They are a bit cheaper then McDonalds.

Actually, this thread has reminded me that I have two CFA free-sandwich coupons somewhere in my car - time to clean out the glovebox :)

They didn't invent chicken, but they did invent the chicken sandwich! (Or their own advertising claims, anyway.)

Actually, up until a few years ago, I hardly went there. I do find their chicken strips and chicken sandwiches to be the best I've ever had at a fast food place. They also have a lot of specials and coupons, so you can eat cheap.

I don't see a lot of bible thumpers there, and wish they were open on Sunday, but hey, they can do what they want.

Jimgotkp Apr 27, 2010 8:33 pm

The nuggets and chicken sandwiches are to die for. Can't get any better than their waffle fries. Always receive top notch service from the people at my nearby location including them bringing my order to my table with a smile.

Gregory Nelson Apr 28, 2010 6:04 pm

Since they're a private company, they don't have to be motivated solely by money, unlike most public corporations.

If they want to let their assets sit unused for 1/7 of the time, for whatever reason, no one can tell them otherwise.

It's not any different than someone refusing to buy an American car (or refusing to buy a foreign car), even when it would be financially advantageous to do so.

If you want to hate on the Cathy family for being conservative Christians, go right ahead. But at least you can't hate on them for being hypocrites.

4now Apr 28, 2010 6:57 pm

We tend to want what we can't have:eek:...which is why CFA is so appealing on Sunday:p.

I seem to remember that being open on Sunday was a good strategy for Kentucky Fried Chicken, in the beginning.:)

Nothing (even aside from giving your money to religious wackos). They have the same grilled chicken sandwiches you can get at nearly any other fast food outlet; it's expensive for what it is; there's nothing special about the food; and maybe the extra cost is to make up for the money they lose being closed on Sundays.

Sorry, this just isn't true. The normal Chick-Fil-A sandwich is not grilled, but a slightly breaded or coated piece of chicken. Breast meat, I think, and very, very, tasty. I'm sure they probably do have a grilled version, but I've never tried it.

I've eaten fast food from every major chain in my area. McD, BK, Carl's Jr, In-N-Out, Fatburger, KFC, JitB, Sonic and a slew more. CFA has the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Really. Second best used to be the Sonic deep fried version, but they changed something with the recipe, and it's off the list.

The nuggets are good, but I prefer the sandwich or the strips. Very fast service, always polite, and a lot of coupons out there. They have a yearly calendar that they sell (or free if you buy a gift card), that has free stuff every month of the year.

I don't get off on the bible thumper stuff, but hey, they've got a right to their beliefs, as long as they keep pumping out their kick ... chicken. ;)

There are no CFAs in South Africa, so you're making me jones for one. Plus when I get back, it'll be Sunday, so I'm screwed there too. <Stan Marsh voice> You .......! :)

arollins Apr 30, 2010 4:51 am

They are finally opening one close to me!

At least Rt 59 in Aurora, IL is only a 10 minute drive. The other locations in IL are rural/remote areas.

crabbing Apr 30, 2010 2:41 pm

if you are in atlanta, and you have kids, you will visit chikfila. especially the ones with the indoor play areas.

as Jaimito Cartero mentioned, the regular chicken sandwich (chicken, pickle, and bun) is great. the grilled version is not as good.

but being closed on sundays, and the whole religious thing, are major turnoffs.

Zaxby's is my favorite, but there are only a couple in Charlotte. Then I go to Bojangles, then Chick-Fil-A. Ah, the joys of living in the land of fried chicken

Good afternoon!

The thread teeters on the edge ;)

Pejorative religious characterizations aren't not what Dining Buzz is about. More such, unfortunately, will get the thread sent to OMNI/PR.

Yes, CFA's Sunday closure is based on the owner family's religious convictions.

Noted, and further discussion of those convictions can take place elsewhere.

Civil and cordial discussions of the relative yumminess of their offerings, or the wish (or lack of it) that they might be open on Sundays in and of itself (outside of your evaluation of the merits of the reasons for the closure) are welcome.

Religious discussion per se is not.

Carry on.

Yes we do. In fact, I tend to think that is the best marketing job of all -- when you think about grabbing something and then remember that it's Sunday.

Hopefully they are not too wacko as they do many a great chicken sandwich and it is nice to see them opening the free standing locations the last number of years -- where when I was growing up 15-25 years ago you could only get the CFA fix by going to the mall.

shaggy_mutt May 3, 2010 2:35 pm

Ohhh, I love CFA. IMHO it's the best national fast-food chain, not least because they use better ingredients. Lean chicken breast instead of just 'meat from somewhere on a chicken'. Peanut oil (trans-fat free btw!) instead of Crisco. Fresh-squeezed lemonade instead of nasty reconstituted stuff. And Tabasco sauce, too!

skofarrell May 3, 2010 3:43 pm

I think the sandwich is pretty good.

One thing that makes them stand out in my book is that they do an awesome job supporting public schools. The "eat mor chikin" cow comes to any school event they're asked to attend, and they are always there for fund raisers (free or "at cost" sandwiches for resale).

pogopossum May 3, 2010 5:22 pm

I don't want to push this into Omni P/R, but I am just curious what other restaurants or other stores don't open on Sunday (regardless of reason). The only one that comes to mind is the Franklin Covey stores. Anybody know of any others?

There is a semi-large chain of appliance stores in the St. Louis area that is closed on Sundays. As the owner states in his TV commercials (with your typical St. Louis accent), "It's the Lard's day!"

I guess I should also add that many states still have "blue laws" in effect, which means certain businesses cannot be open on Sundays.

In Colorado, car dealerships are closed. It was only last year that liquor stores were (finally!) allowed to be opened on Sundays.

Non-NonRev May 3, 2010 9:46 pm

Not Sunday, but: long ago when I lived in L.A., there was a tire retailer named '4 Day Tire Store' - their business was built around having their stores open ten hours on Thursday through Sunday, and not being open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

They claimed that these were the hours that most of their customers wanted to buy tires and have them installed - they also stated in their ads that this policy allowed them to operate the stores with a single work shift, reducing costs and allowing lower prices.

Icypackattack May 8, 2010 9:27 pm

Thank god that they are closed at least 1 day per week...otherwise I would eat there every day.

HawaiiTrvlr May 9, 2010 2:38 pm

I like the little chicken and biscuit things they sell in the mornings. They are incredible.

jbcarioca May 10, 2010 11:47 am

I really like Chick-fil-A, no question. I wish they were open on Sunday because that's my only fast food day. I hope that's not too religious :)

I think Hobby Lobby is closed on Sundays...

Isn't that going a little to the extreme? I mean, CFA is good, but it isn't that good.

Since I like fries, I generally stay way from getting my meat fried too, so I stick with the grilled and it is actually quite good. IMHO, the best grilled chicken sandwich of any fast food restaurant and better than some fast casual and sit down chains. I like that they use halfway decent lettuce and tomato and you can get a quite tasty whole wheat bun.

As an atheist, the religious thing bugs me too, but I have no problem giving business to a place that makes a good product. If they were actively discriminating against people, I would have a problem, but simply being religious and closed on Sundays doesn't bother me. Indeed, Cathy himself said that his religion isn't the only reason they close on Sunday. They also do it, as mentioned elsewhere, to give their employees at least one day of rest a week. That is something I really can appreciate, as an employment lawyer, because there are tons of people who get completely screwed on their work schedules.

N1120A May 10, 2010 4:51 pm

BTW, CFA have started opening restaurants here in Southern California over the past 5 years or so, which makes me happy. :D

Here in L.A., we have quite a famous place for suits called 3 Day Suit Broker that works on the same philosophy. They sell designer suits for big mark downs, but are only open Friday-Sunday (some open on Thursday too now I think). Saves on all kinds of costs.

I do enjoy their chicken sandwiches and breakfast biscuits. But when I'm in the south and have a choice between CFA and Zaxby's I'll choose Zaxby's every time.

Those are good too :D but I think HawaiiTrvlr was referring to the breakfast biscuit. It's a big fluffy biscuit (also available without meat, for those who'd rather put honey or jelly on it) with a piece of chicken - or alternately with bacon, egg, and cheese.

Oh knock it off, you guys, you're making me hungry! :D

Do you think they will ever back down to their strong beliefs and open on Sunday.

After hearing about Chick-fil-a for years, I finally tried one a few years ago when at a convention in the midwest. 'twas just OK, better prices than the Colonel's (well, part of that may be midwest vs. California) but not as tasty.

As for the "open on Sunday" thing, *shrug* their business, their choice. My favorite local Lebanese place is closed Sun and Mon. *shrug* ... if I get a hankering for schwarma for a Monday lunch, I'll end up getting gyro instead.

Hey, free new Chick-Fil-A spicy sandwich!

I just got an email where you can sign up to try out the new Spicy Chicken sandwich, starting at the end of May. It gets introduced to everyone on June 7th.

It was sent as a target email, so I don't think you can just print out a coupon. You also have to pick a time range on a particular day and location to sign up for.

I was bumming, as I had seen the sign up for the new sandwich, but was going out of the country for a month on June 4th!

I was raised as a conservative Christian so I figured I could fake it when they asked me to take the religious test before ordering. The food was actually pretty good. It was a nice break from the typical greasy burgers (which I really like). I was glad to see that they had different entrees from most other places. I go in now and get the same thing everytime, chicken sandwich, carrot & raisin salad and diet lemonade (where else can you get that?).

Now I'm hungry. I think I'll go to the one across the street from my house and get lunch. :D

Mrs BV goes there because it's one of the few fast food chains where you can get a diet uncaffeinated soda. Neither one of us is crazy about the food there since I started on Weight Watchers, but I used to order the nuggets. I still order the diet lemonade but have to add 3 splenda packets since it's so sour.

Just tried the sandwich--not bad. Nice spice, although I would've liked ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing, rather than just mayo on the side.

Jaimito Cartero May 31, 2010 5:42 pm

Thumbs up, but not all I had hoped for.

I just tried it for lunch today. I thought the spicy was quite nice. I got it with the pepperjack cheese, so it might be spicier than most people enjoy. It was not as good as the normal sandwich, though. I was hoping for basically the same as the normal sandwich, just just spicy.

I enjoyed the sandwich today - I also enjoyed the coupon I got for another one free once the sandwich officially launches next week, merely for coming in to try it during the pre-release period ;)
