I like Kraken for a dark spiced rum.

dadamn Feb 17, 2014 12:25 am

My wife and I are currently in Maui on vacation and discovered Koloa rum
Their dark rum is incredibly tasty! Typically we travel light with only a couple carry-ons, but we're definitely checking a bag with a few bottles for the return flight.

I'll submit Ron Zacapa Centenario XO Solera Gran Reserva Especial. A couple of years more aging in cognac (French oak) casks than the Centenario 23. Fortunately, a friend who is a rum connoisseur had that, because for the price I am sticking with the 23 year old Centenario (which is cheaper in Mexico than in the US...)

Zaya gets my vote. Finding something on the local liquor store shelf is half the battle. I'm sure there are better sipping rums but it has to be something I can purchase locally.

Just tried 10 Cane and very much enjoyed it. Might have to call that one my current favorite.

stimpy Mar 23, 2014 3:30 am

I just found this in my local liquor store. From Reunion.

http://www.rivieredumat.com/sites/de...%20Reserve.png

And wow is it good. I can't wait to try the Opus 5 and the XO.

My latest pickup. It seems this Santo Domingo brand is well distributed in Europe.

I also found this while Googling around. A good reason to visit Santo Domingo. http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/m...and-sugar-cane

Bought a 1 litre bottle of Ron Castillo Gold from the supermercado last week for 50 pesos (US$6 or £3.60 in real money). :D

Comes from the same house in Puerto Rico that produces Bacardi Gold. I like a scoosh in my coffee now that the colder weather is here.....it does the job nicely. ^

This is probably off topic as it's not about straight rum, but their pre-made Mai tai, made with Koloa Gold is really good. It was served at a party and it tasted home-made.

Zaya Gran Reserva from Trinidad

plon May 30, 2014 3:15 pm

I'm a fan of Neisson Rhums from Martinique. The white is fantastic in a daiquiri, and the Reserve Speciale is fantastic way to end a nice evening on its own.

Rhum Agricole is slightly different at first (much more grassy to me) than other rums, but its fantastic and complex.

All this rum talk is making me thirsty.... :D

LondonElite May 30, 2014 4:31 pm

Diplomatico from Venezuela. Along with a nice cigar.

+1 to that. I've heard people knock it before, however, as a rum fan but not any kind of learned expert, I think it's got the perfect blend of a crisp light rum and the sweetness of a darker rum without all the heaviness. Big fan of 10 Cane in almost any recipe

On the heavier side, when I'm outside the US I do like any kind of Havana Club the bar is pouring

A solid combo. Diplomatico is hard to beat for the price.

I was in Miami last weekend and had dinner at Ola where they are known for, among other things, their mojitos. They had a Deluxe one with Zacapa
Solera 23 rum from Guatemala which was absolutely excellent.

Really ??? I've had worse - but it didn't come in a bottle. Thais don't even drink it much anymore as they prefer Sangsom. I consider it an outrage that it is mentioned with the fine quaffables on this thread :D

I had the XO recently. Fantastic. Shame it's no longer in production. :(

I'm a fan of Flor de Cana but I agree with others that the 18 year just feels like it's been sitting a bit too long.

I need to try more of the rhum agricoles.

On a related note, Sangsom sell an aged version for export which actually tastes like normal, reasonable rum.

My local liquor store is closing and everything is 20-30% off. I bought 4 bottles yesterday morning including a bottle of Angostura 1824 rum - paid under $50 for it and can't wait to try it.

bensyd Sep 21, 2014 8:45 pm

How's the Centenario rum from Costa Rica? I was at SJO last week and tempted to buy a bottle but I never see any locals drinking it.

stimpy Sep 22, 2014 2:08 am

Someone brought me a bottle of Brugal from the Dominican Republic last week and I have to say it goes down quite well.

Pic me up a couple bottles of Veuve Rose, please. :)

Anything made from grapes seems to have gone first.

It also helps to know what you're buying since he has moved product up from the bottom shelves as stock levels drop. At least one bottle I purchased was still too much after 25% off. But i viewed this as an opportunity to try a few new things and figured in general I would be ahead of the game. I have a couple bottles to give to my boys when they visit next. But i will be tasting them all before they leave.

I found the same after a local chain announced they were closing in my area a year or so ago.

Jacky, have you tried the Cambodian made rum from Samai Distillery in P.P.? Very young and very nice. Also, the shop just across from Himawari has a great selection and is crazy cheap. I'm doing a serious rum list for my project down in Kep(if you're ever in the 'hood).

whackyjacky Dec 1, 2014 1:42 am

I get over to Kampot now and again. I'm mulling over moving there. I'm afraid I'll miss the beach. I swim about 5 miles/week. I'll pm you before I go sometime, shoot over to Kep, & bend some elbows w/ya. BTW, I haven't had the rum of which you speak. I'll be up in PP in a week or 2 and look for it. The best I can get here is the St James 'Hors D'Age, which ain't too shabby at all (especially since it costs about half what I paid wholesale in the States).

Ron Centenario Añejo Especial

CMK10 Dec 20, 2014 7:53 pm

My brother bought a bottle of the Bacardi 8 Anos. I had a drink tonight, quite delicious, and at only $22 at the local ABC Store, a very good deal.

This was my "every day" rum for many years. Quite drinkable on it's own or with a splash of water or mixer. I don't drink much rum these days, but I always have some Bacardi 8 on my shelf, along with Capt Morgan Private Stock.

I'm a huge fan of Bundaberg 5. Mixed with coke, it is sensational. I also am rather partial to Havana Club Añejo Especial.

YVR Cockroach Dec 26, 2014 3:59 pm

From somewhere unexpected, Stroh from Austria. Bit of an interesting colour and flavour (buttery caramel and another flavour I can't describe). Good for rum teas ans rum toddies.

I picked up a bottle of Rhum Barbancourt from Haiti, aged 8 years. The kids will be here on vacation for a few days and I am hoping to serve a splash over ice for sitting on the dock at night. If it isn't drinkable, there's plenty of pineapple juice and coco lopez. It will not go to waste.

hong kong cocktails

I love rum as mixed drinks, some of the best cocktail drinks that you must try are, Daiquiri, Mojito, Hurricane, Piña Colada, Ribston Apple and Mumbai Government Punch. You can also check some of the best rum cocktail here: http://www.stockton.com.hk/best-cocktails-hong-kong/ :)

I thought the Barbancourt was a bit harsh. Zaya is still my favorite although I've taken a liking to the Angostura 1824 I opened last weekend. Ah, summertime is rum time.

stimpy Apr 29, 2015 5:07 am

I found this here in Europe at a random grocery store.

Pampero Aniversario Ron Extra Añejo - Reserva Exclusiva from Venezuela. Great taste and not at all harsh on the tongue. And I love the leather sack it comes with. :)

Same here. There's a bottle of Bacardi 8 anos in the back of the cabinet if anyone asks for a mixed drink with rum. And it's good enough to drink straight if one of the better bottles gets consumed before I can get out for a replacement.

Allyson518 Apr 29, 2015 9:31 am

Flor de Cana 18 is pretty amazing. I picked up my first bottle at the duty free store in CUN a few years ago and have been hooked ever since. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find here.
