Missed Brother's in Denver, but we ate at Caldonia's in Aurora, pretty good, and also Bubba's in Greeley (which had a nice BBQ BUFFET!) Bubba's also had locations in Wyoming, in Cody and Jackson, which we partook in.

Corky's in Nashville was pretty good also!

In the CLT airport the BBQ place in the main atrium is very good. Also approx 4 miles from the airport on Wilkenson Blvd(going toward town) is the Smokehouse BBQ. It will be on the left.
P.S. Smokehouse has a great breakfast & great service.

Well scratch the Smokehouse on Wilkenson Blvd. Went there for my usual Mo. morn. breakfast & they were closed. The manager was there putting the final touches on the close down. He said business was just not good enough & they are now done. I'm sorry to see it go.

Hands-down no question the Salt Lick in Austin, TX (not the one at the airport, but the real one in the city!)

Wanderbug Jan 27, 2007 3:34 pm

Anyone else ever go to The Ribhouse in Longmont, CO? I used to go to lunch with coworkers here pretty often. Their prices are a bit high but the portions are huge and shockingly, their sides are actually really tasty. The folks who own it are super nice and the portions are huge. I'm not sure it's the absolute best BBQ I've ever had, but it's wayy above average.

Best BBQ In the U.S.

Going off of the other "Best..." threads, I thought I would start a clone about one of my favorite foods, BBQ.

I have to go with Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor, TX, right outside of Austin (map)

They have most of the BBQ favorites, but I usually stick with the brisket and sides. They give you a "taster" while you wait at the counter. It is the juiciest, most perfectly cooked brisket I have ever had. They give you BBQ sauce, but it isn't needed.

If you go on Saturday make sure you get there before 2pm or they will be sold out and about to close.

It's a great place if you're in the Austin area, if you're in Houston it could be a day trip.

So where are your favorite places for BBQ?

edwin_p_morales Apr 19, 2007 9:58 am

I thought you were talking about BBQ -- what's the mention of "brisket" all about? Everyone knows BBQ is composed of pork.

;)

But the best BBQ in the US is in Lexington, NC. End of story. Most BBQ per capita of any place in the world.

BiziBB Aug 23, 2008 7:39 pm

I would love to find a good barbecue place on my next Us trip - preferably in the NC style, even if it is elsewhere. ;) ^

BBQ in NY???? They don't compare and with good reason being North of the Mason-Dixon.

Sonny's for a chain in the South
Michelbob's in Southern FL

Well I can give you the one we do some of our FFOCUS do's at as well as some of us in the CLT area eat there every month or so. It is maybe 45min driving time from Clt airport going north of I77 at exit 49B. Name of the place is
Carolina Bar-B-Q
213 Salisbury Rd
Statesville,NC
Phone 704 873-5585
I don't know how to post links but if you Google this you can find it. Perhaps next time when we get together I'll post in Community Buzz in case anyone is in the area & would like to join. By the way last time SS255 flew all the way from LAX to join us & she wasn't dissappointed.

As one of the group who goes to these BBQ meetings, I'll second Coach's recommendation.

We also go to Carter Brothers BBQ in High Point, NC and find it excellent also.

intrepid720 Aug 28, 2008 3:09 pm

My vote goes to Salt Lick outside Austin for Best Brisket and Best atmosphere.

I am a firm believer that the more the place looks like it's going to fall over, the better the BBQ, and for that reason, and because I always eat myself sick, Best Ribs goes to Cattle Drive, southeast of Houston.

Admittedly not the best in the USA, but they are plenty delicious enough for an Honorable Mention, and will most likely be catering my wedding, is Sagebrush in Grand Lake, CO.

GuyverII Aug 28, 2008 4:40 pm

O.B.'s BBQ off of I-75 near Atlanta. Maybe McDonough, GA?

I'll have to remember that one if I ever make it out to NC. I'd be heading to Statesville anyway, to visit the Gillette-Evernham Motorsports Shop, so it's always nice to know of a good place to eat in the area. :D

I have to disagree. I visited Dreamland this week and was underwhelmed. Ribs weren't cooked well...the sauce was nice, but the food itself didn't inspire. Comparing these to Rendezvous in Memphis, it's not even close...meat fell off the bone.

I'm feeling down today and that usually means I'm headed for all you can eat at lunch. Found myself at Sonny's with a plate of pulled pork. Sorry, but the sauces are ok. I tried a forkful without sauce and found it flavorless to kinda off tasting.

After 35 years of trying different places, my favorite bbq is still found at 2 smallish chains in TN: Buddy's & Calhoun's.

Finally, a chance to offer something to you all. I do know barbecue. I have childhood memories of hogs hanging to be cooked in my backyard.
Without a doubt... Parker's barbecue in Wilson and Greenville, Bill's in Wilson, and Wilbur's in Goldsboro. All in eastern NC.

Probably already posted, but if not had to be 12bones in Asheville, NC. The best ever! I only wish they sold their dry-rub on line.

Me, I'm a SF-girl who mostly eats chicken & veg & this place had me devoring ribs. Yikes! Yummy beyond belief!

troyb Aug 30, 2008 1:42 am

Hands down, The Rendezvous in Memphis, TN.

A great chain for ribs is Houston's. Several levels above anything you could ever get at a TGI Friday's, Chili's, etc.

I'm a novice here, and would like to set out to explore some of these spots over the coming months. My experience in this realm is limited to that place in San Diego featured in TOP GUN, a hut off the main drag in Austin, and the recently expanded place across from TOYS ARE US off BROADWAY in NYC. I know what I like in smoke, sauce and meat, but seldom find it. So I am sure there are enough folks out there who have experienced their empitome, and would be willing to share it with others. BTW feel free to also suggest local craft/microbrews to accompany the main dish.

Ribs and shaved beef are the only types of BBQ !?!

Sam and Dave's BBQ 1 in Marietta, Georgia. Hands down best pork in the southeast and honestly the best brisket you'll find in Georgia (which is not a common thing in GA).

Here is a good review on the place:

Renddezvous is only good for dry rub ribs and that's it. There is so much more to BBQ than ribs!

Houston's ribs are good, but man give me a small mom and pop place any day of the week and it's much more enjoyable overall.

Fair enough, I agree that they are really only good for ribs. Then again, I'm all about the ribs, so it works for me.

I also agree about mom and pop over a chain, but sometimes, in some places, you just want some consistency and to know what you're getting yourself into. That's when I go to Houston's. Take NYC for example, there are a couple hot spot BBQ places (Blue Smoke, Wildwood BBQ, Dinosaur BBQ), but for ribs I mostly choose Houston's. You won't find me at the Houston's in Memphis though, at least for BBQ.

Americans take their BBQ rather seriously ?

I'm seen a few travel and food shows which really give me the impression that in some parts of America, they really take their BBQ rather seriously

is this true ?

Yep it is, I love BBQ but some people just go crazy with/about it.

Texas and Tennessee probably contain the most serious of the BBQ fanatics :)

Houston would seem to be the BBQ fanatic place, considering the average waistline. Oh well, it keeps the healthcare industry busy!

There is already a great BBQ thread here already in DiningBuzz.
I'd recommend pressing this button to get there. ;)
(Here's a brisket thread which also popped up... plus a pulled pork thread (isn't that BBQ?)... there are many discussions in this forum, if neither has what you need. All just a click away. :))

There are lots of Texas threads here, even though they logically belong in the appropriate USA destination forum. Let your eyes and your appetite do the work. ;)

ECOTONE Dec 31, 2008 7:14 am

Do yourself a favor and do a MR through the MEM airport. Lots of great BBQ options within the terminal. Corky's, Interstate, Blue Note Cafe - all make great sandwich's.

gre Dec 31, 2008 7:54 am

It's not the meat - it's the sauce!

There are parts of the country where you could get into serious trouble for preferring sweet over vinegar or vice versa.
