Best steak tartare?

I'd like to ask you where you had your best steak tartare?

Especially I'd like to have some recommendations for Orlando, FL.

Thanks in advance!

Japan is the only place to eat steak tartare. The Kobe beef is perfect for it. However it is expensive (from USD 200 to USD 500 depending on the restaurant). In the US I would only make it at home and not trust any restaurant to get this right, IMHO. Actually a good carpaccio is often more satisfying and has more of the "essence of beef" flavour, but that is equally hard to find. This kind of food is simply not available in Orlando, the closest would be the restaurant at The Atlantic in FLL (which is ex-NYC).

Ahem, while Japan is definately a top destination for beef, there is a reason why Japanese travellers flock to Korea to eat yakiniku. :)

My best experience with this dish dad taught me to love has been in the SW agricultural heartland of Korea. There is a somewhat hard to find but renowned beef specialist in Damyang just outside of Gwangju that serves amazing Kobe style meat.

And their preferred starter is an equally amazing steak tartare adjusted to the Korean love of spiciness. I got the impression they only serve this on slaughter days to ensure absolute freshness. Add a glass or two of soju and the typical Korean side dishes and life is bliss ( until the bill comes ).

Jeanty @ Jacks on Sacramento Street in San Francisco does a very respectable beef tartare IMHO.

One to stay away from also IMHO is at a cafe called Dome on the north side of Rue St. Antoine, near St. Paul Metro stop, in the Marais in Paris. Similar to one of the posters above, I spent half of a 3 day long weekend from San Francisco to Paris on or within spitting distance of a loo a couple of years ago.

A place in NY called Cafe Un, Deaux, Trios (which I am sure I spelled wrong) is quite good. I had a wonderful steak tartare in Montpellier 2 weeks ago at a place called Le Vieux Four. Actually a very nice restaurant all around. Not as good as Le Jardin du Sens in the same town, but about 1/8 the price. Also, Im thinking Orlando - steak tartare, nah.

Tavern au Passage, Brussels does a pretty mean Steak Tartare.

JOUY31 Oct 24, 2006 10:09 am

Thanks, we were already considering doing a day trip to Tampa.

best steak tartare?

Great steak tartare in Bharni's, a classic shophouse ground floor on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok, named after the late owner's daughter. Owner worked as chef in France before returning and starting his own shophouse restaurant and girl's dormitory! Always high quality meals for ridiculously low prices. And for dessert, varieties of ice cream like corn and durian! Plus great apple pie and banana fritters!

Bern's is one of the best classic old-style steak houses in the US, but I really didn't find their steak tartare to be up to standard at all (this was about 10 years ago, but the place has been unchanged for the past 50 years). They also have surprisingly good oysters and deserts (I guess that is part of the classic steak house style).

Whenever I think of steak Tartare I think of the time my dad, making a booking for the next day, walked into a restaurant and said "I want steak Tartare" and was told "no problem". When he walked outside he noticed that he'd been in the wrong restaurant, he went back into the Indian restaurant and quickly cancelled....

My wife ordered the Cavier & Steak Tartare at Petrossian in NYC this weekend, I stole a few bites. An over the top rendition - wonderful steak tartare with a layer of cavier on top. Absolutely fabulous.

We like steak tartare & order it often, even make it at home. This was among the best anywhere we've tasted.

Cheers,
Jeff

I had forgotten about Petrossian, one of the better restaurants in Manhattan. They do have fabulous food, and your post caused me to look up their menu ... caviar & steak tartare as an appetizer for a very reasonable USD 22! And Petrossian uses Kobe beef (albeit from Oregon -- but it is excellent stuff, in some ways better than the original). The caviar is probably US farm raised (so ecologically sound). A class act.

" wonderful steak tartare with a layer of cavier on top. "

Has been served this way at The Student Prince & Fort Restaurant in Springfield MA since 1965, and Rudi Rupprecht Scherff, the owner, calls it
" Schlemmerschnitte "
since it is served/spread 'Canape' Style on Pumpernickel Bread.

mosburger Nov 8, 2006 7:16 pm

A much more downmarket version is the German mettbroetchen:

Spread 400 grams of ground pork on eight roll halves

Add one whole chopped onion and press gently into the pork mett

And salt, pepper and chives according to taste

Enjoy with a German beer of choice or favourite dry Riesling.

This snack is usually widely available in pubs in Germany along with Frikadelle and Bockwurst even if other food is not served.

If you are interested, let me know if you will be in SYD, if you'd like to try steak tartare. This will give me an excuse to try out a few places first! ;)

The best I've had is at Red Square in Las Vegas. Prepared table-side.

No. I would not consider myself a connoisseur of steak tartare, but I have had it in plenty of upscale places where it was not prepared table-side. Have you not?

coplatsat Jul 28, 2007 11:34 am

Capital Grill has it and it is a franchise. It is good.

I think I have seen it on the menu at the Prime in Vegas. Did not have it.

YULbigfoot Jul 28, 2007 2:02 pm

Montreal is a great place for finding good tartare:
- Julien at Carre Philips
- Brasserie Holder on McGill
- Rosalie on De la Montagne
and many others

And make sure you ask for "Bien relevé" meaning "spicier" (ie extra ground pepper and/or mustard)

I'll usually stay away from places that have not been recommended by more then 3-4 people...

BiziBB Jul 28, 2007 10:10 pm

I've wanted to visit since seeing The Score, with Bob De Niro and Ed Norton.

Perhaps as part of a RTW fare on the return from Ireland. Any comment on that?

Are there a lot of dining options at reasonable prices from community/local French & other locals-cuisine restaurants?

Montreal is probably one of the best places to eat in North America. You cant find anything from top end restaurants to local eateries serving up food from a multitude of incluences (mainly French and Italian but you'll find incredible sushi, Indian, Thai, Mediterranean and many, many others). If you go outside the main tourist areas you'll find very resonable prices for incredible food...

For specific suggestions, PM me

I'll definitely ask for steak tartare restaurants if I'm able to get to New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Tahiti or the tiny islands of Wallis and Futuna

A fascinating place...

the only commercial flights that go to Wallis are operated by the New Caledonia based Aircalin. There is an Aircalin office in Mata-Utu on Wallis. There are no commercial boat operators.

Good steak tartare served at the Hotel Sullberg in Blankenese near Hamburg with great views high up over the banks of Elbe river. Well worth seeking out if you're in that area visiting Airbus Deutschland.

dukeman Jul 30, 2007 8:13 am

Just had a great tartare at StripSteak at Mandalay Bay in Vegas on Saturday night.
