What's your favorite restaurant in Strasbourg (FR)?

I just thought it could be fun to start this thread...

One of my favorites is the Tęte de Lard. Excellent flammeküche and a great jarret.

fredsxb Feb 10, 2006 4:15 am

My favorite at the time is the "R" (fusion cuisine in a very stylish restaurant).
I also like "Mooze": japanese food
"Les 3 chevaliers": they serve great cordons bleus
Italian food: La Grappa, La Trattoria

We ended up eating at the extremes of the restaurant levels while we were in Strasbourg. We ate at some small "Ma/Grandma in the Kitchen" Turkish places and then at Au Crocodile and Buerehiesel, both at the time, Michelin 3 star restaurants.

I am going to look at this places when I am next to Strasbourg ... however, I could not find even one in any of the guides.

I tried hard - but I didn't have much luck in Strasbourg with the food during several visits:

-L'Arsenal was good, but I think it's closed now as is L'Abre vie or so nearby.
-Au Crocodile was not very good & expensive.
-One very small Chinese Rest. in the Old Town (with an old fashioned 'heater' in the middle of the room) was good, couldn't find it again.
-Four or five other restaurants we tried ... not very good.
-One restaurant in La Wantzenau (direct on the river) was very good.

I guess, I need some help ... :( I might be back in May this year for a day or so.

Try some of the small Turkish Mom & Pop joints -- there were quite a few near the Regent Hotel Petit France.

Perhaps you will have to go out to Illhausern to Auberge de l'Ill...... ;)

How do you think it managed 3 stars in Michelin then? Just curious ...

Au Crocodile did drop from 3 to 2 Michelin stars. While we enjoyed our meal, it was not at the same level as Taillevent, Le Cinq, or Gagnaire......

Most of them opened very recently. That is probably why you didn't find them in any of the guides.
I may also add "Pont des Vosges", l' "Atable 77", "Fleur de sel".

These restaurants (along with the ones I mentioned earlier) do not have any Michelin stars but they are very good in my opinion.

Feel free to contact me next time you come to SXB ;-)

I didn't personally love Taillevant - found them arrogant. However, food was quite good. Pierre Gagnaire is probably the best meal I have ever had, along with Troigros.

Tried Buerhiesel - very good, but not astounding. Not my favorite Michelin 3 starred place.

Also, anybody have any idea why Lameloise lost its third star? It was excellent last time I was there.

Edited to add: L'Arnsbourg, near Strasbourg is one of the best meals I have ever had. Kind of like Gagnaire but more adventurous. They do lots of the little "taste" things too.

There is a great Thai place on the rue Kageneck, not too far from the train station, called Baan Thai.

Actually, I don't know - I am not a food critic, I just like good food .. it's just what I think about the food I had there (when it still was a 3-star).
I have had better food .. and I question the (3) 2-stars for Au Crocodile.
Don't get me wrong, I wish Emile Jung, the chef, all the best and plenty of stars .... Au Crocodile is just not for me (next time I am in Strasbourg)

2006:
Michelin: **
Gault Millau: 16 / HH
Feinschmecker: ooooo
Pudlo: OOO
Bottin: ****

fredsxb:

Thanks - I'll keep this in mind...

BTW, what happened with "L'Arsenal". The food was good, long waitings ...
This was the restaurant with paintings from the famous (funny) painter from Strasbourg, Tomi Ungerer.

fredsxb Feb 25, 2006 5:07 pm

Actually, stay away from "R", things have changed there... 24 euros for a Grey Goose Martini which I think is an outrageous price in a city like Strasbourg (compared for instance to US$ 14 at the Delano in Miami)... And I'm not mentioning (actually I am) the attempt not to accept Amex cards:

- Them: "Actually we don't accept Amex cards anymore".
- Me: "I don't have any other credit card".
- Them: "Well we actually accept Amex cards".

A big disappointment to me!

is it a just me, or is this a growing phenomen in france over the past few years? it seems many restaurants no longer take Amex, despite Amex stickers posted in the front window. i've even received the bill inside an Amex folio and subsequently had the restaurant refuse my Amex card, or make up some bogus excuse that the "Amex machine is broken, but the Visa/MC machine works."
