Frog Legs
I was reading on some foods of New Orleans (which I posted in the South FT Dining Fourm). One of the foods mentioned were frog's legs.
I have not had them for years, but as a kid, I would almost always order them if they were on the menu. Delicious. I have not seen them anywhere for quite awhile. Anyone else a fan or have recent experiences w/Frog's legs? |
I'm same as you Willie... they were a favorite food when I was a kid, but I rarely see them anymore.
Tastes like chicken... http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/wink.gif And honestly, I seem to find that the meat UNDER the Extra Crispy coating of a KFC chicken leg tastes the exact same to me (has to be Extra Crispy, though...) |
Interesting. Saw more than a few times in some of the smaller Prague restaurants we visited this summer. In the small town of Kromeritz (where Amadeus was filmed) they even served them in the local Italian "pizzeria".

In Lyon, France they can be found in many restaurants. Quite tasty.
|
They are normally on the menu in most Thai and Indonesian restaurants, at least in NYC.
|
Try a Vietnamese restaurant. I've seen them listed on the menu but not translated, presumably to avoid making English-speaking customers squeamish. If so, look for a menu item including the word ech, with a "hat" and a rising-tone mark over the "e".
|
good tip on the Asian restaurants, found one at this place I went to: http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...ML/000211.html

My favourite place in Paris to enjoy frogs legs is at Chez Henri "Moulin a Vent" in the 5th, 20 Rue des Fosses-St. Bernard near the Jussieu metro station. Now thinking about them, can't wait to go back!!
Bon apetit!! [This message has been edited by luxury (edited Feb 22, 2004).] |
The best Frog Legs and also Perch I've ever had were in Hammond, IN at Phil Schmidts. It is just over the boarder from IL.
|
Spanish/tapas restaurants in the U.S. will sometimes have frog legs - often as specials. Cafe Iberico in Chicago had some amazing legs a few weeks ago.
|
Try the Satisfied Frog on Rt. 56 in Warrenville, IL. Great Fri Nite Fish Fry as well (done Northwoods Style)
|
a delicacy in many Alsacian Restaurants (Gisela just loves them, while I prefer the stuffed goose liver as my appetizer there.
|
One of the interior walls of Aunt Catfish's in Port Orange, FL, used to display a cartoon of legless frogs in wheelchairs. The framed cartoon disappeared after the summer 2004 hurricanes.
|
I think that was a Far Side cartoon.
Anyhow Frog Legs or cuisses de grenouille are very popular in Burgundy. We had a to-do at a restaurant out in the middle of nowhere on a pond that is famous for it. They taste great, but it's a bit difficult to eat around those tiny bones. |
The best frog legs are not found in a restaurant. During my teen years friends and I would get up around two am and head out to local lakes or creeks to go gigging. We would take the gig, flashlights, a sharp knife, a rifle (for the occasional snake), a mixture of flour, cornmeal (2-1) black pepper, garlic salt and onion salt, hot sauce, crisco and a cast iron skillet.
We would gig a mess of frogs, clean and cook them. We would eat them as the sun rose and then head to school. Now that's good eating or maybe I'm just longing for that "lost youth" :D |

Good memories indeed!
When i was a kid, my grandpa would take us to his cabin in upstate New York where we would get out or flashlights and go frog hunting in the evening. We'd get back, skin them up and have ourself a feast. I'm another who used to order them whenever I saw them, in fact I remember ording them at Nathan's in Time Square once. Haven't seen them anywhere is a long time. Maybe it is time for a trip to France! |
found many different Asian preparations of frog legs at Silver's Seafood Restaurant

I loved eating frog legs when I lived in Indonesia. Compared to any others in the menu, it's an expensive dish. They taste better than chicken!
Any good place for frog legs in Boston and NYC area? |
