Is Coca Cola in Canadia also made wtih sugar (like Cuban sugar?) When I HAVE to have Coke it seems to taste better overseas.

That Canadian Coke formula tricked me when I did a Pepsi Challenge there during a YYZ do a few years ago. ;)

Still a PEPSI person and loving the stuff.

I seem to remember that drinking Coke & Coke products in Japan last year tasted way better. But everything tastes better in Japan, except for Mexican food.

Catman - I was solidly Coke only until the Diet Pepsi Max came out a few weeks ago. It's the best tasting Pepsi I've ever had.

I remember when they first introduced the corn syrup-flavored Coke. It was right after the "New Coke" debacle in the 80s. After all the huge protests against New Coke, the company announced, to much fanfare, that they were going to bring back "Classic Coke." Upon my very first sip of the re-released "Classic," I knew that it was not the true, original Coke. Sure enough, a review of ingredients confirmed that it was flavored with corn syrup, not sugar!! It was NOT the original Coke, despite the public assurances from company executives! Real Classic Coke never returned!!

The whole idea that Coke suddenly switched from sugar to HFCS is largely an urban legend, as Coke had been using HCFS as early as 1980 - five years or so before the New Coke fiasco:

That being said, though, I've read various articles (whether they be rumors or just wishful thinking, I don't know) that have suggested that Coke and other soda makers may switch back to sugar, with the increasing price of corn. I live in a place where Mexican Coke is abundant, but it'd be nice to not have to pay a dollar or more per bottle, either.

I guess that is why Coca-Cola in the Philippines taste so good too. I thought it was the glass bottle:) You can buy them in a Filippino store (maybe Asian stores too) if you have one in your area.

The middle shelf in the soft-drink aisle at Las Tarascas, a Latino supermarket in Lawrenceville, Ga., was bare last week. But store manager Erik Carvallo couldn't call the local Coca-Cola bottler to replenish his stock of Coke.

The Coke Mr. Carvallo's customers had snapped up comes in scuffed glass bottles stamped "Hecho en Mexico" -- made in Mexico. It found its way to this Atlanta suburb through an underground supply chain that flouts Coca-Cola Co.'s long-established distribution system.

Mexican-made Coke is such a popular taste of home for many immigrants that Las Tarascas sells about 20 cases a week, or nearly 500 12-ounce bottles at $1.25 apiece. "It's what they grew up with," says Mr. Carvallo. Meanwhile, he sells fewer than five cases a week of the cheaper U.S. version, in cans and plastic bottles on a nearby shelf after his Mexican supply is gone. (A plastic 20-ounce bottle of U.S. Coke sells in some parts of the country for about $1.)

Hmmm. I had never even heard any of the rumors or the urban legend. I was speaking directly from my own personal experience. And I remember very vividly that the taste of re-introduced Classic was clearly different from the original (pre-New Coke) drink. It was then that I noticed HFCS on the label. I suppose HFCS might have been there before New Coke, but I could have sworn the Coke I drank before was flavored with sugar. :confused:

I dunno about that. I remember very vividly that compared to the prior product, New Coke tasted flat, gummy and greasy, and you couldn't seem to get it cold enough; it had no bite. When we got "Classic Coke" back a couple of months later it could have been the stuff we were drinking before, but now it was hard to be sure. We regarded the Coke label with new suspicion. The New Coke debacle screwed up brand perceptions something fierce, which is one reason why (A) Coke abandoned the one-true-cola position, the "Real Thing" thing, and began generating dozens of weird variant brand extension products, and (B) I switched to Diet Pepsi.

Also, maybe glass bottles do have something to do with taste clarity and retention. I used to buy Diet Coke 16-ounce returnable bottles by the case in the early 1980s and it tasted great. Today's Diet Coke in plastic or cans tastes like water with potting soil in it.
