Opened up a bottle of High West Double Rye tonight.
Not bad but doesn't pack the punch I enjoy from the similarly priced baby Sazerac that's my go-to rye. That said I didn't love the last High West I bought but after letting it sit for a few months I came back to it and loved it so hoping the same here. |

Just got a bottle of Woodford Reserve as a gift - never had it am excited to try it.
Not that I don't drink the stuff neat too. There's a half a bottle on top of the bar at home and I hear it calling my name. |

Once you try it you'll switch to DL just for the free Woodford in C+ / F / D1 (and in all of Y on international flights) and never look back :D

Bar in LEX partly owned by a friend of mine sold Pappy shots at cost recently. “Pappy Thanksgiving.” Brilliant idea, I thought. https://www.foodandwine.com/news/che...e-thanksgiving |

Opened a new THH today - fantastic. Had always been one of my favorites. May do a blind taste against KO1, 2, WFE 10 and Redemption Ancients 18. |

I was disappointed neither I nor my wife won a GTS in the VA ABC lottery. They had like 10x the bottle allocation of GTS as some of the stuff we have won (like the Parker's for this year, which was fantastic)... guess luck wasn't in our favor.
Drinking some Jefferson Twin Oak right now; when I first opened it Sunday, I wasn't impressed (it was more a $40 bourbon than an $80 one), but tonight, it's drinking much better. Still a bit overpriced at $80, though. |

I'm only lukewarm on the Double Rye, and I tend to really like other High West whiskies. The Midwinter's Night Dram, the Bourye (and Son of Bourye), etc., are all good rye/high-rye whiskies they put out. Yippie-kay-yay is a bit too mellow for my tastes in rye from their lineup, too, FWIW.

Have made a bunch of pickups over the past few weeks, but a few that stand out (and aren’t unobtanium): - New Riff single barrel - Pinhook - Willett 4yr rye - OKI 10 year (by New Riff) Got lucky and got Old Forester Birthday Bourbon at retail Friday - considering trading it out. I’ve also found that I’ve been going for my Kentucky Owl Rye, OWA and Blanton’s Gold much more often, so picked up some backups :D |

Keep an eye out for Double Rye store picks - they're bottled at full proof. MWND is great, but I'm not particularly liking Act 6 Scene 1 - has a bit of a brine-y taste to it. Yippie is a vile, disgusting bottle. Hated it on opening it and hated it just as much after letting it sit a bit. Just gave the bottle away as I didn't even want it on my shelf.
Will have to look for Double Rye store picks. Some of the online shops I use get them regularly; VA ABC not so much so, but there are MD shops I think that do. |
Need an Education
.... I am neither a bourbon drinker nor know much of anything about aged liquor.... and was hoping the connoisseurs here might be able to give me some insights on two bottles of bourbon which my wife has from her deceased father. The first is Very Very Old Fitzgerald, and the second is Old Weller. My father-in-law most likely received them as gifts sometime in 1980's. They both have screw tops (not corked), and what appears to be tax stamps.... which might date the bottles. It does not seem that the bottles have lost any volume to evaporation. Any thought on what I have here? I have a pic of the two bottles, but I am new here and have no idea how to include in this message.

This weekend my oldest son texted me a picture of a double shot of bourbon sitting on a bartop and told me that I need to get ahold of a bottle of Elmer T Lee. Unfortunately, the internet tells me I will need to drive 300 miles to do so.
