Crackers in Milk
 

Am I the only one who enjoys this delicacy? I mentioned it to a group of friends, and they all thought the idea was totally disgusting. But it is something my grandfather used to have all the time, my father enjoys, I enjoy, my mother isn't crazy about it but the idea isn't foreign to her. I am talking simple saltines in milk. Especially when they get all nice and mushy.

I've not tried it. I do enjoy graham crackers in milk, but the thought of saltines in milk doesn't appeal to me.

It was one of my Dad's holdovers from the great depression. He ate it fairly often as a bedtime snack when I was a wee lad. Sometimes I joined him. It was sorta-kinda OK - then.

Now when you say "crackers" do you mean Oreos? Or perhaps Biscoff?

All kidding aside, the only I mixed the two is when I took "The Six Saltine Challenge" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltine_cracker_challenge) and I washed them down (after winning!) with milk. They didn't go together too badly actually.

I am supposed to have a small snack every p.m. with prescription Niaspan. For me, what works best--true confession if you won't laugh :eek: -- is one or two saltines crumbled into about a fourth of a cup of low-fat buttermilk, a snack that I find a lot more agreeable than the recommended applesauce.

My mother enjoyed saltines crumbled in buttermilk when I was growing up. It's a southern thing, y'all.

I'd never heard of saltines in regular milk, however--or as it was once called, "sweet milk." Y'all must not be from the south.

I've never tried it (I don't do dairy) but have observed many a family member enjoying saltines and buttermilk. Yes, I live in the south.

When I was a little kid in elementary school, part of our cultural-sensitivity training was to watch a film called "J.T." about a Harlem youth growing up in adverse circumstances.

At one point the film showed his meagre breakfast: graham crackers mushed in a bowl with milk. As one, the entire class said "MMMMmmm!" Even then I could tell the intended message had been a tad diluted http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ile_tongue.gif

How are you defining crackers?

Saltines?
Oyster Crackers?
Oreos?

For me with milk that would be a No, Hell No, and Yes.

ish. Never heard of that before. One of my grandparents used to soak toast in milk and honey until it was mushy though.

At first I was thinking what the big deal was with crackers in milk. We've always called called cookies "crackers".

Been doing it for 50 years, do not know anyone else that appreciates the combo. Just had a bowl and thought I would Google crackers and milk to see what I would get,, and low and behold there are a couple of us..

Grandma BamaVol told tales of crackers and milk for dinner during the depression. I got the impression that the crackers were Ritz. I also had the impression that it was strictly a matter of affordability. They'd have eaten steak if there had been money for it. I never saw her eat this as an adult. And thankfully, it was never served to me.

Have you ever tried popcorn in milk? Needs salt and butter, but surprisingly good, too.

To everyone, seriously try the crackers in milk sometime. I would stick with the saltines or soda crackers (or oyster crackers in a pinch). It is surprisingly good.

Ugh. Even mushy cereal in milk is disgusting to me. Can't imagine flavorless bready crackers. Isn't it basically like eating Cheerios that have been soaking far too long?
