So, I like hot glazed Krispy Kreme if they're available, otherwise, I prefer Dunkin.

You mean, Dunkin, as in, their donuts??? I prefer even the supermarkets over Dunkins. Dunkins is for coffee, not donuts.

If you ever get out to Worcester way, hunt down Donut Cafe. Hole in the wall coffee shop on Chandler, off the main drag, but while they last they have the best donuts in town.

I can't stand Dunkin's coffee. Their coffee is both too strong and too watery at the same time IMHO. Also, I prefer things like cafe lattes, and they only make flavored lattes.

I still prefer Dunkin's Boston Creme to whatever crap I had at Tim Horton's. Blech.

+1 ^ I almost forgot about Doughnut Plant. I love their creme brulee donuts/donut holes(?) It's a bit expensive for a donut, but worth the extra bucks for their effort.

OMG, soooooo delicious! Totally worth it, I think. I love their seasonal specials...
We have one in Tokyo with specialized Japanese flavors in addition to the norm...

I wonder if there is one in the UK?
I will be fat then...

Tim Hortons

Okay, after reviewing this thread, I note that it has already been said here and there in some fashion, but for amplification here it goes.....

TIM HORTONS TIMBITS* FTW! :D^

*Timbits: ~3 cm diameter spheres (balls) that are made from the same ingredients as their normal donuts. I particularly enjoy their chocolate-glazed timbit

Note this is for those Tim Hortons located in Canada. I have not yet visited any of their locations State-side so I have nothing to compare to, though some posts near the start of this thread have stated that State-side Timmys tastes different. YMMV.

I love donuts....but my favorite is the one that I get from the coffee cart on the corner by my office. NYC has a ton of these coffee/pastry carts in the mornings and without fail, the donut I get from there is always the one I dream about! I have no idea where they come from, but they're delicious!

I'll give Voodoo the most fun award.
I enjoyed all of the inventive flavors of Frost in Seattle as well.

But... my absolute favorite place for donuts is definitely Round Rock Donuts. I'm drooling on my desk just thinking about them.

Okay, as I've been converting from Starbucks to Dunkin Donuts due to the program devaluation, I find myself buying more donuts along with the coffee.

But I learned a lesson last night. Don't go to Dunkin Donuts at 7:00 PM on Sunday night expecting variety. I had a choice of exactly 4 different donuts. One was glazed. The other 3 were some form of frosted donut. I guess that's what didn't sell. I ended up with a strawberry frosted with sprinkles, not even marginally fresh. I need to cut back on the donuts anyway. This will help.

Chicago has some solid doughnut establishments, like (CA import) Stan's, Doughnut Vault (mentioned above), Firecakes, and Do-rites.

Also, if fillings are your thing, you just can't forget about all the great Polish bakeries in Chicago which sell paczki (pronounced pownch-key).

Doughnut Plant (NYC) is amazing. My faves are their creme brulee doughseed and dulce de leche cake donuts. My work was closing up our desk in SF and relocating to NYC and it was DPlant that convinced me to move.

Dough (NYC) donuts are also amazing. I feel like their yeast donuts are better than the yeast donuts at Dplant.

Underwest Donuts (NYC). It's inside a carwash.

Doughnut Vault (Chi) old fashioneds are really amazing too.

:) I've found if it is after about 5 PM, it's not worth the visit.

Heh, that was me five years ago, I actually tried them last year and they're amazing.

Also, if you like cake doughnuts, this is one of the best places for them. They're here in Durham. http://www.monutsdonuts.com/

We have outposts of SEA-based Top Pot Doughnuts here in DFW now. They're quite good but not great. Glazed Donut Works in Deep Ellum is a better local choice.

For greatness though, I'd go with Blue Star Donuts (PDX). Their blueberry bourbon basil donut is incredible but everything I sampled from there is really good.

Also amazing is Spalding's Bakery (LEX). They make excellent old-school throwback donuts. Just go with a simple glazed donut. Simplicity is best sometimes and Spalding's puts gimmicky trendy donut joints to shame.

Agree with the greatness of Blue Star Donuts (PDX). They do not have the sugar content of most donuts, so you can actually enjoy the added flavors!

I believe Blue Star Donuts has also opened in Venice, CA.

I don't think I can find it again but read a story on-line about the KY donut trail. I'm pretty sure Spaulding's was one of the shops. The premise was a bike ride near the bourbon trail where the writer stopped every 20 or 30 miles for donuts. No chains involved, just old fashioned bakeries and donut shops.

OK, I found it and Spauldings was there in the appendix. Here's a link.

Remember when they had the commercials "I gotta make the donuts!!" where they made donuts throughout the day and night. Now they "dumbed it down" for better consistency between stores where they make them at a central location and truck them as "blanks" to the stores. The stores then finish them based on their needs, adding the fillings (jellies and creams) and toppings (different frostings or sugars). So that the size and density of the donuts are the same every store you go to. In South Florida, most stores get the trucks once a day in the morning, with the higher volume locations getting a second delivery in the late morning.

Stores are now smaller or combined with Baskin's-Robbins Ice Cream to better maximize revenue per location. I have stopped eating doughnuts at night except for my local Krispy Kreme who makes them all day and night as they are the local "factory" for those sold in grocery stores and Walmart locations throughout South Florida.
