Also, back in the day, I recall going to a place where there was a big picture window behind the bar -- at night they would hang something (bread?) on a clothesline and turn on a spotlight and you could watch the deer come to eat while you sat at the bar 10 feet away. |
Too many old fashioneds on Friday.

My take on the John Daly...
18oz. highball glass Two large, round craft ice cubes 2-4 oz. vodka 10-12 oz. Arizona Arnold Palmer (we use the Lite to save on calories, but the Diet version tastes too artificial) 1-2 oz. mango nectar Garnish with mint Adjust all to taste if necessary |
Tried my first Last Word ( harr harr 😜 ) — my word, what a great cocktail! Wish I knew this existed sooner.

A nice refreshing Gin & Tonic made with Citadelle Gin and Fever Tree Cucumber Tonic Water and of course a generous slice of lime. Really hit the spot being so hot and sticky after polo practice. It was literally the first thing I did when I got home even before taking off my boots.

My cocktail was an Old Fashioned on UA made from the Hail M Travel Kit and a glass with 2 minis of Buffalo Trace, since they hadn't catered the pre-made ones. |

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about bourbon to tell if this is a good one or not. The old fashioned I made was good but I've also tried it straight and I'm not sure I'll ever have a palate for bourbon. Seemed thin and hot but I feel that way about all bourbons I've tried.

A Rye Mule made with High West Double Rye and Fever Tree Ginger Beer so it was nice and spicy like i like it. First thing I did after coming back from polo scrimmage, really hit the spot as its a hot and humid morning here.

People call these bourbons as being a great value. Bottled-in-Bond is about $23 for a 1L bottle; about $18 for the Small Batch. |
We will be dining next week at Guesthouse Tavern in West Des Moines to celebrate BamaVol Jr #2’s birthday. One of the drinks on their menu is a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. Apparently not an old fashioned like I’ve had before. “Lighter and brighter”. I will be trying one.

Old Fashioneds are THE predominant cocktail in Wisconsin, usually made with Brandy (Wisconsinites drink a staggering % of the brandy compared to the rest of the US). Elsewhere most Old Fashioneds are made with bourbon (we prefer rye if going the bourbon route).

In Wisconsin (at least the parts I know), every small town has at least a couple bars/restaurants that are full of people eating fried walleye and drinking brandy old fashioneds on Friday nights. Often with a salad bar, although I'm not sure how prevalent those are post-COVID. 25 minutes south of the border and I don't see that here, I wonder if the restaurant owner is a WI transplant?
Were you given the option of sweet or sour for your drink? No choice on the drink. I don’t know much about the restaurant. It’s called the Guesthouse. As predicted, there were many deer heads on the wall. They treated us well. The manager brought a free appetizer. The server comped one of our drinks for my son’s birthday. A couple drinks came with pull tab lottery tickets and we won a couple free drinks as well. Drink description below. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f347618a2.png |

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e413d2702.jpg Thus far it the only vodka I find worth drinking. In fact, I quite enjoy it. It is delicious. And yeah I had to copy/paste that name! The bartender taught me how to say it at least. "Zuh-brov-kah" 😁 |

Enjoyed some caipirinhas at Fogo de Chao with now-21-year-old Miss Swede over the weekend.
