These are the three star places. I wonder if there are single lists showing the one and two star places?

I've only been to one place on the three star list and it was a bit of a disaster. I actually think the one star places tend to offer the best value to creativity ratio.

Be careful with Las Vegas. The Michelin is a few years old

It's fun to see this old post.

My flight was delayed.

Yes I was wondering the same, lists with 1 star, 2, and 3.

It would be too long.

NYC alone has around 60 stars.

I've also had better meals at 1 and 2* than the 3* places.

I was just going to write the same thing. Went to a 3-star a couple of weeks ago that was nothing special, and a 1-star the week before that was really spectacular. Have a reservation at Osteria Francescana in a couple of weeks (3rd on the Pellegrino top 100) but it looks like it's been getting really flamed recently in online reviews. Definitely wondering how that's going to turn out.

That happens:D

SugoiHikouki Jun 28, 2013 9:00 pm

I've had varying experiences at 1/2/3* places. It really depends on the place, and sometimes what they're serving that day. For some of the 3* places, sometimes they're stuck with serving a few "classics" that they just cannot take off the menu. But when they are allowed to pull out all the stops, they can do absolutely amazing things.

On my recent trip to Tokyo I had the chance to dine at Ryugin and Sushi Mizutani on back to back nights - http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip-...tg-f-qr-c.html Ryugin was stellar, and Mizutani was good if you spoke Japanese, service was a bit 'off' but that is to be expected by foreigners, I felt a little scared there is a good way to put it

Ate at Osteria Francescana yesterday with the full Monty Sensations menu with wine pairings. Not sure where those bad reviews came from because this was indeed one of the greatest meals I've ever had. Walked away after several hours longing for just one or two more courses. Worth the hype

Anyone been to El Celler de Can Roca? Looks like they claim to be booked up for a year so might be a tall order. I also read that Noma got 100k requests when they hit number one so might just have to wait awhile

Sure, it's not an objective rating of the world's best restaurants, but that would be impossible to do. There are also bound to be great restaurants missed out as well as some restaurants which just don't deliver on visits.

Many of the best meals I've had have been at 3* places (Joel Robuchon Ebisu in Tokyo, Martin Berasetegui in San Sebastian, the Fat Duck in Bray), and am really looking forward to Joel Robuchon's 3* restaurant in Vegas on Friday provided I don't have any delays on my flights there!

My friend just went to Martin Berasetegui in San Sebastian last month and said it was amazing. Definitely outstanding food however at an extremely hefty bill.

EuropeanPete Jul 29, 2013 11:12 am

It wasn't cheap, but from memory the bill was comparable to a comparable London restaurant (and probably 2* rather than 3*).

Every Michelin 3 star restaurant package

First one on flyertalk to go on this package, please let the rest of us know!

VivoPerLei Aug 2, 2013 12:31 am

Sounds like fun in theory, but I suspect it will get old pretty quickly. I'm assuming the package includes the full chef's menu at each place with wine pairings, but it didn't really come right out and say that. When they get around to visiting my nearby 3-star they're not going to want to eat for a while afterwards. Probably the heaviest meal I've ever had in my life. I wouldn't go back.

Kgmm77 Aug 5, 2013 1:29 pm

Clearly aimed at the "more money than taste" nouveau riche crowd. Surely there's as much pleasure in finding a lesser known restaurant ahead of the Michelin/San Pelligrino raters or even better one who has no aspiration or want of stars? One of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had the proprietor allegedly chased the Michelin inspector out of his restaurant before he could sit down! :D

Rudi Aug 6, 2013 10:51 am

after over 50 years of visiting Michelin places 1-3* Michelin places 'all the time' (formerly having been based in Basel in was just a hop of 2 km to get to France (Alsace) and/or Germany (Baden-Württemberg and the black forest), recently I and Gisela tend to prefer the 'bib gourmand' rated places (good food for a very reasonable price).

My most astonishing recent experience were at the simple non-star-rated various Chinese and Malaysia Michelin places (having visited all of them during last years US Tennis Open) in Flushing (Queens NY). Flushing is just a one tube-stop away from the Tennis (and Mets) stadium.

My favourites there were (all in the NY Michelin guide): Mulan (red in the Michelin guide) 136-17 39th Ave, (@ Main Street) 2nd Floor, NY11354 Flushing; Little Pepper (bib gourmand) 18-24 College Point Blvd (beten 19th and 20th ave), 11354 Flushing; Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao (also named Nan Shian Dumpling House) 38-12 Prince Street (bet. 38th & 39th ave), 11354 Flushing; Spicy & Tasty 39-07 Prince Street (at 39th ave), 11354 Flushing; Sentosa (Malaysian) 39-07 Prince Street (at 39th ave) Unit 1F 11354 Flushing; Corner 28 (but only the first floor), 40-2840- Main Street (@ 40th street), 11354 Flushing.

In general they never failed to serve me excellent

different dumplings and

萝卜糕 (luo bo gao) - fried white radish patty/turnip cake/turnip pudding

干炒牛河 (gan chao niu he) - stir-fried rice noodles with beef

肠粉 (chang fen) - rice noddle roll/steamed vermicelli roll

vegi. Spring Roll 斋春卷 (Zhai Chun Juan)

or 素春卷 (Su Chun Juan)

beef - 牛肉(niu rou)

I was there for lunch but they were only ranked #3 at that point. It was spectacular.

I'm currently pestering them, but so far haven't gotten in. I told them anytime in the next two years they could confirm a reservation I would commit. Still waiting.

Sort of unrelated, but this guy has my dream job. Looks like he made his fortune in business, then became a restaurant critic. I like his reviews. He always makes a point of highlighting the percent markup on the wine at each place.

Finding the posts in this thread having a slightly varied merit, I still have difficulties trusting an OP with a CV of a Frequent Eater at a Hamburger chain

Am taking a friend to dinner, and for the life of me can't decide which one to choose:

This: http://lazare-paris.fr

or this: http://atelier-robuchon-saint-germai...fr/accueil.php..

If I were your friend then either would be very nice, but given the choice......Lazare seems a more genuine place to me. Although Joel's place seems, ah decisions, decisions.

(Glad you ditched Arpege!)

Love Lazar, problem is I never reserve, and at Lazar I would have to be there 15 in advance to get a seat on the counter (my fav place to eat ANYWHERE).

Since I have a pull at Joel, went there instead and got 2 seats.

And I just LOVE Arpege. He does such a great job with all his veggies.

She is going through a very hard time and they made her feel like a queen, so it was a great choice.

What's the matter with L'Arpege? On my bucket list

I'll be going to HK in March and was wondering if I have to call in advance to RSVP in either Lung King Heen or L’Atelier?

Thanks!

Sadly, Takashi is closing at the end of the year. I'm personally stoked to go to Alinea at some point but am saving it for a special occasion. I've only knocked out 6 of these, and none of the 2-3 stars yet.

I was at Sixteen not too long ago (end of October). The food was excellent overall, the wine pairing was one of the best I've had, and the service was as expected, although the theme (of course there was a theme!) was a bit goofy. The price was shockingly high; I've paid less at three-stars in NYC and Tokyo.

Going to be in Ghent on my birthday in April. 7 one star restaurants. Anyone been to one and have a preference? I think I'd like something distinctly local.

Going to Alinea in a month. Exciting!

VivoPerLei Mar 12, 2015 11:06 am

This is just sad. L'Arnsbourg lost its chef and its three stars. I had the best meal I ever had there.

I ate there in early Jan and wasn't impressed. Food was decent, service rushed, but just not worth the money. Experience was probably the best. They do have some nice surprises.

We visited Restaurant Martin Berasategui outside of San Sebastian in Spain a few months back--our first 3-Michelin star restaurant--and were quite impressed. What really stood out for me was that out of 14 courses, there wasn't a single one that we could finger as our "favorite"; they were all that good. (And, of course, as expected of 3 stars, the service was fantastic.) I believe the set menu price was around $350 a head, with the wine we selected, so not an everyday place... but still one of the best food experiences we've had.

In a couple of months, we're visiting Nakamura in Kyoto for our second 3-star experience and are looking forward to it (and to the exchange rate; 23k yen a head is not as injurious on the wallet).

I ended up at Martin Berasategui after a whole host of other San Sebastian 3* bookings didn't happen, but I really enjoyed it too. Looking back it wasn't the absolute best meal I've ever had, but I can't help think that if it were in anywhere else but San Sebastian it would be a lot more famous.

I'm having a very Michelin-y week this week. Tomorrow I'm going to the 2* Cheval Blanc in Basel and then on Saturday I've got a seat at a London pop-up of Paco Rancero from the 2* Sublimotion which is the world's most expensive restaurant.

EuropeanPete Mar 20, 2015 9:03 am

I must say, Cheval Blanc was exceptional even by the standards of a 2* Michelin restaurant.

Upon arrival at the hotel the guest services head somehow figured out who I was and talked about why I was in Basel and how often, which I had briefly mentioned in the email. I was recognised at the hotel bar (which I'd been to once before) and served a pre-dinner drink. When I decided to go through the hotel the guest services lead had already got me a paper and magazine to read and given my name to each member of the serving team who all referred to me by name throughout, including the Head Chef who did a walk around after dinner service. I actually have a slight suspicion they may have thought I was from Michelin.

As for the food, every course of the contemporary French (with Mediterranean accents) tasting menu exactly hit the spot. For a good tasting menu I'd expect 1-2 stars, 2-3 pretty good dishes and 3-4 which were a bit pointless. Cheval Blanc hit somewhere between exceptional and pretty good on every dish.

I immediately decided to go back again, but after having massively overspent today on my Easter plans I think I'll save the €350 for one person (incl. 3 glasses of wine) - but I'm still tempted.

Kagehitokiri Mar 20, 2015 9:23 am

EuropeanPete, they at least had your contact info, if not name as well, right?
