Revolving Rooftop Restaurants
Where is the most impressive rooftop revolving restaurant you have patronized? Wife and I both like them and have been in one in Chicago and in San Antonio.....
|
Not that impressive (food/service-wise), but the Marriott in Time Square has a nice view of the city skyline (they provide an outline map so you can decipher the buildings) from their restaurant (View)
Much higher in altitude (1000+ feet) is the CN Tower in Toronto - 360 Restaurant -- supposedly you can see Niagara Falls on a nice day -- I did not the 2 times I went. |
The one atop Seattle's Space Needle is terrible. Expensive, indifferent food, like a trip to 1973 except for the prices.
|
The only one I've been to is the one on top of the Schilthorn in Switzerland. It was also Blofeld's lair in a James Bond film. You can watch scenes from the movie at the restaurant (in another room, thankfully) and they serve a James Bond Brunch.
As I recall, it was expensive and the food mediocre. You pay to be revolving at the top of the Alps. The view is second to none, though. :) http://www.schilthorn.ch/?uid=32 |

I don't have any personal experience, but this article recommends Five Sixty at the Reunion Tower in Dallas.

I'm not big on "revolving" restaurants though. I've found that a spectacular view can be offered with out the gimmick. I suggest the Signature Room in Chicago, and Yamashiro's in Los Angeles, both amazing views, especially at night. HP |
Interesting info all....does anyone know of one in Denver?
|
The Auckland Sky Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The food was good (not great), but the view was unforgetable.

The restaurant in the Kamzik TV Tower in Bratislava, Slovak Republic:
http://images.travelpod.com/users/jc...k-tv-tower.jpg The UFO Restaurant across the Danube at Bratislava is atop the Novy Most bridge, but I am not sure whether it revolves: http://www.virtourist.com/europe/bra.../images/26.jpg |
I have never, ever been impressed with the food at a revolving restaurant. I think I'm like 0/6 on them. I only do drinks in those now if I just really want to see the view.
I guess they just always end up being a perfect storm of tourist trap. |

Skylon Tower Niagara Falls
Went once here :
Welcome to the world-famous Skylon Tower Niagara Falls. Located in the heart of the Niagara Falls hotel, dining and entertainment district the Skylon Tower is the most famous landmark next to the Falls. Situated just steps from the Falls and across from Fallsview Casino the Skylon Tower offers visitors the very best in Niagara Falls attraction, fine dining and family restaurant selection http://www.skylon.com/ |

The restaurant in the Hyatt Regency in downtown Kansas City is a decent steakhouse with great views. I don't recall the name, it may be "Skies." |
A memorable experience was dining in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. This was many years ago, but we will never forget the sunset; layers of soft pink clouds.
Beautiful. |

One of my favorites, although not rotating was the New York Grill on top of the Park Hyatt Tokyo. |

Hyatt Regency in San Francisco has decent food though nothing special. Make sure it's not a foggy day.
|
Tons of good info here....thanks all!

I've always liked the Compass Room at the Phoenix Hyatt. There's a table minimum spend of $15 so I usually go for drinks/dessert. Food isn't bad, though overpriced. In the summer it's quite empty and has always been a good date spot for me. Nice enough views too, especially when the Diamondbacks are playing.

My little town astonishingly has two:
http://www.topofvancouver.com/ http://www.cloud9restaurant.ca/index.html Only have been to the latter. The food is competent. |
CK's Revolving Restaurant at the IAH Marriott is one of the more depressing places to eat by yourself.
|
There's one in Sydney Tower. I haven't been there since I was about 4 (it was my idea), and I remember my Mum got food poisoning and/or motion sickness. The problem with revolving restaurants is that the highlight of the experience is usually the fact that they revolve, at the expense of decent food.

I have been to the one in Berlin- the view is very interesting- the food is the worst I have ever had in Germany.

Donauturm in Vienna had quite respectable food.
Menara KL ditto, though the price was something on the order of a week's living wage at local rates. |
My rule?
Never eat in any restaurant that moves. Most of them, however, also have a bar area, so you're much better off having a drink and enjoying the view either before or after you have a decent meal somewhere else. |

Non-moving, but I'd say Vertigo or Sirocco in BKK should be in the top 10. The sage advice referenced applies here, too. ;) |
The Sundial in Atlanta atop the Westin hotel.
In years past, it was also known for the view and not the food but a recent revamp changed that. Last time I went, the food was quite good and the views are great. Though it's just Atlanta so no beautiful coast or mountains, it's still nice to be up so high. Over 700 ft (about 210 meters) up http://www.high.org/img/exhibitions/500_westin.jpg |

In Berlin, another option is the Reichstag's rooftop restaurant. Although non-revolving, the food is good (if pricey), and one great advantage is that a reservation number permits access to a special elevator which bypasses the (often-long) line of visitors waiting to go up to the dome.

You would be surprised how disconcerting a 1degree turn every 10 seconds does when you are tanked! I swear the room was spinning faster than it normally does! :D

You might encounter some difficulty at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. It moves... rather faster than that:

No revolving restaurants in Denver; the closest we have is the bar atop the new Hilton at the Convention Center. Spectacular views, no rotation until you've had a few...

In Providencia, Santiago, Chile there's "Restaurant Giratorio" (simply "Revolving Restaurant"). It's not really high up (maybe 16 stories?), but apparently it isn't too bad on the food front.
