Anyone else prefer grapefruit to oranges?

I think grapefruit is the far superior citrus. What do you think?

ExpatSomchai Apr 19, 2012 3:01 pm

Especially the Pink ones

transparent Apr 19, 2012 5:12 pm

If only they came in cutie size, seedless, and were easy to peel, they would be perfect...

deniah Apr 19, 2012 7:24 pm

i think the pomelo is the most superior citrus

Rind can be wonderfully aromatic too

I don't "prefer" it over oranges (blood orange is probably my favorite fruit), but I certainly consider it to be worthy of consideration...

I love a grapefruit for breakfast... the GF an I will split one every once in a while... if it's not sweet enough, I'll sprinkle some sugar (for her) or stevia (for me) on it to cut the sourness. Makes an excellent lo-cal brekkie.

Grapefruit also have some interesting properties that other citrus do not possess. For example, there is an enzyme that is unique to grapefruit, that blocks fat absorption in humans. So if you eat a grapefruit, or have a glass of grapefruit juice, before chowing down on a big sausage/bacon/potatos/eggs/etc. breakfast, you will actually "pass" more of the fat than you otherwise would.

There is another enzyme, also unique to grapefruit, that magnifies the effects of certain types of drugs. (It's why some drugs carry warning labels against grapefruit eating). You can google this for more info.

Oh yea, and a Stoli Greyhound is probably in my top 10 of cocktails. ^ ^

I think I'll have one or a few whilst watching the Yankees beat the Sox. ;)

  • Oranges and grapefruit are similar in vitamin content, but oranges offer 130 percent of the average daily value of vitamin C, while grapefruits have 100 percent.
  • Grapefruit contains low calories and citrus is no exception.
  • A half of a grapefruit has 60 calories and an orange has 80 calories.
  • Grapefruit is a better source of vitamin A, providing 35 percent of the daily value; oranges contain 2 percent.
  • Grapefruits are found in White, pink and ruby red colors. All have similar flavor and are appealingly juicy. The pink and red varieties have a higher vitamin content. The different kinds of oranges are sweet, sour and mandarin, or tangerine.
  • Both fruits provide small amounts of thiamine, niacin, foliate, riboflavin and B6.

To make it peel easy, briefly dunk an orange or grapefruit into boiling water and let it sit a bit. When you're ready to eat it, it'll peel very easy and the pith (white stuff) won't be sticking to the fruit.

Can't help you with the seeds or size.

Canarsie Apr 20, 2012 1:38 pm

While I enjoy eating oranges, I prefer grapefruit.

An even easier solution is to use the palm of your hand to firmly roll the citrus fruit around several times on a hard surface. This helps to loosen the peel from the fruit.

You thread title is like a thought from my own mind! I eat one most days for breakfast. I peel it and eat it like an orange. My husband doesn't like the skin of the individual pieces, his Mom used to peel them for him, something I will never do....

zippypinhead Apr 20, 2012 9:08 pm

What a cruel, cruel thread.... I love grapefruit & could eat it for breakfast lunch 'n dinner.
But, the cardiologist says no.:(
Grapefruit has some sort of problems with quite a few medications & can render some of 'em useless. That's why you would rarely see it on the menu in a hospital.

Scottrick Apr 20, 2012 10:51 pm

I switched to grapefruit only recently after discovering the Harbor Island variety at our local Whole Foods. For whatever reason, I rarely see the Ruby variety here, but Ruby is all I see when I go to my parents' in California.

Harbor Island is pinkish but mostly white, and is not nearly as bitter. Still, I used to be a big orange juice fan and now think it is way too sweet, so my tastes have apparently adapted.

That sounds like the lychee, nature's best tropical fruit!

aster Apr 22, 2012 8:49 pm

Grapefruit juice all the way, I always get a bottle of freshly-squeezed one at my local supermarket. Sure beats the big brand ones that are carton-packed thousands of miles away...

reft Apr 23, 2012 7:31 am

Worth noting, among the same brand, it's grapefruit juice not-from-concentrate in the carton at the store, but look a the ingredients of the same brand in other packaging and it might be more like grapefruit flavored water.

To me, this whole thread is like comparing Grapefruit and Oranges

traveltuna Apr 30, 2012 6:25 pm

I am partial to sweet clementines :)

KathyWdrf Aug 15, 2012 5:13 pm

Yes. Oranges are a bit too sweet.

I wish grapefruit really did have the fat-blocking property that an earlier poster attributed to them. At least in my case, they don't seem to work. :( ;)

They block the fat from leaving the body. You have it reversed.

Sweet Clementines, good times never seemed so good....

GRALISTAIR Aug 15, 2012 7:25 pm

Grapefruit juice at breakfast. Orange juice goes better with Vodka.

aglp2k Aug 15, 2012 7:56 pm

Some of the restaurante have the ready to eat grapefruit wedges with no skin/seeds and I love to them for breakfast when I travel. I guess they come in a can or a jar. Any idea where I can buy them in bulk? I looked at Costco and Sam's club but no luck in finding.

They come in wholesale 5 gal pails.

McGoogles Aug 15, 2012 9:44 pm

Grapefuit is best in cocktails. For breakfast... blech.

Food service wholesaler will have them, but they generally do not sell to the public. If you know any restaurants well you might be able to have them order a pail for you.
They also need to be refrigerated, so imaging the size of a larger pail of paint and fit that into your fridge.

...or, a couple of other grapefruit aficionados could share in the cost and they could divide the contents of the five gallon container into smaller containers to fit in their respective refrigerators and repeat as necessary.

I would be one of those people, if I could...

tentseller Aug 17, 2012 5:19 am

Umm, maybe I should have one of our establishment order some and repack them into 1 gallon containers to resell to grapefruit loving FTers? BUT Refrigerated shipping will probably kill this idea.

Jaimito Cartero Aug 17, 2012 5:22 am

Nope. Oranges all the way.

BuildingMyBento Aug 18, 2012 10:52 am

I think they're both enjoyable, but I often add a bit of lemon to orange juice, to lessen the saccharine impact...just not so much to try to make it taste like a grapefruit.

dimmedlights Aug 18, 2012 8:34 pm

I enjoy pink sweet grapefruit & bloody oranges ;)

I completely agree...

...however, I wonder if comparing grapefruits to oranges is like...well...comparing apples to oranges...

Fruitgirl2021 Jan 18, 2021 11:42 am

Have you ever tried Rio Ruby Red Grapefruit from Pittman and Davis?
Their grapefruit is far superior over all other grapefruit!

yyznomad Jan 18, 2021 12:41 pm

I don't mind grapefruit, but I like oranges better.

I would like to have grapefruit but they always feel too sour compared to oranges, on average.

Thank you for resurrecting a 9 year old thread. Where did all those people go?

I like ruby red grapefruit and California navel oranges best. But I grab a pink grapefruit off the neighbors tree every other day because it’s free and would otherwise go to waste.

Oh, quoting my 9-years young self...I'm still a fan of both, but have found a new place that has the best oranges I've ever tasted: Veracruz, Mexico. Those oranges are in their own league of deliciousness.

However, I definitely do still enjoy drinking any type of grapefruit juice to orange juice when not in Mexico...

JBord Jan 19, 2021 1:29 pm

Put me down as firmly in the grapefruit column.
I probably haven't had an actual orange since I was a kid. I still like and drink orange juice, but if given the choice I'll pick grapefruit juice.
