Dinner Suggestions for Munich and Salzburg?

My wife and I are making a quick January trip. We like authentic restaurants with some genuine terroir and very good food, more than scene places.

We are equally happy in fancy rooms and local pub type places, but love great meals based on the local specialties.

I highly recommend Tantris in München:

I haven't had dinner in Salzburg during to festival performance times, but a good standby is the Cafe Sacher in the hotel of the same name.

Tantris is very good...very expensive!

Salzburg:
Restaurant "GOLDENER HIRSCH" at hotel GOLDENER HIRSCH. Very nice Austrian food, not too expensive.

Restaurant Brandstaetter. Very good food, also Austrian...

Agreed! Agreed! Agreed!
They also have a famous dessert that you have to order with your appetizer in order for it to be cooked to order for you. I forget what the dessert was... my brother-in-law had it.

any good casual dining recs for Munich?

I'll be visiting soon with a friend, and Tantris looks just like his kind of thing from the website, but I'd also love to hear suggestions for some good but less pricey places.

In Muenchen I went with my American guests to:
-Nuernberger Bratwurst Gloeckle, next to Marienkirche
-To a Biergarten, Chinesischer Turm, Grosshesselohe or any other,
-Kloster Andechs, Starkbier
-St. Emmerams Muehle, chicky-micky hang-out Biergarten. St. Emmeram 41
Stadtteil:Oberföhring
-Any good Weisswurst restaurant near Viktualien Markt.

If you like Thai food, there is a VERY GOOD Thai restaurant. It is one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been to. Reservations are definitly suggested as this place fills up quickly. It is very close to the Viktuallenmarkt. The address is Utzschneiderstrasse 6 Munich 80469.

For good informal food in Munich, I really like the pork products
purveyors ... Haxnbauer, for sure, also Nurnberger Bratwurstgloeckl
am Dom; but where else to get the full experience but at one of
the brewery restaurants - Augustinerkeller, Spaten Haus, and so
on.

Surprisingly, I had a couple excellent vegetarian meals there:
loved Prinz Myshkin, on Hackerstrasse and Cafe Ignaz near
Josephsplatz (great mushroom-flavored dishes but, as I recall,
be wary of some of the overly healthy tasting pastries).

Here's their website: http://www.augustinerkeller.de/english/index.html

We had a highly enjoyable dinner there the night we arrived in Munich. What was especially charming was that the waitress actually knew NO english.

The site is lovely. A real respite from the city.

Was it puffy & crusted souffle-like? That's called Salzburger Nockerl (& I love it too!)

In Munich, we love the Austernkeller for excellent seafood (lobster thermidor to die for!), Weisses Brauhaus, Spatenhaus, Zum Durner (sp?) & just hanging out at the Viktualienmarkt, having a weisswurst & beer & people-watching. My favorite place in Munich! Have fun in one of my favorite cities in the world!

Think so, but after a big dinner, lots of alcohol, well, I'm not entirely sure.
It was a fabulous dinner and one of the waiters was a dead ringer (DEAD RINGER!!!) for my brother. Kind of made me feel at home.

In Salzburg, I would heartily recommend the restaurant in the Hotel Stadtkrug. The food can best be described as "modern Austrian" and, on all of my visits has been excellent. Service is excellent but unobtrusive and the room is delightful. It's in the Altstadt of Salzburg (the opposite side of the Salzach to the Schloss and Cathedral). I have recommended this place to many people who have all confirmed that they enjoyed it immensely.

I just pulled their business card out and it appears that they also have a website at www.stadtkrug.at

Enjoy! Both Sazlburg and Munich are near the top of my list of cities in Munich.

In Salzburg...

There's also the Augustiner Braüstübl, overlooking the old city--It's been there for centuries. When I took my father to Salzburg last year, he really enjoyed the semi-drunken firefighters singing folk songs over their magnificent beer. It's set up kind of like a beer hall food court, with individual proprietors selling their own foods. Quite a lot of fun on the right night.

More information: http://www.augustinerbier.at/pages/estuebl/index.htm

You also get to enjoy the beer hall division of labor. Pay one woman, get a ticket, get a mug off the wall, wash it out, cool it down, take it to the Braümeister and get a properly poured Maß. mmm

If you want to have a pretty authentic Bavarian experience, try the restaurant of the Aying brewery, in the small village of Aying, about 30 mins from the center of Munich on the S-Bahn. It's a very nice setting with typical Bavarian decor, and the restaurant attached to the brewery serves very good regional food. It is not your regular brewery however; the place is definitely more upscale. Few tourists (although they also have a hotel). The walk from the train station in Aying to the restaurant is about 100 yds or so. Reservations are a good idea.

This place is just too cute for words. The hotel rooms are beautiful. Sounds like a destination.
Thanks chtiet,

During my last vist we had a "team building" exercise at the brewery. We had an after hours tour with plenty of great beer. We actually walked from the brewery into Aying and ate at a local place in one of the hotels. Very good food ^

Kloster Andechs is actually outside (south) of Munich, but it is a fun trip, especially on a nice day. Their beer is really excellent, brewed by the monks. ^
