Lime-favored light beer
I took a chance and bought a Miller Chill last night, because they were selling onesies at a local bodega, and I had seen commercials for the Bud version so I thought - what the hell?
It was surprisingly good. At least as good as a Corona with a lime in it, if not better (probably fresher). I'd drink it again. Anyone else tried these summer concoctions? They are not in the same class as the disgustingly sweet flavored malt liquors (Smirnoff Ice, etc.). It was actually quite refreshing. |
Yes I have also tried it recently. I did enjoy it though I prefer Coronas with lime and salt. :p:cool:
|
Something, to me, feels quite wrong about buying my additives already in my beer. If I want lime in the beer, why not cut one up, versus going for simu-lime flavor?
Just my $0.02. Cheers, -Andrew |
When it comes to adding citrus to my beer, I'd rather do it with beer that actually tastes like beer. My preference is weissbier with either an orange or a lemon.
|
I tried one of those Miller Chills last weekend. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. Not as tasty as say a belgian white with a slice of orange in it...but a nice summer beer.
|
I thought it was weird when I first saw it advertised. I haven't tried it yet, but we were at a camping trip last weekend with a couple dozen people. Ther first night there were two six packs of it. The second night pretty much everybody bought some. It all went before I could grab one.
So no first hand experience, only because a couple dozen other people got them all first. |
Bud Light Lime tastes better than Bud Light IMO. There are three flavored Mich Ultras, but none are in my area.
Lime Cactus A fruit-infused light pilsner with natural lime flavor and a floral essence derived from the cactus. Pomegranate Raspberry A pilsner with a berry aroma, raspberry flavor, and a hint of pomegranate. Tuscan Orange Grapefruit A pilsner with fresh juicy orange notes and a slight pink-grapefruit finish. |
I second that.. I like "Bood Light Lime better" it's taste better Miller Lite.. ^

The mere thought of some crappy citrus being bottled with crappy beer is disgusting. A cheap marketing gimmick that hopefully wont be around next year as another cheap marketing gimmick will surely replace it.

Perhaps we'll also get over that fad next year as well.. |

I respectfully disagree. My brother and I tried this stuff last summer and thought it was horrible. But, we must be in the minority since Bud has since introduced their own version of it, and there's something else called Landshark that I've seen advertised. Go figure.
|
I've tried 3 of the beers under discussion - I don't know what I was thinking.
Miller Chill - overwhelmingly salty!!! Mich Orange/Grapefruit - ok, but not one of their better efforts. Landshark - pukey aftertaste. I prefer my beer not taste like vomit until much later in the evening. I like my beer to taste like something, and a cold brew on a hot day (it's 97 outside right now) can have a little fruit flavor IMO. I'll stick to Abita Purple Haze rather than buy any of these 3 again. |
My girlfriend makes this drink, she likes to use Corona. She doesn't use the tomato juice but does make it with lots of tabasco.
Michilata Some people think a Michilata is just a glass with a salted rim and lime juice poured over ice. Here is the real thing! 1 whole lime 1/2 lemon 4 dashes Tabasco 1 dash salt 1 dash Lawry's seasoned salt 2 pinches pepper 1 dash Worcestershire Tomato juice Tecate ( or other Mexican beer ) In a chilled pilsner glass with a salted rim, squeeze in juice from lime and lemon. Add Tabasco, salts, pepper, and Worcestershire , and then fill glass 1/4 full with tomato juice. Fill the rest of the glass with Tecate or other Mexican beer. Garnish with lime wheel or wedge. |
Miller Chill - not bad on a hot day (which is what these flavored beers are for IMHO), but I agree with one poster, too salty.
Bud Light Lime - Actually pretty tasty for this type of beer Add fruit to a Weiss Beer???? Dear god, NO!!!!! A good Weiss should be enjoyed as it was meant to be. Of course, my opin only, but......... :) |
I second the vote for Coronas with lime and salt ... though the Chills aren't a bad second.

What can I say but, A person that loves the real thing. Ah so refreshing. |
Ughhhh... Mass produced lime flavoured American beer. Don't the breweries remember the horrible Tequiza experiment from a decade ago??? I'd sooner drink my own urine... :D

Tried a Miller Chill (yay, freebies in the bar) last year... WAY too much salt flavor. Overpowered the lime and beer, so I instinctively wanted to gargle. :)
Tried a "Bud Lime" (God bless the honeys handing them out free in the bar), and went back to buy my own. I really like the flavor (but I'm a beer conno-sewer, not a connoisseur). By the end of the evening, 75% of my friends were drinking them too. The Tequiza and Chill drinks were trying to be "authentic"... this is just beer with a tinge of lime: much more approachable. |
I had the miller chills last year when the local college bar either had them on promo or was clearancing them out for 2 bucks each ;). I was pleasantly surprised at how much better it tasted than I thought it would. I agree on the saltiness comments though. I can't bring myself to be seen buying Budweiser so I can't comment on the Bud Light Lime :p
|
I had a couple of Bud Limes tonight. To be honest, I prefer Tequiza (if that's my option).

NOW you're talkin'.^ Or a Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.:) FYI Germans don't put fruit in their hefes so you'd be doing it wrong... :p ... even though I myself LOVE an orange wedge in a hefe or even a (gasp!) Belgian white. |
It's true that ..."Germans don't put fruit in their hefes so you'd be doing it wrong..."
But it's common to add a shot of raspberry or woodruff flavored syrup to a Berliner weisse. The Americanized version from Delaware's Dogfish Head brewery uses peaches to cut the sour tartness. It's a marvelous thing to drink in hot weather. |
I am amazed, no, appalled, that none of the posters have written a word as to the history of "lime in beer"....
First, Corona, in my youth, a cheap, almost "generic" beer in Mexico (hence the machine-painted bottle labeling, saving money on refills in the days when beer bottles were refilled) was served on Mexican airlines and in brothels and cheap "nigh clubs", along with such brands as Cruz Blanca and "whisky" with names like "Club 45". There were no limes served with Corona until Gambrinus, now also the owners of the Shiner, Texas brewery producing that now-cultish range of brews, began to massively import it into the US, making it apparently now, the "Most sold" import. Limes were served with the original steel-can Tecate, best known in Baja and SoCal. There was good reason. The Tecate cans lent more than a hint of rust to the brew and lime helped. I have seen among lesser saloons in parts of Mexico lager beers served with "Sangrita" or similar mixes, tomato/citrus blends originally served with straight tequila blanco. Mexican beers are almost all better than US production brews. Personally, I prefer Bohemia and best of all Negra Modelo, but Corona does have more flavor than the US mass bottlings. Miller Chill seems to have some hint of beer behind the flavorings, while Bud's Limes, are like Bud Light, as near to non-beer as beer can be. Of course, one who dulled his palate on far too many cans of Carling's government contract, tropically stable, formalin-laced brew, shouldn't claim expertise. But then I remember when Lone Star was king, and even Pearl was drinkable. |

:td: I don't like any of those additives at all.
|
I tried Miller Chill when it first came out, and really didn't like it -- I don't think it was the salt aftertaste others here have noted, but rather that it seemed like I could taste the Splenda-ish aftertaste of the additive.
I generally can't stand Budweiser products -- I get a headache even thinking about drinking a Bud -- but my bartender sister-in-law told me I needed to try the Bud Light lime. I thought I was in for another disappointing experience, even though this is coming from the girl who puts limes in her Amstel Light. When I tried it, I was surprised to find that I really did like it. It was actually quite decent. (Of course, I won't be saying that tomorrow as we host our annual Jimmy Buffett party, since there will be Coronas and margaritas aplenty. But as a "quick swig after/while mowing the lawn," I thought it was good.) |

This type of beer (supposedly) isn't brewed in Austria anymore, making for an interesting story. |

BL Lime (the official name) is simply horrible. It is a VERY watered down light beer without any flavor at all. I couldn't even taste the lime. Yecch!

The funny thing is whenever the subject of Budweiser comes up on any forum on the web, virtually every single person says they despise it. Yet, it is still the largest selling beer in the US (world?). Who does drink all of it?
I happen to like Bud, and I drink my share, but somebody else out there is helping to make it #1. |
Saw a new one - BigFoot - in stubbies at my local a few weeks ago. A friend tried it, apparently it tastes like Corona + Lime
