What's your (food) weakness?

There are are quite a few foods that I like. There are some that I love. There are a couple I would have trouble passing up even if they were offered to me right after I finished a full meal.

My #1: Beets

iapetus Aug 24, 2006 12:24 pm

Beets???

Of the top of my head, I'd have to say that:

My #1: crawdads (a.k.a. crawfish)

I recall returning to Houston, Texas, several years ago to visit friends and going with them to this soul food/Cajun restaurant. Stuffed myself silly on crawfish etoufee. Since I'd left my friends had gotten to know the owners pretty well. So, no one was particularly surprised when the owners offered us a ~3-lb. tray full of more crawfish (it was near closing time and they weren't going to be able to sell them). Though no one else could bring themselves to eat anymore, one of my friends and I just looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and dug in!

We finished the tray of crawfish.

My moms Apricot Cobbler... :p warm with vanilla ice cream...

CDG1 Aug 24, 2006 1:34 pm

Lobster Thermidor a la Singapore Airlines. :p ^

xtroverted Aug 24, 2006 10:33 pm

my #1 : salmon, of any kind.

blueskeyes Aug 24, 2006 10:37 pm

Beets are good!

If they are served with great bread, olives, and skordalia.

I adore greek food!

My weakness is rare prime beef and good red wine.

mosburger Aug 24, 2006 10:38 pm

Proper Russian food, from a summertime okroshka to buttery caviar blinnis.

WonderDude Aug 24, 2006 10:42 pm

BBQ pork ribs and buffalo wings.

obscure2k Aug 24, 2006 10:52 pm

Fresh white Italian Truffles in late fall. I'll eat them shaved over pasta, eggs, potatoes, risotto. Truly, this decadent seasonal food is my weakness. Oh, and don't ever tell me that this taste can be replicated in truffle butter or truffle oil.

brianbCID Aug 24, 2006 11:27 pm

A good quality beef tenderloin is hard to resist for me.

That's a YMMV if I've ever seen one ;)

What I can't resist: foie gras, a good gruyere, or freshly baked baguette (all together, and you'd have me on my knees).

Points Scrounger Aug 24, 2006 11:44 pm

Fresh durian! ^ ^ ^

Beets??? :td: :td:

There's a salad bar in the HQ cafeteria. It always features a bowl of cold, fresh beet chunks. They're incredibly sweet and succulent I've been known to add a second salad bowl to my tray and empty the salad bar bowl into mine. I like them plain, harvard, in borscht with sour cream, I love them pickled with little onions. The tops are my favorite green. I ate beets right out of the can at lunch yesterday.

Beet recipes welcomed. And, yes, I know I'm odd. But if you have to crave a food, isn't this better than craving a big raw steak or half a pineapple upsidedown cake every day?

Carne Adovada served on pappas with a fried egg on top!

one of my favorites freshly baked bread at home with french butter (President is probably the best you can get in the US supermarkets). You could add a piece of dark chocolate on top.
I am drooling......

A dinner to die for (and which would probably kill me)....

2 Martinis (Up) made with Bombay Gin and Noilly Pratt (Lemon Twist, no olive)

Scots Smoked Salmon and a modest Caviar, whipped Cream Cheese, finely chopped Green Onion and Capers, served with warm crisp Toast Rounds and thinly sliced Pumpernickel

2 dozen oysters, raw, served with Lemon and Crystal Hot Sauce

Half a ripe Haas Avocado stuffed with small Gulf Shrimp & Sauce Remolaude

Dish of Crab Imperial (made with Blue Crab)

A few tiny stalks of Asparagus, al dente w/a bit of butter and lemon

The above served with a modest White Burgundy and one of the dry Rose of Provence

Beefsteak "Florentine", Rare

Fresh Spinach, sauteed in olive oil and garlic for less than a minute

Fresh pasta (linguine/fettucine) served with a little crisped pancetta, Italian truffles and fresh grated Parmegiano

A clear not-overbearing Pinot Noir and a Barbaresco for comparison

The served course should be accompanied by a choice of a fresh Baguette, a San Francisco-style Sourdough Round anda mixed grain Peasant Boulle.

Half a ripe peach topped with a little Zabaglione, served with a crisp Ginger Wafer.

Dark Roast Coffee

Variety of ripe cheeses, including my favorite Gorgonzola, some native "Cherokee" Pecans and a Bosc Pear

Armagnac, a substantial clear Grappa (or comparble l'eau), Calvados or a well traveled Madeira.....

Skip the Port....
....and have them carry me directly to the ambulance!

silverthief2 Aug 25, 2006 2:13 pm

Green chile smothered chicharron burritos! Every time I go back home.

Nachtswerg probably knows what I'm talking about.

1. Anything that combines rich European dark chocolate with fresh raspberries
2. Diced Heirloom tomato with a bit of onion, garlic and salt atop bruchetta
3. Mango salsa
4. Mozzerella di bufala, especially in a tricolore salad of fresh avocado, sliced flavorful tomatoes drizzlied with a big of fig balsamic vinegar or in a panini
5. Berries -- raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries
6. Mango
7. Real Greek yogurt (Trader Joe's has some pretty good approximations), sometimes with a bit of honey but usually just on its own or with some fresh fruit
8. Mom's chocolate chip cookies -- sounds corny, but they are SO good
9. Chocolate-covered cherries
10. Fresh sweet corn on the cob

Edited to add:
11. Spinach salad with toasted pecans and sliced strawberries
12. Grappa, grappa, grappa!

Agreed. But I'll say if I had to choose the salmon, I'd go raw as in nigiri.

guy999 Aug 26, 2006 3:25 pm

perfectly grilled filet, rare to medium rare.

uswest33 Aug 26, 2006 3:53 pm

In-N-Out Burgers! ^

meducate Aug 26, 2006 7:10 pm

The the OP, I happen to love beets too! ^

For me, however, my weakness these days is french toast, belgian waffles, pancakes and crepes.

I have been low carb dieting for over 4 years, so the rare occasions that I indulge in carbs, it is at a breakfast buffet! :D ^

xanthuos Aug 26, 2006 7:20 pm

I've decided I need to lose some pounds, so thinking of all the foods I normally can't resist is definitely added torture!

New York pizza...when I moved out of NY when I was 12, I'd literally have pizza for at least 1 of my 3 meals per day when I'd go home to visit.

Buffalo-style chicken (whether wings, tenders, etc)...I love a good Buffalo sauce

Steak...ahh, who am I to refuse a good slab of beef prepared perfectly to my liking...

The rest are just dishes that my mother makes that I dig into any chance I can (on the twice-or-so-a-year occasion that I get her home cooking when I visit)...
Lemon chicken piccata!!! Meatloaf, Greek-style fish, chicken & sundried tomatoes and pasta, chicken roll-ups, beef stroganoff, shrimp scampi, stuffed cabbage...the list goes on

obscure2k Aug 26, 2006 7:23 pm

In an earlier post I mentioned my weakness for fresh white Italian Truffles (available in the fall).
I have another weakness: Mallomars
Sadly, they too are seasonal-- unavailable from May-September.

Diaphanous Aug 26, 2006 8:12 pm

Pineapple, white peaches, and cherries right now :)

Nymph Aug 26, 2006 8:15 pm

Admitted chocoholic here.

The one food that makes me weak in the knees is warm homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Mmmmmm!

ALARISstl Aug 26, 2006 8:23 pm

Pizza

1.NY style Pizza (Pep, Saus, Xtra cheese) with the grease running down my hand and arm.

2. Auth. Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

ElmhurstNick Aug 26, 2006 8:57 pm

Sausage. Link, patty, crumbled. Breakfast, Italian, fine-ground Polish, chorizo, bratwurst, thuringer, Hot dogs, currywurst from a street cart in Vienna, Greek, Lithuanian, BBQ hot link, Old Wisconsin stick, whatever.

cblaisd Aug 26, 2006 9:10 pm

ContinentalFan Aug 26, 2006 10:19 pm

A nice filet mignon with blue cheese, mixed greens and fries.

dankyone Aug 27, 2006 11:16 am

Far and away, foie gras.

JBlaine Aug 27, 2006 11:19 am

Forgot in the earlier post:

1. Pretty much any Thai food, especially Mango + veggies, Tom Yum Kai soup, and pad thai
2. Creme brulee ... so rich, so good!

venice4504 Aug 27, 2006 11:27 am

Duck (prepared pretty much any way)
Blue Cheese
Brioche
baguette with procuitto and brie
Champagne

hairpeace Aug 27, 2006 11:30 am

Anything with Nutella. :p

It's recently been made illegal in Chicago, believe it or not, and is slated to be made illegal in several other U.S. cities soon, if memory serves.

Here's my jones: Chinese delivery! From a restaurant named "Szechuan Anything" or "Hunan Anything". Call 'em up and 5 minutes later the doorbell rings. They must cook it on the bicycle on the way over!

bitburgr Aug 27, 2006 12:20 pm

Pulled pork sandwich. And chocolate for dessert.

Chirimoya -- near where it is grown. It is a fruit that tastes like a magnificent custard. On a trip to Peru once, I let my hosts know that chirimoya was a favorite and I ended up with it for breakfast, lunch and dinner -- plain and cooked in desserts. It was terrific. I once bought some at Dean & DeLuca's in NY and they were a pale imitation of the real thing. I had some in San Miguel de Allende in December and again they were wonderful. So, I conclude you need to buy them as local produce.

Fresh figs.

Tarte Tatin at a really good French restaurant.
