What internet links are there for list of restaurants in any given US city?

My family and I travel a lot, to a variety of different US cities. I am wondering if there are any links which can list the restaurants in any given city by cuisine type, and perhaps give some info on price range.

Some types of restaurants that I look for include family restaurants (often chains), salad bars, vegetarian restaurants, steak houses, Indian restaurants, Italian restaurants and/or pasta places, Mexican restuarants etc.

The city I was interested in looking up (as I may visit the city, as I have a relative who recently moved there from India) is Des Moines, Iowa. I do not see any options in the zagat link, for looking up restaurants in this city.

Every city of decent size has an 'alternative weekly' paper; these papers nearly all have web sites with listings of restaurants by category and/or area of town.

If I don't have any local friends who can suggest places, I Google "alternative weekly [insert city of interest here]".

Des Moines appears to be a bit on an exception (no stand-alone restaurant listing), but there is a list of the seven best and worst restaurants in the "Food Dude" section of the current edition; there is also an "Archives" section you have to search issue-by-issue that contains restaurant reviews.

A couple of suggestions:

www.citysearch.com

shows nearly a thousand eating places in and around Des Moines here:

http://desmoines.citysearch.com/sear...=sec&started=1

You can search this list by food type (see categories on left side of page: American, Asian, Bakeries, etc., etc.).

or

www.Google.com and enter the name of the city and "restaurants" as your search terms. This should work for virtually any city. Other websites such as "AOL City Guide," "VirtualTourist," "IgoUgo," will be in the results.

I would suggest looking in the online edition of the city's local newspaper. Most seem to prominently feature a dining guide that tries to address the questions and selection criteria you have. For example, here in Tampa, the Tampa Tribune has www.tbo.com/entertainment/dining/ .

Similarly, the Chicago Tribune has www.Metromix.com .

menupages.com has menus for pretty much every restaurant, deli, etc in New York.

for upscale yes I would agree and also only for certain areas NYC being an obvious, Zagat is very weak sometimes. Zagat for me is usually the "safe" bet in terms of not being disappointed but rarely am I knocked off my feet, so I prefer to take some chances.

For off the beaten path there are usually websites that pertain to particular cities, for Chicago, there is http://www.lthforum.com

A nation wide decent off the beaten path which is usually good nation wide is http://www.chowhound.com

Another upscale, well known restaurant site is http://www.egullet.com

I am also very much of the belief that all FT'ers have at least one or two places that they like very much and go to on a regular basis, now if only each FT'er would post their one or two favorite spots, the dining buzz forum would be a really really great forum.

Note that in post #3, the OP explained that he/she was particularly interested in restaurants in Des Moines, IA. Some of the suggestions that were made in reply really don't cover places like Des Moines at all.

That is why I suggested www.citysearch.com and www.Google.com, for restaurant lists covering a broad range of locales. (Google would cover any place on earth, potentially.) I didn't see the OP asking specifically for ratings or reviews, either. Just lists, with type of food, price range. ;)

One or two favorite eating places in Des Moines, IA? Sorry, I've never even been there. :D

Oh, you mean post my favorite spots anywhere? Well, the thing is, such information is much more useful if it is ORGANIZED in some way, and easily findable. One obvious way of organizing it is geographically. So, a lot of restaurant information is going to be found in the destination forums, such as London, New York City, Paris, San Francisco, etc. Some of it will be in the Reviews forum. Some of it will be in the idine/Rewards Network forum. Some of it will be in this forum. And some of it will be in the Hotels forums. In other words, it is scattered all over FlyerTalk. Maybe someone could find a way to better organize it, or at least, put together and maintain a links sticky pointing to various places with this info?

don't get me started :( , tried to fight for organization for far too long. Too many FT'ers not doing a search, lazy just not taking the time mixed with moderators who don't care where things are posted, etc etc etc.

It has been awhile since I've done one of my "post a restaurant and be entered into a SWU giveaway" contests but your post reminds me of why I don't bother anymore.
