Amusingly all these places literally qualify for 3 Michelin stars:
"exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey" The only place I've gone to purely to eat was San Sebastian. It's about as good as you can get in that category, and I stopped off at Martin Berasategui for some good 3* food on top of all the pinxos. |
Coming up this week
I'm flying London to Syracuse, connecting through Chicago (dinner at Next), Miami (not long enough to leave the airport), and Sao Paulo (lunch at D.O.M.). The trip is to visit family, the connections are to eat.:D

Does beer count?
Two family members recently flew to VT for Heady Topper and a few beers from Hill Farmstead. If I knew I could get some Double Sunshine IPA, I would make a trip. |

Flew to Philadelphia for the purpose of trying the famed Philly Cheesesteaks, whoa what a mistake that was, friggin' cheez whiz. The roast pork was great.
They still don't hold a candle to Chicago's Italian beef sandwiches but of course this Chicago based/grown guy might be biased a bit there.:)

As I am quite the gourmand I once went to LAX for an afternoon to grab in n out. It was mainly because I forgot I had an expiring frequent flier ticket, but the lunch and 4 double doubles I was able to bring home were worth it!

Philly has awful cheesesteaks. The BEST cheesesteaks are at the philly cheesesteak shoppe on divisidero in san francisco, CA. the one in berkeley is quite good too.

I will vouch for Philly Cheesesteak Shoppe's awesomeness. I will say though, I've had outstanding cheesesteaks in Philly, and they weren't at Pat's or Geno's (most local shops blow Pat/Geno out of the water).

I ended up flying SLC-MSP-DFW-ATL-SLC with just over three hours in Dallas, where I rented a car for $14.99 from Hertz and went to Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell. I returned to the airport an hour or so later with a duffel bag stuffed with ~$70 worth of kick-... pit barbeque (ribs, sausage, chicken, etc., etc.). It was delicious and I wouldn't mind doing it again :D
I almost went to some burger place in MCI (or ICT?... I forget which) until I realized that I have (probably) better burgers here in SLC

Best Pho in the world (in a restaurant in Melbourne, Australia)
We made a trip down to Melbourne, Australia for the Pho, which according to a famous Hong Kong food critic, " ...worth flying down from Hong Kong to Melbourne just for this Pho." It's much better than all the Pho in Vietnam we sampled in Saigon, where we visited in this past Feb. 2nd Best Pho is in a restaurant in Paris.

Red Iguana in SLC is the best Mexican I have ever had. And I have been to Mexico three times.

After seeing an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" that featured a Fish and Chips shop that made Haggis in Santa Barbara, I was determined to take a road trip from San Jose to taste it. As it happened, a friend of mine from the UK will be visiting LA and wanted to meet up with me in SB. So the plan was solidifying. To top it off, I need just a 1K more miles on UA to get an award. So I just joined UADining and made a reservation for dinner at a restaurant in SB that gives me triple miles on food and 1K miles for signing up.
Hitting the road this morning! |

Pretty Bold statement... Challenge accepted! Will try it,thanks.
The best Mexican food I've ever had was not in NYC or Mexico, but two hours west of here in Wendover, UT, at the Salt Flats Cafe (exit 4 on I-80, attached to the Sinclair gas station). That is worth a trip, and I will hopefully go again before I leave for the summer. -J. |

I've been in SLC since August and have yet to go... I really need to do that sometime. They had a stand on Saturday for the TRAX airport line opening at the North Temple Frontrunner station and were serving free chili verde which was pretty good. Now that the TRAX is open, you can literally go from the airport to Red Iguana for $2.50 each way with no transfers.

As a part time food and travel writer, I'd love to hear some of your craziest stories of runs for the simple pleasure of dining in a particular restaurant (or place). How many of you have flown to Tokyo for a cocktail or Lima for a ceviche? Combined with a mileage run is ok as well, but I'd love to hear about the hardcore foodies here ....
