On the OP question about what is the guilty pleasure for these, my dad was a fan of the Queen Anne's chocolate covered cherries (or even some of the worse ones!) purchased at Christmas time. I really like them and you can find them for $1 a box if you are lucky!

I guess I like the "crapppy drugstore chocolates" because Russell Stover, Whitman's, Mars, and Hershey's products are the ones I get. It's rare now that I eat chocolate bars due to diabetes, but my favorite ones are now Skor, Heath, and Butterfingers. If I see a package of miniatures at a dollar store, I will pick up a bag. It's usually 6-8 pieces and will last me a few weeks. When it comes to Whitman's or Russell Stover (they are made by the same company), my wife and I like the nut ones over everything else. I miss my parents living near Ocala, FL because every visit to them would include a stop at their factory outlet where we good see/get very good deals. Alas, the craving for chocolate has waned and my mom moved down near me after my dad passed away in 2012, so no more visits for me now.
I wonder why Skor and Heath are made by the same company. It is basically the same type of bar. Why the extra "p" in crappy? |

I’d never classify See’s as crappy drugstore chocolate.

I've once had it explained to me that it's something to do with the oils ? or something ? that they use for 'milk chocolate' in the US. Milk chocolate elsewhere is not my preference, but it is revolting in the US. 'Burning' seems to be a common descriptor for the flavour.
I couldn't help but wonder if this thread related to Valentine's Day! :p |
I generally stick with Lindt or Ferraro Rocher, but I can't resist Turtles when I see them. Mmm...I love Turtles!

I think there is a difference between candy and chocolate that is eaten because it is good chocolate.
I love candies like Reese's and twix and heath and m & m's but I don't think it is good chocolate. It is candy. I will be stocking up on candy on Monday....half price after VD. |

IIRC when I was a kid, Russell Stover chocolate was considered to be pretty good, generally above the drugstore and grocery store brands.
Somewhat later, as a grad student in the Bay Area, See's was considered to be pretty good and IIRC had their own stores in some locations. Now I'm generally happy with any genuine dark chocolate (plus white chocolate when it's available, and I'll even buy the pastel colored bunnies if I see them around Easter as I loved them as a kid), but my standard European chocolate is Neuhaus (if I don't have a lead to something better, such as a gift shop in a top hotel), then some genuine local gourmet stuff, then European Godiva (RIP). I'm not much of a chocolate eater, so I can easily leave it untouched until it's past its prime. |
Goo Goo Clusters is a chocolate with peanuts or pecans manufactured in Nashville. The only local place with GoGo Clusters is Cracker Barrel. I did order a box of the Snickers pecan bars about a year ago.

Trader Joe chocolate is very good. I have a half a dark chocolate bar every morning. It is made in Belgium and supposedly made by Callebaut.

I recently saw a documentary about Hershey and the milk is soured. So you're eating sour, and not burnt, milk. Better chocolates apparently have flavour, not flavor.

Do you do this (eating half a bar in the morning) because dark chocolate has a health benefit or because it satisfies your craving for chocolate and then you don’t want anything sweet for the rest of the day?

I have been doing this for maybe 10 years! I think I started because of the health benefit and it is certainly a lovely way to start my day (I have it before I eat anything else) but it doesn't really curb my sweet tooth for the rest of the day. It is for sure a craving at this point and I make sure I travel with it. I don't think I have skipped a day unless I couldn't eat anything in the morning like before a surgery.
