Your favorite mixed drink recipes

I love Tom Collins, and I make my own (of course)

I start with
Tom Collins or highball glass (or even a beer pint glass ;) )
Add about 1.5 parts lemon - fresh squeezed
3 parts Bombay Sapphire
1-1.5 parts simple sugar (matters how sweet you want it) - I make my own at home, better suger and its "fresher"
top it all off with good quality sparking water (I like Perrier)
pour over ice in the glass and mix

I get a excellent drink, I would say my favorite

What about yours? :D

BOB W Sep 4, 2007 1:31 pm

Bacardi & Coke-keep it simple Sally

1 part Bacardi rum
3 parts Coca Cola (not diet, not Pepsi, not a knock off cola...use the real Coke)

Pour over a glass full of ice at 36,000 feet heading anywhere warm, preferably in F

troyb Sep 4, 2007 1:33 pm

Vodka Diet Coke

3 parts vodka (nothing fancy - Smirnoff is fine)
1 part Diet Coke

Mix, then sip, cringe, and repeat

ECOTONE Sep 4, 2007 3:57 pm

I love a Mt. Gay & Tonic.

I don't use any method of measuring the liquid, but it probably works out to about 3 parts Rum to 1 part tonic. Mt. Gay rum tastes so good on its own that despite these being strong, the taste is very smooth. Usually garnish with a lime.

These are REALLY good.

I'll always stop what I'm doing for a Malibu Sunset.

Fill a glass with ice.
2 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
Fill with Pineapple Juice.
Pour 1/2 oz Creme De Nouyax down a spoon to bottom of glass.
Garnish with Pineapple.

This is wonderful in the summer!

Italy98 Sep 4, 2007 5:39 pm

Not sure of the name and as the first time I had one was on an early morning DL flight I call it a Delta Sunrise - Amaretto (split in to two glasses - one each for Mrs Italy98 and me) and topped with OJ.

For me, a nice martini always does the trick...

Fill shaker with a few cubes of ice. Top liberally with Ketel One.
Open vermouth bottle.
Put the cap back on the vermouth bottle - that was enough.
Shake, stir, flip, whatever mood I'm in.
Pour into glass. Add 2 jumbo garlic-stuffed olives. Enjoy.

(Damn...that's not a mixed drink? Ok, here goes again...)

My favorite margarita is made with Cuervo gold, Cuervo margarita mix, a big chunk of lime, and my secret ingredient - a splash of Grand Marnier.

jason8612 Sep 4, 2007 7:23 pm

a martini is a mixed drink. there was at one time ice in it :)

brendog Sep 4, 2007 8:51 pm

Pour Lagavulin (16, of course) in glass. Add 2 rocks. Enjoy.

Seat13F_AC_CRJ Sep 4, 2007 9:08 pm

Sauvignon Blanc
Shiraz or Bordeaux blend
Port
Keep in separate glasses. Don't pour until first glass, or two, has been consumed.

my favorite this summer has been a Painkiller, made with Pusser's rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut.

That's way too much vermouth. Just taking it off the shelf is overkill ;) :D

My favorite: Vodka Gimlet

Ice + Grey Goose + Lime Juice = Love

((As a bartender I learned young that dry meant DRY. Never, ever put vermouth in a martini ordered dry. -- As a corollary, I always found it amusing when martini's sent out this way (i.e. Chilled Gin) were sent back with instructions to make the next one "Dryer"))

I must agree, however gin is vastly superior to vodka. I recommend the North Shore Gin from Chicago.

Mai Tai

Since I didn't make it to Hawaii this spring for the first time in a few years, Mrs. PVDProf suggested (demanded) I try to make (her) a passable Mai Tai at home.

For two (find a friend, or enjoy another!), mix
2 oz white rum (Cruzan)
1.25 oz Amaretto
1 oz triple sec
3 oz good, pulpy OJ
3 oz pineapple juice
Juice of half a lime

Pour half the mixture into a shaker with 4-5 ice cubes, and shake vigorously. Pour into a glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry (I have to make an extra garnish for Master PVDProf). Float 1 oz very dark (Meyers) rum. Repeat with other half of the mixture.

mjcewl1284 Apr 20, 2009 8:48 am

White Russian for myself

2 oz. Vodka (I use an offbrand)
1 oz. Coffee liqeur (Always Kahlua)
A pinch of Half&Half
Fill with ice cubes

When my wife and I want to enjoy a drink
Vodka Cran Cooler

My wife likes equal parts of vodka and cranberry juice but I go a bit heavy with the vodka.

2 oz. Vodka (Offbrand)
2 oz. Cranberry Juice Cocktail (I like the cocktail, I find 100% doesn't really cut it)
Fill in blender with ice cubes, mix, enjoy.

No better gin than Hendricks. Sapphire will do in a pinch.

Ooooh! This is one of my favorites and can be deadly. I prefer it in a tall glass with lots of crushed ice and fresh-squeezed, pulpy* orange juice. I call it an Amaretto and OJ in a tall glass with lots of crushed ice. :)

*raises glass to PVDProf for use of his term "pulpy" to describe orange juice as it should be :)

One 12 oz. can of Coca-Cola. I'll agree with the "not diet, not Pepsi, not knock off brand" line. Gotta be straight up Coca-Cola. :)

Disarrono (however much you like).

Pour half of the can of Coke into a glass. Pour in Disarrano. Top with the rest of the Coke. :D

Can also be done with: Vodka (I prefer Lime or Vanilla Vodka and Coke), Jack, Black Velvet, Crown...whatever you like. ;)

missydarlin Apr 20, 2009 10:53 pm

juice of one lime
2-3 Tbs simple syrup
10 mint leaves
rum to taste (also tasty with vodka or cachaca)

add all of the above to tall glass of ice
muddle, muddle, muddle, muddle.... and muddle

top off the glass with club soda
stir
mmmmmmmmmm

smi26 Apr 26, 2009 3:53 pm

my version of a purple haze martini.

1 1/2 oz. pomegranate juice ( I prefer pomegranate liquer for a stronger martini)
1 1/2 oz cranberry juice
1 1/2 oz. Hpnotiq®
1 1/2 oz blue curacao

1 medium sized lime squeezed into the martini shaker, shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with lime rind.

Take 2 heavy "footed" Martini glasses (not stemmed, but shaped and sized as is a stemmed marini glass) anda liter of (a) Bombay Sapphire or (b) Monopolowa Vodka (made in Vienna from potatoes) and place in deep freeze overnight.

Take a lemon, warm it between your hands (or better yet, between the thighs of an attractive receptive woman - after a couple of these she'll be even more receptive), cut a couple of strips of peel, attempting to minimize the "white".

Think of a vermouth label, picturing it in your imagination, holding it there.

Remove glasses and booze, pouring a hefty double in each glass, twist the lemon peels over the booze, and then rub them about the rims of the glasses, dropping them in or discarding at your option.

Partake!

Hmm... always wondered what else one could do with Disarrono... :p Usually just had it 'on the rocks' in the SEA PC :D -Now something new to try ^

SEA WC - they had a list of 'drinks' they offered... on this list, was vermouth! So, I asked, what is vermouth? They answered that it wasn't a drink really and someone messed up by putting it on the list, as its a kind of mix in for Martini's (Which IIRC they don't have a mixer for anyway- so pointless to have vermouth) but I did sample a tiny bit...

Mmm... a white russian- Had one (or two :p) on Friday in the SEA PC- good stuff! - A twist the matron offered was to put in some seltzer water to add a little twist- not bad!

Just made this one up myself at Easter (I always have a signature drink when we have company) and it was soooo good....tasted like Hawaiian Punch and was similar to a good Mai Tai...went down WAY too easy!

2 oz. Malibu Rum
2 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. Cranberry juice

Simple. Obviously you could play with the proportions, and certainly add garnish. I just threw it together at the last minute and was shocked at how great it tasted.

^^ Hendricks is excellent stuff. Tanqueray also goes well, as does Plymouth. Not keen on Saphhire or Gordons.

Very interesting! May I ask how much seltzer water the bartender added?

I'm more of a beer guy, but I've been known to enjoy a Dark and Stormy.
Ginger beer (not a true beer, just a very gingery soda to the point of being hot - Stewarts makes a good one)
Dark rum to taste (Goslings black seal)
Ice
squeeze of lime

shiv666 May 11, 2009 8:21 am

jager and coke... tastes like rootbeer!!!

Starwood Lurker May 11, 2009 11:41 am

When we stayed at The Westin Diplomat recently I went down to Barsu to have a late dinner. This establishment is primarily a sushi bar, but since I've never done sushi I opted for the pork dumplings, which were very good.

You can also order anything from Aiza at Barsu as well, which is the more formal sit-down oriental-style restaurant. Looking over their options, I came across a fairly unique-sounding Old Fashion made with Knob Creek and since this is one of my favorite bourbons, I thought I'd give it a try.

It was made with crushed marichino cherries, a liquer made of calendula and pears, and pretty healthy dose of Knob Creek. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the name of the drink was on the menu, but the receipt said "Not Your Old Fashioned Old Fashion".

I'm not sure I could have downed more than one of these in one sitting as it sent me scurrying for the safety of my room fairly quickly thereafter. But, if you ever make down that way, this is one that you really should try if you like Old Fashions. ;)

Certainly :D

I'd have to say a quarter or third of a can... just enough to give it a nice aftertaste... (IIRC - I was kinda under the influence :p)

Tampa_traveler May 20, 2009 8:13 pm

I sure like those "painkillers" they serve at the Soggy Dollar down in the BVI. Lots of Pusser's rum....but don't know the exact recipe. Do you know?

husker267 May 21, 2009 7:31 am

Tampa - This guy spends a lot of time on Anegada and has a page dedicated to food and drink of the BVI's and variations there of. I've made his recipe for a painkiller which is excellent. However, I have yet to go to the BVI's so I can't compare against the real deal.

Missy, try replacing the rum sometime with cachaça ^

Speaking of cachaça, one of my favorite mixed drinks as of late is a Caipirinha, especially as it is starting to get warm out, sooooo refreshing.

My other is asking a bartender to make any mixed drink they see fit with tequila but the drink can not be a margarita or tequila sunrise. It is amazing the lack of imagination that most bartenders have and mind you I'm not asking them if the bar/restaurant is busy. 25% immediately say they can't think of anything else, 50% take a bit longer to say they can't think of anything else, BUT there is 25% that make a real effort to be creative, lots of fun and some of the creations have been delicious.

Had a Dark and Stormy last week at Drink in Boston. With their own house-made ginger beer. O. M. G. If I could get my hands on their ginger beer, I'd swill Dark and Stormys all summer.

Lately, due to having smuggled a couple of liters of Havana Club Reserva Añejo back from CUN I've been enjoying this drink:
2 oz. gold rum (if you can't get Cuban rum Mount Gay will do nicely)
1/2 oz. Citronge (if you can get Creole Shrub even better)
half a lime
Fill short glass with sturdy rocks. Squeeze lime half into glass, put the heel into glass. Add Citronge and rum. One pass into and out of a mixing glass, relax and enjoy on the rocks. Optional: if you're using Cuban rum, light a cigar and call yourself el patron :D

marais Jun 1, 2009 5:03 pm

And here's one I had tonight, so refreshing after a long day's work and very appetizing before dinner:
2 oz. gin (Beefeater's is my mixing gin standby)
1/2 oz. Aperol (less might be better for some)
freshly squeezed juice of 1/2 grapefruit
Build over ice, mix briefly and serve on the rocks.

J Walker Blue in a four ounce glass over three ice cubes^:D
