Crystal Clear Pepsi

Heard they brought this back for a limited time this summer. Anyone know who carries it?

I saw it at my local grocery store (HEB). Didn't buy any though.

Interesting web app. Unfortunately I know that several of the places they mentioned definitely do not have it, as I go to those regularly. But I will check out a few of the others.

I saw it at 7-11. Last time I saw it on the shelf I think Zima was being sold. Lol

Your beverage choices change by the day and sometimes by the hour and PepsiCo is there for you every sip of the way.

Why do they keep coming out with (and retreading) bad Pepsi products?

(1) Free publicity. The media loves to cover these "news" press releases.
(2) Shelf space. The more product shelf space the less room for competition. (The "big boys" pretty much control the shelf space of the major supermarkets.)
(3) Even if they sell XX million units and call it a "failure" it is XX million units that they sold (not at a loss) and XX million units of CocaBarfa that you didn't buy.

youreadyfreddie Aug 21, 2016 1:24 pm

I saw it at Safeway last week.

ysolde Aug 21, 2016 2:17 pm

I remember the first time they marketed that stuff. Didn't like it then.

MissJ Aug 21, 2016 2:21 pm

I can't see where you are located from my phone, buy in the PNW, they have it at Fred Meyer and a lot of other places. I bought some a few weeks ago right when it came out. I actually like it. I rarely drink soda so it's a nice, more subtle flavor. Not that I would make a habit of it, but it was okay for once in a while.

kipper Aug 21, 2016 3:21 pm

I saw it at my local grocery store earlier this week. IIRC, I also found it at Wal-Mart.

enviroian Aug 21, 2016 3:29 pm

Has anyone ever tasted it? It's supposed to taste identical to original Pepsi.

It didn't (at least the stuff in the 90s didn't). It was like a foul cross between Dr. Pepper and bubble gum. Did. Not. Work.

That sounds disgusting.

They are all bad in my book. :)

Pepsi just tastes too sweet and goes flat very quickly. I don't drink soda much but when I do I would like it to keep its carbonation.

TrojanHorse Aug 21, 2016 5:08 pm

Was there ever a clear coke ?

I actually liked it. I think it was just like Pepsi, but a bit lighter. The only difference was that it was caffeine free and had no food coloring, thus the clear look. Yes, Coke had Tab Clear, which was sugar free, which Pepsi Clear never was. Rumors are that Coke intentionally made it taste bad to confuse drinkers so Pepsi Clear would not succeed.

I did some looking online and I guess it was only released Aug 8th, so is probably only going to just start hitting shelves. Although this is a different formulation, and has caffeine.

To make money.

But who would have more than one (taste)?

phillygold Aug 21, 2016 7:49 pm

Has anyone tried Pepsi 1873 yet? Is it worthwhile? I have not seen it in my area.

chichi Aug 21, 2016 8:10 pm

Saw it in Publix here in the Atlanta area today.

They don't care. They've already sold xx millions of units. And then it leaves the shelf for another generation.

I wasn't being snarky. It helped me in my quest for Crystal Pepsi.

My kingdom for Diet Crystal Pepsi.

I tried. I did like it, had a somewhat richer flavor. I'm not sure it's enough better to charge so much extra for it.

Also drank an 1893 Ginger Cola and liked it a lot, probably more than the "regular" 1893.

I remember the original Crystal Pepsi and not really caring for it much. Guess I should at least try this one for the heck of it.

What exactly is Pepsi 1893? I haven't been able to figure that out - is it a new flavor, or just real sugar and special packaging?

Clear Pepsi reminds me of an old Tom Tomorrow cartoon where marketing geniuses extolled the virtues of clear soda and proposed ideas for other similarly useful products like flame-retardant potato chips and edible laundry detergent.

Madone59 Aug 22, 2016 9:30 am

I saw it this weekend on our grocery store. I am not paying $1.69 for a taste of 1989!!

No but here was clear tab. That failed miserably.

Reminds me of Zima.....thank you Wait Wait Don't Tell Me quizzes on NPR. ^

The only thing I can think of when I hear Crystal Pepsi is SNL's lampooning of it in this fake commercial. (For those that aren't old enough, this was stylized off of the original Crystal Pepsi ads that featured Van Halen's "Right Now" track).

Many years ago now, I used to sometimes eat at Kentucky Fried chicken for lunch. I would get the mashed potatoes as a side. One day I was warned that there was something wrong with the food coloring but that otherwise everything was fine. I opened up the little cup, and the grave was translucently clear. Tasted just like gravy, but was clear. That was when I realized how fake some of Kentucky Fried's stuff was.

I hope the 11 herbs and spices aren't fake!

Talking about miserable failures - I wonder if we should expect Pepsi Blue to make a return too?

crabbing Aug 23, 2016 4:35 am

i remember the clear cola craze from the 90s. i was never a fan of pepsi but was dating someone who loved it. i recall it tasted the same as regular pepsi (at least to me).

i always felt that clear colas flopped because they removed the caffeine as well as the coloring. you might as well decarbonate it too.

but if you're going to bring back old sodas, can we revive 7up gold?

In the same early 1990s timeframe as Crystal Pepsi and Zima (a clear malt beverage), there was also Amoco Clear -- gasoline without coloring. Better for the ozone hole was the tagline. (Whatever happened to the ozone hole?)

Wonder how many times those liquids got confused.

Cloudship Aug 23, 2016 12:10 pm

I thought they had to color gas to distinguish it from heating fuel, or is that the other way around?

How many people look at the gas they put in their car anyways?

tmiw Aug 31, 2016 8:35 pm

I tried it recently and I agree with everyone's assessment that it tastes pretty much like regular Pepsi. Which also makes me wonder: what's the point? The dark colored Pepsi is pretty much just as bad for you and I'm not opposed to lemon-lime sodas like Sierra Mist/7up/Sprite.

Disclaimer: I was way too young to drink it when it originally came out so I could be missing something.

Cloudship Sep 1, 2016 6:42 am

The original was caffeine free, which was a big difference (the new formula is not), and had no "artificial" additives. This new version does not taste quite the same as I remember, but I still kind of like it.

Btw, I did eventually find it at Dollar General. they had two bottles left. According tot he lady there it sold out very quickly. Family Dollar also said they had it and someone came in and bought them out of it.
