So I'll ask.... did Queen Elizabeth even try this? The list of ingredients is so weird and offputting. Where do eggplant, banana, mango, curry and mayo (mei you to the mayo.... yeah, I know, lame) go together in the same sentence, never mind recipe?

The original’s apricot purée makes sense as it would have been a substitute for mango chutney (still hugely popular in the U.K. but likely difficult to source in 1953). It also follows a trend from Victorian times to make dishes with curry powder (take Kedgeree, which was a favourite of the Queen, as an example). My grandfather served food to the Queen at certain State Banquets. My husband had a Coronation Chicken sandwich just yesterday, he bought it as its a kind of food I never make at home. |
I don't even know how those flavours would work together. But to each culture their own. I guess the british wouldn't be able to figure out a durian mango smoothie (neither would I, but I'm sure it exists somewhere)
