Fat Burger or In-and-Out Burger?

I'm going to vegas but my wife will only let me eat fastfood once during our trip. Which is better Fatburger or In-and-Out Burger?

PR

I live on the east-coast so these places are new to me.

jenn_1K Jan 18, 2006 4:23 pm

I live in CA so I have access to In and Out, but even if I didn't (I don't go very often) I say go to Fatburger. My BF who is far more sophisticated about these places, would say Fatburger as well.

Now if I could just convince him that he can only go once per trip to Vegas I'd be ecstatic.

Mongrel Jan 18, 2006 4:35 pm

No WAY!

In-N-Out Burger is hands DOWN the best fast food hamburger place.

It's not even a contest.

obscure2k Jan 18, 2006 4:51 pm

Fatburger makes a terrific turkey burger. I would say Fatburger for the turkey burger, In-n-out for the beefburger. I prefer the turkey burger to the beef burger. Also, Fatburger will charbroil for you, upon request, so not as much fat and grease.

Since not really a Las Vegas specific question, and for the sake of those searching this topic in the future, am moving to Dining Buzz

never been impressed with Fatburger. In-n-out is the one to go. Basically a fresh burger with lettuce, tomato and thousand island dressing on a toasted bun. Options include cheese and a full slice of raw onion. Yum. You can also get grilled onions. If you like cheese on your burger then get the Double-Double, double meat and cheese with the fixings. ^

brentley Jan 18, 2006 5:45 pm

Fatburger will give you more options for your burger, but in and out is a treat that is unequaled. In fact since it is now 4:45 PM in CA I will be getting in and out for dinner tonight (my kitchen is being remodeled) and will lvoe every minute of it.

If you do go to in and out you might want to try the fries well done (where they really really get the fries crispy) if you like them crispy.

I still feel that mcdonalds makes teh best french fries (must be the beef tallow) but In and out makes the best burger.

The best fast food ad I have seen recently is the carl's jr shake ad with the guy and cow.

In-N-Out's "Secret Menu" allows for a lot more variety, but, yes, not as much as other burger joints.

Here are some examples from the Secret Menu:

2x4: Two meat patties and four slices of cheese. (Note: You can get any combination you want, even as enormous as 20x20. Order is layers of meat, then layers of cheese.)
3 by Meat: Three meat patties without cheese.
Animal Style: The meat is fried with mustard served on a bun with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, extra spread and grilled onions.
Animal Style Fries: Fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions, and optional pickles.
Double Meat: Double Double without cheese.
Flying Dutchman: Two meat patties, two slices of melted cheese and that's it. No bun, no lettuce, nothing.
Fries "Light": Almost raw fries.
Fries "Well-Done": Extra crispy fries.
Grilled Cheese: No meat, just two slices of melted cheese, tomato, lettuce and spread on a bun.
Neapolitan Shake: All three shake flavors (strawberry, vanilla and chocolate) combined in one shake.
Choco-Vanilla Swirl Shake: A chocolate and vanilla shake in which the two flavors are swirled into one another.
Protein Style: Instead of a bun, the burger is wrapped in lettuce (Atkins approved). And yes, you can get a Grilled Cheese Protein Style!
Veggie Burger: A burger without the meat and cheese.

Just a few of the options that aren't up on the basic menu.

You can get all of the above at Fatburger, plus chili. Also, Fatburger (at least in West L.A.) has really good, fresh lemonade. A group of firemen eating there alerted me to the lemonade.

I'd go to in and out burger. I live on the east coast and can never get enough when I'm out west.

Example of In-N-Out Burger

Here's one example of what you can get at In-N-Out:

Here's the Fatburger menu

IceTrojan Jan 18, 2006 6:53 pm

I gotta say, I love both, but I'd say i would eat In n Out first, then switch to Fatburger for variety's sake :D

There's a Fatburger right on the Strip, and the In n Out is across the freeway... if you're asking is it worth the trip, then the answer is YES.

NYCAA Jan 18, 2006 6:57 pm

IMHO it's not even a contest. In-n-Out is the only choice. It's my first stop everytime in Las Vegas or LAX

cblaisd Jan 18, 2006 7:22 pm

What the previous poster said! ^ ^

lili Jan 18, 2006 7:27 pm

Sorry O2K, In and Out, hands down. They have fresh lemonade also.

Personally don't like Fatburger fries, and In and Out has WONDERFUL fries. Reading above that you can have the burger grilled may improve it.

We have a Fatburger 1 block from the office and our every-single-day take-out lunch group has only gotten food from there once. No requests for a repeat. It's not even on the long version of our rotation list (And KFC is, if that gives you a clue!) Advantage of Fatburger is no line ^ . (Also no drive-through :td: , at least at our local one.)

But I must admit we have George Burger a local 2-store place that is almost as good as In and Out, so we choose that over Fatburger.

Unfortunately, the city turned down an In and Out location years ago because In and Out wanted a sign visible from the freeway. Duh. (Apparently only auto dealers are allowed to do that  )

So OP, skip the midnight buffet and head for In and Out. Then Fatburger. Then In and Out. It may be the best food in Vegas. Think of the money you'll save for gambling or buying your wife tokens of appreciation.

mtimmer Jan 18, 2006 7:36 pm

Fatburger was where I went when I was in college. Now that I'm an adult, it's In-and-Out all the way. The best wedding reception I ever went to was a rather formal one for 100+ people and it was actually catered by In-and-Out.

In 'n' Out.
Even the Dude would abide.

In-n-out

DJZ Jan 18, 2006 11:20 pm

Ever hear the slogan "Fatburger, fatburger, that what a hamburger's all about?" didn't think so.
In-n-out all the way

In-n-Out

Double Double Animal Style

lili Jan 19, 2006 1:04 am

It's midnight here and nearest In and Out is about 45 minutes away......
ah, could be three time zones away, I guess.

Gives new meaning to the phrase going to bed hungry.

I have to admit that I've never eaten at fatburger, but let me tell you just one thing:

 Don't miss out on In-N-Out!

(sneak away from wife if needed)

Seriously, take your wife along on the first day of your trip. If she's never tasted In-N-Out before, she might want to eat there again! :D

That's the ticket. Blows F-burger away. Though I can't stand In n Out fries.

mrnum Jan 20, 2006 3:08 am

Actually I love BOTH!

In & Out has great double double animal style or Fatburger King size with eggs and cheese!!! But I have to vote for Fat fries. Even though In & Out fries were made of fresh potato, but yuck! (the burger is good though ;) )

mjm Jan 20, 2006 3:54 am

Go whole hog and get:

3x3 Animal Style

Crispy Fries animal style

A must.

KebaNYC Jan 20, 2006 4:21 am

I couldn't agree more!

This is always the sequence of my trips to the west coast.

1. Arrive at airport
2. get rental car (and ask where the nearest location is)
3. proceed to the nearest in-and-out

My only advice is to get a double-double even if you think that you only want a single burger. It is my opinion that the balance of the ingredients is much better than a regular cheese burger and will give you the full In and Out experience. I would also say that your first experience should be the regular Double-Double. When you sneak away from your wife later in the trip to go back you can get Animal style or another variation. :)

I was disappointed that I was staying at the SF Sheraton Fishermans' Wharf last week, until I found that there was an In-N-Out about three blocks away on foot (over by where the F muni ends). I must admit that I don't like Animal style, but my regular 3x3 was really what I needed after a stressful day.

ButIsItArt Jan 22, 2006 2:32 pm

ButIsItArt's 9 steps for a happy Westbound transcon

1. Three glasses of wine in flight.
2. Nice chat with purser
3. Arrive at SFO
4. Take AirTrain to rental car counter, and check out all the *A 744's at G-gates along the way. Look out especially for N196UA
5. Get rental car
6. Proceed to In-N-Out
7. Order favorite meal option, and a chocolate shake
8. Eat fries in car while driving to destination (Fries need to be eaten immediately, otherwise they become quite unsavory)
9. :)

2lazytothinkofname Jan 22, 2006 2:55 pm

Tough wife dude.
In-N-Out, no debate.

Sweet Willie Jan 22, 2006 6:07 pm

Neither !! :td:

If one does a little research, there are far far better burgers in most places to be had than either of these places. ^

I have to assume that there is some off the strip bar/joint that does a much better burger as I have found this to be true in most areas I’ve traveled to.

In 'N Out

tk77 Jan 24, 2006 3:28 pm

In-N-Out. No contest when comparing the two although Fatburger is still good.

OC 1K Jan 24, 2006 6:09 pm

No Contest

In-And-Out all the way. One of the few local So Cal icon brands.

If your coming from the east to Vegas or So Cal you've gotta have an In & Out burger, fries & shake. After that, you'll never look at fast food the same way again

REC1111 Jan 24, 2006 6:41 pm

In-and-Out's burgers are good but their french fries are terrible. It's like they started with the Belgian two step process but forgot the second high heat frying step to crisp up the outsides. They taste and feel like they've been poached, not fried, in oil.

True, but the point here is to experience something with a nationwide rep. And I don't think Tommy's has a Vegas location.

Best non-chain bets in any town, IMHO, are almost any sports bar or if in a city, some of the trendiest hotels and restaurants have fantastic burgers, assuming you don't mind spending $15-18 for lunch, since they usually refuse to serve them at dinner.

Back to the OP: In-N-Out rulz. Hope you're not disappointed after this buildup. I mean, it's just a burger.

drruff Jan 24, 2006 7:30 pm

You can't get a double king, chili-cheese, egg, bacon burger @ in/out!
If you can only live once, LIVE LARGE! :D

redbeard911 Jan 24, 2006 7:36 pm

In-N-Out. ^ In an interesting bit of trivia, In-N-Out and McDonald's started within 2 years of each other.

San Diego is getting a Tommy's as well.

LOL! :D

Personally, In-N-Out gets my vote. I craved it all the time when I didn't live near one, however, now that I have one about 2 miles from where I live, I hardly go. Maybe it's the desire of wanting something you can't have.....who knows. ;)
