I went to 7 Farmers Markets in Chicago on saturday.

They are smaller and more limited but they had c=some great produce and great flowers.

One company was at 3 markets with honey and bread.

Great to see the markets in a big city.

The Monterey Market is great!! I remember the fresh fruit! :)

And during the summer months, I remember some of the most amazing organic heirloom tomatoes. I think the Monterey market is on Tuesdays.

Do you still find tomatoes like that?

I love them however I dont see that many quality tomatoes anymore.

Sure do! late June to early September seem to be the best times to find these tomatoes, but usually at the smaller markets.

And if you're truly a fan, I've heard good things about various heirloom tomato festivals (although they can be a bit pricey ... but volunteers usually work a four hour shift and then receive a free pass for the rest of the day / other days )

Oh, how I could go on and on about the merits of heirloom tomatoes. But probably beyond the scope of Flyertalk! :)

Concur with Hilo, Santa Monica (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday), Portland State, Olympia, Irvine.

Locally we like the quaint Thursday market at Hanapepe, although for variety the Wednesday Kapaa market is far better.

In Tassie, the world-famous Salamanca market is huge, so varied and fabulous.

Larry's Produce. Located in the middle of no where in Fairfield, CA. Surrounded by vineyards, olive tree orchards and of course farms. Has practically everything including organic produces. Real inexpensive. For example, 6 ears of corns (large and juicy) for $1. It opens only 6 months a year (July - Dec).

I can hardly wait until next time I'm on the big island. Seems like everyone recommends the Hilo market!

Perth, Scotland - was one of the first in the UK. It's the second Saturday in the month, and since Perth is in the heart of good meat country, there is usually some fantastic beef, lamb and pork to be had, as well as things like venison and ostrich. My personal favourites is the beef from Highland cows, but of course they only use the ugly ones, not the cute ones ;)

There is also good seafood, as one of the west coast companies is a regular vendor, but one has to get to his stall early.

The one is York (1st Saturday in the month) is much more vegetable driven, although there is usually some good pork - but not nearly so good or diverse as Perth.

Madison's market definitely deserves a mention. Haven't been in a few years, but it's a classic.
