What to order at a Chinese vegetarian kosher restaurant?

I've been invited to a Chinese meal at Buddha Bodai -- a restaurant in Manhattan (probably the original one since there are two of the same name in Chinatown).

My dilemma: I generally hate most Chinese food I've had. Anything glutinous, sweet, made of fake meat (don't mind tofu itself generally), fried and very greasy or tasting of MSG really turns me off. The one thing I have enjoyed in other places has been steamed fish and plain greens.

So I'm wondering: can I navigate the menu of this place and find something that I'll enjoy? Or if I can't do that is it possible to order something "off menu" that will fit my parameters?

Menu here:

Advice welcome!

I'd try for a variety off the dim sum menu. It would be wise to ask for any sauce on the side, just to be safe. This way, you may make a mistake or two and still find yourself with something you can eat.

It might not hurt to ask the server for a little advice without going into so much detail that your questions seem insulting. Just a pick a couple attributes that you want to avoid: sweet, msg, gluten, for example.

Interesting dilemma indeed. Why not just contact them beforehand? That way going in you will know exactly what to order. One less thing on your plate to worry about.

The sweet and sour ribs have got to be great at a vegetarian kosher place.

The only thing I'd order at a Chinese vegetarian kosher restaurant is directions to a better restaurant.

I'd personally get the hot/sour soup &/or a noodle dish with veggies I like.

I looked through the menu, was surprised to see the lack of some sort of stir fried Chinese greens, which being a carnivore I still normally order as the flavors are terrific.

There are several mushroom options, including one with noodles, there is also a spinach dish as well as stir fried green beans. Dim Sum actually looks better as there are fewer fake meat options and several look very interesting.

I'm just curious, what does "vegetarian kosher" mean? Is there anything that is vegetarian that is not kosher?

Dunno but they display the rabbi's certificate on their website so they're not just calling it kosher.

Kosher also applies to dairy products. Buddhist vegetarian food can actually be very good and you will not find fake meat on the menu at a good one.

Kitchens have to be maintained in specific ways to produce kosher food. It's not just about the types of food.

Order enough bourbon to forget you're there.
