Nestle ad banners. coincidence?
is anyone else getting candy bar ad banners on these pages? now that's targetted marketing. i'm impressed and creeped out at the same time.
|
Moana Loa dark chocolate with coffee bits. Decadent and delish!! We've only founbd them in HI and a few mainland Hilo Hatties.
|
I didn't realize Salted Nut Rolls were only in the Midwest, but I guess I haven't really seen them around since I moved back to Texas. I just remember something similar that was available at Stuckey's all over the place when we went on family road trips...
Something I have only seen in the Midwest is Valomilk. Love them! There are 2 cups in a package (like Reese's) - chocolate on the outside, marshmallow cream on the inside. Doesn't quite taste like marshmallow, though - it's very creamy/runny - not sure how else to describe it. From England I love Toffee Crisp and Maltesers (not quite a candy bar, but so much better than Whoppers!). |

Surprised no one has mentioned a Moon Pie. Even better, an RC Cola and a Moon Pie. :)
Don't know how regional these are (since I haven't looked here on the west coast) but Little Debbie snacks, especially the Swiss Rolls, are made in TN and were a favorite of my childhood. I think of them as being in a similar category as Moon Pies. I don't eat them often but once in a while I get a craving for them. |

Have you tried a Goo Goo Cluster? This was the local Nashville specialty when I was growing up. Caramel, marshmallow and peanuts (or pecans, in the Supreme version) slathered with chocolate. Like a Turtle on steroids. I haven't had one in years, because I like my fillings to stay where they are.
Goo Goos were part and parcel of my childhood in BNA. The Standard Candy Co in BNA still makes 'em and they are available at any Cracker Barrel store (which has HQ at Lebanon TN near BNA)...so convenient for my occasional cravings. I tend to favor the Supremes with pecans these days. Standard Candy Co also used to make the King Leo peppermint sticks in the round metal tin...anyone seen 'em lately? |

My absolute favorite were the toasted coconut covered marshmellows! Don't know if they were a midwest thing but I can't find them anymore.:(
And a peanut butter club sandwich? I've never heard of that. Who makes them??? My personal favorites that are very hard to find are the Idaho Spud & Rocky Road marshmellow bars. |

Minnesota Pearson's Candy Company sells Nut Goodies (a concoction of chocolate, maple, and peanuts) and Salted Nut Rolls only in the midwest. They also sell a mint patty nation-wide. All three are wonderful.
Years ago they used to also do a 7-up bar - a long chocolate bar with 7 little squares along it containing 7 different flavored (cherry, coconut, caramel, fudge, jelly, maple, and Brazil nut). Sort of like a little box of chocolates all in one. And that was back when my finances were severely limited so a big treat was to go to their outlet store and buy the seconds. A loose bag of these bars where the squares weren't lined up neatly enough or maybe there was a missing one or the bar was short. They came in both light and dark chocolate. Probably my all-time favorite, even the factory outlet "seconds". Romelle 7 up bar sounds like the Skybar here in New Hampshire but they only have 4 flavors. http://www.necco.com/OurBrands/Default.asp?BrandID=11 |
Drool, drool, this is the best thread ever!
Cherry Bings (think that's what they're called) with the coconut. Um, candy, um. Travel, candy, tequila, Belgian beer, candy, bliss. |

OMG!! I love those! But they were called Malo (or Mallo) Cups. I used to steal them from my brothers Halloween bag.:D:D
I kept them in business during my teenage years in Pittsburgh!! But lately, when I travel through Harrisburg, and I buy Mallo Cups, they just don't taste like they used to... |
There is this potato candy bar in Idaho. I dont recall the name but it isnt very good.

Seven Up bar was a favorite and unfortunately long gone.
In my travel adventures I have found the following treats: Japan: Honeydew flavored Kit Kat Switzerland: Creme Brulé Lindt Chocolate |

Look carefully where they're made. The last time I had a peek, it was in Indonesia. Campbell Soup owns Arnott so I am guessing the Tim Tam name was owned by someone else in N. America hence the change of name for use in N. America. You can get them here in the States at Cost Plus World Market. They sell them as "Arnott's Biscuits". But I've only ever seen the chocolate and chocolate caramel filled ones. They have a much better assortment available in Australia. :D I like the Dark Chocolate ones and my friend just got back from Sydney and brought back some Kahlua filled ones. Yummmmm. |
Definitely Bounty Bars in Europe. Much better tasting (to me) than Mounds.

Canadian chocolate is awful, especially milk chocolate, it has a grainey taste IMO, much prefer US or European chocolate. But most of all, and unfortuantely it doesn't rate as a regional chocolate I even saw one in Macau at the Venetian, is See's Candies, especially their dark chocolate of any kind.mmmmmmmmmm

I also thought of GooGoo's as soon as I saw this topic. I remember being disappointed in them. When we first arrived in Knoxpatch 20 years ago, we were given a box of them, maybe 24 in the box and I threw out 20. 4 kids and none would eat a second one.
I'm more a fan of long gone or almost gone candy like the Nestle Skybar or Necco Wafers or b-b-bats or Sugar Daddys. |
The Wall Street Journal last week had a great article on Remembrance of Candy Bars Past which mentions many regional treats.
I really enjoyed this article - which got me thinking... hey, this is Flyertalk, where could we find these delicious treats without having to leave the airport ?? ;) Let's post our finds ! Any candy mentioned in the article, and best possible description of where to find them... airports are big. (Mods please feel free to dissociate from initial thread if appropriate) NB: most of these can be bought online - this is just for the fun of looking for them. Cheers, J- |
Goo Goo clusters
Here's one...
Goo Goo clusters, Memphis airport (MEM), several locations including Memphis Kitchen, terminal B, at the 'fork'; near gates B7 and B27. Cheers, J- PS - I have a couple of said clusters which I would be happy to share with curious fellow travellers from Europe (to avoid any customs issues with the packet). PM me. |
If your travels take you through/to London, England, then stop at any shop, Boots, local store and pick up a BOOST (by Cadbury - soon to be Kraft). By far, the BEST chocolate bar I've ever had. I love it so much, I usually pick up a whole box and bring it back home with me to Beirut.

Wintergreen as a flavour is completely unknown in Europe.
