they aren't buying new planes anytime soon. TIme to clean house and have a new, clean, and much better airline moving forward. But who knows.

its also not a great time to dispose of aircraft; so if they have a gov't backstop they can 'wait it out'. It would however, be a reasonable time to convert some 77E to freighters.

Yes, I do. They needed more passengers. They wants more capacity. More than 400 passengers. I knows JFK-TLV flight was always full everyday. Lots of Jewish population who going to Israel. They actually flew on the 747-400 for a very long time. So now, they downgrade from 747 to 787-9 or 77E aircraft. They reduced the capacity.

They reduced capacity OUT OF JFK, but didn’t necessarily reduce overall capacity. Instead they began, or planned to begin to fly from a bunch of cities they hadn’t served before.,Miami, Las Vegas, Seattle ( if my memory is correct) and others which I’m blanking on. Don’t forget, many of the JFK passengers were connecting in and would have been thrilled to be able to avoid JFK.

Seattle? I don't think so (SFO was planned) but realistically, LY is not going to be a great competitor in the US beyond their core market. I have no idea how BOS does, maybe OK w/biotech.

If you have to go beyond NYC, or LAX, (or are starting from there) its much easier to go on-line with UA, or DL than piece together an itin on multiple airlines. There are only so many places where you can fill 200+ seats a day in a 787, to get the other 50-75 you'd need to be profitable , you need to grab connections. UA can do this, LY is more challenged.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see LY be successful but it seems that its going to be exceptionally tough outside of NY especially in the US.

LY did very well in LAX.

What proof, other than speculation, do you have of this?

I'm sure some sort of profit was generated otherwise they'd have closed the route, but the question is what that profit is.
Is it $10 million or $1 million or any other integer....

Without access to LY's we are all just arm chair CEO's making assumptions based on patriotic feelings towards Israel / LY.

Remember when they used to fly to Montréal?
When they dropped the route everyone was "shocked" since they did "very well"

Moderator Note

Folks,
Please remember to stick to the topic. This thread is meant to discuss the impact of the current state of the airline. Want to talk about what planes they should buy? What routes worked and didn’t work? We have discussed these topics before and can continue in those threads or create new ones for speculating on a future EL AL. But if someone is wondering about the current situation, and comes to this thread, I’m not sure how the viability of Concorde flights to Skokie is going to help them
gain a perspective.

Thanks and stay safe!

To sum up: Israel is not allowing general passengers across the border unless they are citizens or close family under certain circumstances;; EL Al owes a great deal of money to refund bookings; we may know more towards the end of August.
ELAL is not shutting down, but like many airlines is in difficulty.
Oh.... and not everyone lives in the USA!

According to a report by Belaaz, and some docs I saw signed by Ariyeh Deri, apparently they will be allowing students into the country under strict regulations, etc....

The report claimed that the committee was in talks with ELAL to organise flights to Israel for these students, and serve as a possible catalyst to re-starting operations.

I am very sceptical about this, has anyone else heard about this?

I highly doubt its a restart, if Israelis arent allowed to enter other Countries and non_Israelis (Tourists, Biz people) arent allowed into Israel, then besides these students and some Dual Nationals no one will be buying any tkts

Whats the big deal? If the parents are willing to gamble on the lives of their kids, why not their money as well? No student not already in Israel should go there imo,

Most likely the TAs are religious Jews to boot. That aside Im still waiting for a refund from a tkt on a different carrier that also hasnt returned to the skys as of yet

From the linked post it seems hes putting it all on the schools, yet what proof is there that ElAl is the party that is saying ca$h only, maybe its the TAs so that they dont lose their commission or have to deal with charge backs or refunds. The author of that linked post also wrote how many parents emailed him saying w/o his informing them how to get a cheap flight or a free flight they wouldnt have been able to send their kid for the year, give me a brake if a parent can afford the $30k to send their kid and gives them a CC to use for whatever and how much ever and side trips to Europe sometimes for a weekend on Dads CC, Its nuts saying they wouldnt have been able to afford to send the kid w/o the savings on the tkt
