I remember their bread was fantastic....

Is it considered one of the top 'high end' burger places...?

I would more consider it a "rear end" place :D I ate at one a couple of months ago for the first time in quite some time and it was "so so." Most places overcook burgers now because of the large e-Coli problem in the US. It wasn't bad, but I'm in no rush to go back. (However, I can certainly see how someone from Argentina could like it because even a single slice of the iceberg lettuce in the vegetable area has more lettuce than probably 2 argentine salads.:D)

jackal Jul 29, 2009 10:15 am

I'd rate them at the higher end of the chain burger places. They're definitely way above your normal fast-food burger, and they're better than most (if not all) of the casual dining chains.

Sure, there may be local joints that beat the socks off of them, but when you're in an unfamiliar area, nothing beats a good Fudd's. The decor in the stores is cool to look at, too.

gof Jul 29, 2009 10:24 am

I remember when the chain first started up they used to have hanging sides of beef in the entry way, and would proudly show how fresh things were by carving them up and running it through the grinders. I guess this was more of a turn off for some of the more refined diners since they no longer have this degree of transparancy :D

Dugernaut Jul 29, 2009 10:41 am

The last Fudd's I ate at was in Hilton Head SC a couple of years ago. I wasn't impressed.

Years ago I was in CLE and ventured over to the east side to a really good Jewish deli, only to find it had been replaced by a Fudruckers. I’ve not forgiven them since, LOL. I don’t think they lasted very long there.

MarqFlyer Jul 29, 2009 2:43 pm

I used to love Fuddruckers when they first came out (or at least when I first became aware of them) about 20 or 25 years ago. Loved the burgers, loved the toppings, loved the atmosphere. Then I didn't see one for a while until a couple of years ago when I stumbled upon one in Washington DC. I was enormously disappointed. The burger was WAY overcooked (I ordered medium rare, and got a hockey puck), and when I went and complained, I got the same thing the second time around.

Thinking (hoping) it was just one bad experience, I went to another a short while later (in Phoenix maybe?). Unfortunately, I had the exact same experience, even though I was very emphatic in explaining what I meant by medium rare.

Someone earlier mentioned that it might be due to the E Coli thing, but this was dramatically worse than I have seen elsewhere. Did Fuddruckers itself have a big E Coli outbreak that makes management more sensitive than other chains?

Wish they were like they used to be....

When their burgers are fresh and done right it is truly a great hamburger. However, I have rarely found any of the restaurants willing to do medium rare anymore. Most will come out and tell you that they'll only do medium.

In their hey days, when they had the meat hanging in the storage room and carved it up during the day you could order the medium rare and it was terrific. As soon as business turned sour and the meat storage room was no longer used, they resorted to cooking at a minimum to medium.

That said, however, I was able to get a medium rare at a location in Maryland earlier this year and it was oh so good.

Doode.... you dont know much about Argentine lettuce eh...??

BamaVol Jul 29, 2009 8:08 pm

There's one in Clemson that I stop at on the way to Grandma BamaVols. If I have someone with me, we stop. I like the idea of being able to dress your burger as you wish and they're a couple steps above Roy Rogers (they still around). I think they're okay but if they want to be top tier, they just need to raise their prices. :D

Oh... pardon my ignorance.

So... which are the high-end places...?

IMHO: In and Out Burger. However none in Oregon or Washington. Only AZ, CA and NV. And it's not really high end, just really friekin good. No freezers and everything fresh.

In the Northwest> Burgerville. Good, straight forward. Same model, local ingredients.

But for truly local and high end burgers, stay away from the chains and find something local....please. Fuddruckers does have the worlds largest burger in Las Vegas, but I can't justify it.

If you ever make it Portland, I'll point you in the right direction. ^

Omnivore Jul 30, 2009 1:47 am

I agree with you about the fact that local places are the best if you want a true 'high-end' burger, but often you'll pay a lot more.

I really loved Fuddruckers, I like the interesting options, found it tasty and enjoyed the fact you could make your burger the way you wanted it. Haven't had a bad burger at Fuddruckers

violist Jul 30, 2009 6:01 am

The burgers at Fudd's usually aren't bad, and they cook them (medium-)rare for
me. Not the absolute most flavorful meat, except once in a while when I've had
one that tastes of putrefaction. I think on reflection I prefer an expensive
pink burger to the fairly costly gray thing from Five Guys or the fairly cheap
gray thing from In-n-Out. Except for that taste of putrefaction, of course.

mjcewl1284 Jul 30, 2009 7:48 am

They are decent, however 2 locations around me have recently closed.

"high-end" is a sort of misnomer when applied to burger joints.
Fuddruckers is priced slightly higher than fast-fast-food places and is in a sort of small niche with johnny rockets, red robin, and maybe something like becks prime which is a local chain. fuddruckers is the best of this lot

of the standard fast food burger places in-n-out is imo tops. (it is regional chain, however). whataburger is also very good. i prefer both of these to all of the above

as with most foods the best belong to independent local restaurants, either cheap "dive" bars or shacks or in fancier "gourmet" places (10-15-20$ burgers). for instance in austin texas one could list casino el camino, burgertex, fran/dan, huts, hyde park.

+1 on Culver's. Don't know if they've spread far enough to be considered a "national chain" yet, but they're way better than Fuddrucker's IMHO.

Culvers.... Ok, will check them out next time Im in the USA.

u600213 Aug 2, 2009 5:34 pm

There are Culver's and Fuddruckers here in Springfield Mo. Quite different atmospheres. Culver's is more traditional in decor and is known for frozen custard and butterburgers. I personally don't like butter on Hamburgers but YMMV. Culver's does have Pork Tenderloin sandwiches which I like. It is a breaded pork cutlet on a kaiser roll. I don't go to either very often but I get good use of the self serve condiments bar at Fuddruckers.
I can make a whole salad from it:-) Also Fuddruckers sells beer.

burgers are ok, butter burgers. Best thing about Culver's is the frozen custard. If you are ever at ORD, I'd be happy to take you to one seeing as I'm close to both ORD & a Culver's.

AGREED, I enjoy their burgers especially LOADED with their freshmade pico de gallo. I do mean loaded, my scoop of pico de gallo is as large as the burger as many a Fuddrucker's manager has commented.:D

FWIW, didn't think their Kobe burger was anything special.

Dudemius Aug 4, 2009 12:39 pm

I remember when they opened a store in New Orleans back in the early 1980's. It was on Tchoupitoulas, just around the corner from Mother's. They had the butcher shop with the hanging beef, burgers to order, a bakery, and awesome milkshakes. We all thought it was really good.

Judging from our store here in Alexandria VA it's just not the same quality product, and most of the features that made it special are gone. Still, I visit a couple times a year, and it beats most fast food.

Jaimito Cartero Aug 4, 2009 12:41 pm

I used to eat there a lot, but not so much anymore. The one closest to me, closed about 9 months ago.

ctuttle Aug 16, 2009 4:10 pm

Fudruckers is still around and is pretty good for a franchised burger place. They sell a larger thicker burger than your normal chains, and the meat doesn't appear to be the traditional frozen patties that is sold at many corporate food places (franchises), as it is generally jucier and you have a better shot at getting it cooked they way you like it than at other casual restaurant places.

Personally I like Five Guys better, and it is about the same price as Fudruckers. For a fast food burger, In N Out is a very good thin patty burger, and Culver's makes an excellent thicker burger that is a bargain. Problem is all of these are regional chains, which may be one of the reasons they are better than the national chains.

Curious_George Aug 16, 2009 4:28 pm

+1 on Culvers. When my wife is out I go there for a burger with onion rings and a chocolate malt!

I grew up in NOLA and remember that location. We first ate at Fuddruckers when visiting relatives in Houston and I remember being so excited when we got our own in NOLA. It was absolutely better back then. I went to one in the DC area and it was just kinda disappointed.

I much prefer both the burgers and the dining experience at Johnny Rockets to the one at Fuddruckers, at least comparing their Bay Area locations.

Red Robin is a good chunk pricier than either, and is much more a casual sit-down place that happens to focus on burgers than a "burger joint" per se - I'd imagine they see their competition more as Chilis or Applebees, given their pricing and rather broader non-burger menu (even with the heavy burger focus.)

Yup. And good local burger places are among the easiest things to find in most parts of the US that I've lived. For those on the peninsula south of San Francisco, Jersey Joe's (primarily a cheesteak place) in San Carlos and Jeffrey's in San Mateo both have very good burgers at reasonable prices.

For that matter, the central coast town which my wife is originally from is an absolute culinary wasteland - they don't even manage a good sit-down Mexican restaurant as far as I've found - but even THEY'VE got two good burger places, and a couple of good taco shops.

Money card Sep 5, 2011 9:05 pm

to me this is the worst burger place. Burger king and Mcdonalds are way better places.
the local place for me is in Hackensack New Jersey. I have never eaten there. it just doesn't look like Burger king or Mcdonalds.

I think of fuddruckers like wendys not the best fast food.

where you people live how many fudruckers are there?

I think in my area theres only 1.

Yeah you definitely have your own taste for food. I was actually really surprised that you thought Wendys is worse than McD and BK. In my opinion wendy is WAY better than McD and BK.

You can't judge food from commercials. If so, McDonald's would surely beat out Per Se or Daniel, given the marketing dollars McD's has to make their food look artificially good on TV.

Having eaten at a number of Fuddruckers, I'd say Fudds>Wendy's>BK>McD.

I did have one mediocre Fudd's experience, but all but that one have been delish. Contrast that with McDonald's, where all have been massive flops. ;)
