Marketing Fail - McWrap?

Just saw a McDonald's commercial for the McWrap. Given that the W is silent, is this really a good name for this product? ;)

McDonald's issues are beyond the name. The customer service issue is already on another FT thread.

MCD has same store sales being even or down and franchisees mad over the Dollar Menu.

They want Market Share over franchisee success.

Marketing Fail - McWrap?

I actually like the wraps.

The premium McWraps were introduced here last week at a $2/ea. promo price. I tried them twice and neither were anything I'd pay $3.99 for at the regular price, and I'd have to be desperately hungry to buy another one on sale.

The English cucumber slices tasted odd, and the lettuce was completely wilted by the time I was within the bottom third of the wrap.

I kind of like the wraps. Maybe have one ever 2 months or so. Diet Coke + the chicken wrap. Kind of tasty every now and then... (I must have had smaller wraps...they're about $1.50 regular price.)

If it weren't for the $1 any size soft drinks, I'd probably never visit a McDonald's outside of a long roadtrip. That's literally the only reason I pull into the drive-thru. Once there, I may or may not add on a food item...

I had always assumed that the dollar menu was a huge success for them. It has been years since I've visited either a Burger King or Wendy's outside of a roadtrip.

I had one of the Big Mac Snack Wraps a few years ago. In my opinion, the beef is seasoned to blend well with the bun and the taste of the big mac elements on the wrap just didn't taste very good.

I never had another.

But they don't lose money on any of these dollar items...

The dollar soft drinks are great - in the summer I walk a lot, and there is a McDonalds on one of my walking routes, and I will stop in and get a diet coke.

It has been a long time since I bought food in one, I think it would have been a grilled cheese with apple slices (yes, a happy meal) when we stopped out of loo-break / hunger break necessity on a long road journey.

The $ drinks are good if the dispensers are properly calibrated

I still think McD's bfast options are decent if I don't have time for IHOP

I've been meaning to try the premium wraps

This. most of the time we just pull in for soda. Sometimes we'll get fries or a snack.

Get rid of the $1 soda and we probably don't go to mcdonald outside the occasional egg mcmuffin (I hear they have a new egg white one that I'll try next time)

9Benua Apr 23, 2013 8:38 am

I'll go there when they have the $2 Filet o Fish

HawaiiTrvlr Apr 23, 2013 11:00 am

I tried one of their premium chicken wraps and it was ok. Not sure I would ever need to try it again unless they had a coupon. I am happy with their value menu.

I don't think anyone has commented on the linguistic challenge of a "silent w" McWrap.

Nova, anyone?

Thank you. That was the reason for starting this thread.@:-)

Are "truth in advertising" laws finally being enforced?

:D

If that were the case, most everything sold by that chain (drinks notwithstanding) would be a "McWrap" ;)

If you intended this to be a serious question:

The pronunciation of "Mc" is not changed by what follow it. So pronouncing or not pronouncing the dubya is irrelevant.

(Actually, with a name like McCoy, the first c is silent, and what follows the Mc does make a difference when Mc is followed by C or K or L.)

(Also the Mc can be pronounced like mak or mek depending on what follows the Mc. And the dictionary writes that mek with an upside down e.)

(I'm sorry I posted this. It's too complicated. :D )

PurduExpat37 Apr 23, 2013 9:00 pm

Hmm, I don't usually eat at MacDo, but when I was a student in Vienna (a couple years ago) they had some shredded beef wrap with crispy onions and sour cream type sauce.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy that tasty wrap a few times before leaving that glorious city.

If you say it fast, it comes out McCrap. And no, it wasn't a real serious question but rather just an interesting observation. ;)

It's a wrap
It's from McDonalds

Of course they will call it McWrap

Not really sure how that's a marketing fail, even if you never heard of it, when you hear the name McWrap, doesn't matter is the W is silent or not, you will immediately think "Gee, McDonalds muse be making a Wrap now"

Now that this thread has been aptly moved to Dining Buzz:

No, I think "How appropriate!" when I hear the word "McCrap".

SirJman Apr 24, 2013 10:38 pm

Surely its a better name than the McFizz...

Advertising suggestions

I saw one sign on a McD's that said;

"McWrap sold here"

I have a few other suggestions including;

"Try our delicious McWrap!"
"On a diet? Eat our McWrap!"
"You could be full of McWrap!"
and finally...
"Buy one Mcwrap, get two McWraps!"

word games are fun, and this is a definite advertising fail.
FYI when I first heard this (not read it with the W) my first thought was not "Oh McDonalds is making a wrap", it was "Yeah McDonalds does have a lot of crap on their menu"

+1 The wraps are about the only lunch item I will eat at McD's anymore. They are also reasonably priced. To be fair I would not patronize McD's at all if it were not for my children who love the overpriced happy meals.

LapLap Jan 4, 2014 4:49 am

People have gotten over half the foods having a "muck" prefix at Mucky D's

Not sure if M'crap is any less appetising than a Muck Wrap. It does sound like my crap after all, which every one knows is much more acceptable than someone else's crap.
Could turn into street slang - "getting my crap together".

KevinDTW Jan 5, 2014 8:29 am

"McWrap" reminds me of the old joke about the low-roller Vegas casino advertising the "loosest craps in town."
