Maybe in Caribbean or C American Airports. Where are you going ? Large liquor stores (or Safeways even) in the States would have 'em. Wherever you are, you should be able to find something decent. Just look for a bottle with some age and a nice mahogany color.

darthbimmer Dec 5, 2013 7:19 pm

At my last house party the bartender clued me in to Plantation rum from Barbados. At less than $15 for a 750mL bottle I will never purchase anything labelled "Bacardi" again. :p

aster Dec 6, 2013 4:41 am

Ok, now I'm convinced to give cane rum a try. :) Are there any popular (but still good) ones that I could easily pick up at an int'l airport?

I think it would really depend on the airport. Boulogne is probably the most popular of the decent Cane rums. You ought to be able to find it in the US if you google around though.

I really don't know for sure why these excellent rums are not generally available in the US, but my guess would be that the family that controls Bacardi has something to do with it. Or did back in the bad old days.

aster Dec 7, 2013 5:08 am

Would any of these cane rums be popular enough to be found at international airports like Singapore or Sydney?

I doubt it. As for airports, you'll probably only find these in French or Caribbean airports. You've a better chance at WAW.

whackyjacky Dec 7, 2013 7:00 am

I've only had a couple 'cane rums'. They were relatively expensive and they sucked. Until I drink something quaffable, I'm going to group them with stuff like 'white dogs' (Bourbon w/no barrel aging) as an acquired taste I don't wish to acquire.

That's all I knew for most of my life too until I went to France and discovered the amazingly better sugar cane based Rum's. Just smelling a good Rhum Agricole as it's called, you can easily tell the difference. The true spicy aroma of a good Agricole rum is very nice.

Most of the best come from Martinique or Guadeloupe. But the island of Reunion are quite good too, especially if you can lay your hands on the good privately made stuff.

This is one I'm drinking now
http://www.severinrhum.com/

Like a great whiskey, this is too good to mix with anything. Just drink it straight.

Everyone has his own taste, but this rum is in a totally different league that anything I've tasted from the DR or Cuba or any of the kinds sold in US markets.

There is one bar I found in the US that has good Cane rum. No surprise it's called Caņa Rum Bar. ;) Downtown LA right near the Staples Center.

Even the ordinary cane rums like http://www.rhumbologne.fr/en/ taste sooooo much better than any molasses based rum. http://www.rhumdemartinique.com/troisrivieres/ is another good choice. They even serve that at the Four Seasons London. ^

Quality Cane Rums are out there, and Zacapa claims to be from just cane too. But have you even tried the high end HC rums? They are as light (or dark) as 18 yr old Whisky.

EuropeanPete Dec 9, 2013 6:26 pm

Rum Agricole is a bit of an acquired taste. I can completely understand why some people like it, but the smell makes my stomach turn!

whackyjacky Dec 9, 2013 8:21 pm

If Zacapa is a cane rum, I retract my statement. I was thinking of 10 Cane and some other light rum that had 'cane' all over they label. Both bloody awful ! I really like RZ Centanario 23, but it's pricey and calling something 23 years old that has been in a solera is cheating. The oldest drop in the vat is 23 and the youngest is 6, so it's really 14.5 or so. It used to have true barrel aging (it was 26, the 1st time I had it) and wasn't so dark and sweet. Pretty hard to argue with success though.

I'm in the BA F lounge and saw a bottle of Zapaca XO sitting on the shelf so I poured myself a glass. I just got off a long haul flight and I'm a bit out of sorts, but it does taste pretty good. And it says right on the bottle "virgin sugar cane honey". I agree that this should be taken straight. No mixers!

And I agree that 10 Cane isn't that good at all. And I agree with EuropeanPete that everyone has their own taste! I just wanted to say that the Rhum Agricole options I noted above taste especially good and as someone who began my rum career in the US, it was quite a surprise to me to find that I didn't care much for molasses based rums and loved cane based rums from Martinique, Guadeloupe and Reunion. Everyone should give these a try if you haven't already.

owflyer Dec 11, 2013 10:04 pm

Just had some Centenario XX (20) tonight, it was the highest rated at the bar vs. Zacapa 23, Zaya, Flor de Cana 18 and Santa Teresa.

There are better rums than Cetenario XX out there, but at the price point would be tough to beat. Note, the price from highest to lowest was Flor de Cana, Zacapa, Santa Teresa, Centenario, Zaya; but the rating was Centenario, Zacapa, Zaya, Flor de Cana, Santa Teresa.

It was a blind taste test, 2 out of 5 thought they where drinking whisky, not uncommon I have found.

Nicaragua has some good rum

I think it is time for a Rum Do, any takers?

dukeman Dec 15, 2013 5:55 pm

Pyrat XO neat or with 1 or 2 cubes is my favorite sipping rum.

If we have it in Martinique or Guadeloupe I might be going in January or Feb on a business trip. (What's the emoticon for "I HOPE!"?)

My take would be somewhere in Central America as I have some contacts there; PTY, SJO, GUA or as we say Abuelo, Centenarrio or Zacapa as a possible visit?

However for travel costs the DR may be optimum for all.

Why not HAV? ;)

I would be a little interested in a Rum Do if I can make the dates, time, location, cost all work.

alpen1 Dec 17, 2013 7:04 pm

I would have serious interest in a rum Do :) ... can certainly provide some

Never was very fond of rum, but the Ron Antiguo de Solera Santa Teresa 1796 from Venezuela was a whole new world for me, a fantastic rum which has nothing in common with the stuff we used to mix with coke.

Another vote for Bundaberg Rum - it's an Australian brand - wish i could find it here in the US.

I like Bundy, but honestly it's not good enough to drink straight (unless I'm desperate) (:

LOL, I'm Australian, love rum, and agree with you about Bundy.

I do agree for the "regular" Bundy, but they are now making "premium " Bundy. have you tried the red? Definitely a step up from the regular.

stimpy Jan 13, 2014 12:52 pm

I just saw a promo at IST duty free for Ron Zacapa Sistema Solera Gran Reserva 23 so I made an impulse buy. 175 Lira didn't seem too bad a price. And the great taste makes it worth it. ^

dchristiva Jan 13, 2014 12:55 pm

Flor de Cana is my rum of choice. Decent value, in my book.

But, I admit that I am not a rum-sipper. Pretty much strictly for mixing.

For some reason just about everybody (me included) likes the FDC 12 better than the 18. They're all pretty good though.

Alpha Jan 18, 2014 6:14 pm

I went on a bit of a rum spree while on a Caribbean cruise recently and was totally blown away by white agricole. It is RIDICULOUS. I don't think you'd ever have heard of it unless you've been to Grenada but Rivers is amazing. http://rumconnection.com/river-antoine/

Interesting. I find the 12-year tastes surprisingly like whiskey (specifically, Jameson) to me - it's not bad, just very different from what I usually expect rum to taste like. I don't notice that flavor with the cheaper versions of FDC.

Maybe I'm just weird, though - always a possibility.

Yea! Another convert to Agricole. :)

Pyrat XO reserve. Just open the bottle and the aroma of the oak aging rum will capture your nose.

Pyrat 1623 is supposed to be even better ( and 10 times more expensive). It's on my wish list , along with Macallan 25.

The Deal Mommy Jan 19, 2014 10:10 am

Havana Club Anejo when I can get it, although I think now it's a nostalgia thing. Zacapa 23 is amazing, but I just got a bottle of Haitian that was recommended to me by a cruise ship bartender: Barbancourt 15 year, that is every bit as good, if not better, for sipping, and 1/2 the price!

Flor de Cana 7 for everyday mixing.

And agreed...a well aged rum is every bit the experience of a scotch whisky.

Andy290 Jan 19, 2014 10:13 am

Havana Club 7 with coke or Havana Club Barrel proof on its own :D

Scheitan Feb 5, 2014 7:07 am

B13 for me. Not sure if it is available in the US though.

I need to find this.

On a recent trip to Puerto Rico, I tried a rum called Trigo Reserva Aneja. I will admit (and my trip report confirm) that it wasn't my first tipple of the evening, but I recall it being very delicious and distinctive. Cheers!

I think that he was referring to Selecion de Maestro. It's very nice indeed.
