning levels on EK aren't enough to upgrade very frequently.
