Tried the new McDonalds chicken sandwich with a bogo promotion. My son’s reaction was the same as mine underwhelming. We will stick with Chick Fila.

It's not a bad ripoff of Chick Fil A's sandwich. I don't always remember to tell them to add mayo, which I can't believe isn't already on the sandwich...it's pretty much a chicken sandwich staple. For that reason if nothing else, I'd go for Chick Fil A over McDonald's sandwich.
I also tried Burger King's new one, which is WAY out of balance. Too crunchy and the chicken was way too thick for a fast food chicken sandwich. It almost seems like they try for the biggest chicken breast they can find, over-bread it and fry it and then try to fit it on a bun. Never again. |
Many years ago, Max & Erma's made a killer Buffalo chicken sandwich. They're no longer the smallish locally owned chain that I remember, so I doubt that sandwich is the same either.

Yes...new one is PCH & Hawthorne. The far one is in Lomita....also on PCH past Crenshaw a ways. Prairie & Rosecrans is also considered geographically undesirable.

Has the world descended so deep into chaos that a fast food restaurant sandwich gets this much attention?

Other favorites were the chicken & sausage gumbo and the Cajun Nuggets - both long gone.

I cook about 90% of my meals at home. This chicken sandwich is a once in a long while guilty pleasure and it is really good --it is a perfect storm of super crispy fried chicken, nice bun, pickles, mayo. I doubt that many on here are eating it on a regular basis.

I don't understand the need for pickles on a chicken sandwich. My first exposure to this was Chik-Fil-A many years ago. I grew up working for McDonald's, and when the McChicken first came out nationwide in the late 80's, I enjoyed it, with the simple toppings of mayo and lettuce. A customer asked for cheese on it one day, so it piqued my interest, and found it to be much better with cheese, then with bacon and cheese. I left McD's in the early 90's and joined Checker's. Their version was much better with a larger patty with a different type of breading (more of a panko-style), again with lettuce and mayo only (I added the cheese and bacon, of course).
I tried the Popeye's version when it first came out and the rush was so much they were almost always sold out. I found the patty was too thick as the bun became too soggy from the left over oil from frying it. Now, I find getting a fried chicken sandwich to be too much, so I usually will remove the bun and eat the patty with a fork and knife with lettuce and mayo if I cannot get an actual chicken breast (w/bones). The Chicken Sandwich wars have heated up recently with all the fast food chains having their own versions, but what seems to be consistent now is that they all are made with pickles on them, and some are just bun, pickles, and the fried chicken breast. McDonald's commercials are even showing a McRib sandwich in them, so I thought they had a version like the McRib, drenched in BBQ sauce with slivered onions and pickles. I wonder what that may taste like? |
I caved.
I went to Popeye's tonight and got the sandwich. Other than being annoyed that this location doesn't have a drive-thru, it was perfect. I brought it home and it is packed in a foil lined bag so it stayed hot for the 10-15 minute drive. And it was the best. Craving was fulfilled so I won't be doing that again for a while. |
