Interesting that this article says it's not sustainable. What is that centuries old American past time of being up in the middle of the night and going to the local river to net fish? Are those anchovies? Herring? Is that sustainable?

When I saw this post I immediately thought "alewife runs." Those
were a while ago - the species is under temporary protection along
the east coast until stocks replenish.

Sustainability refers to a a balance between supply and demand.
As the population increased in the 19th and 20th centuries, many
harvesting activities that once were sustainable became otherwise.

I think you are referring to smelt.

I've only seem them netted along the shores of Lake Michigan.

In Northern Ontario the annual smelt run is a sign of spring. During my youth we would go to any local river and dip net for smelts. They are fantastic. Remove the head and guts, dip in batter and pan fry in butter. :)
