Stinky tofu - it really smells like poop and I hope to never eat it again (but always end up having some when dining with Taiwanese friends)

-Fermented (stinky) tofu -raw sea cucumber (I was 15 at the time) -fish genitals, raw. -various raw seafood -raw sashimi with the still live fish looking at me In China -dessert containing bird phlegm (a delicacy, and I thought that was coconut milk) -another dessert made from warm OJ and frogs' egg sac membrane. Just like phlegm floating in juice. -whole grilled pidgeon with head, eyes, beak etc -tripe -fish head soup -grilled unpeeled prawns, eaten whole incl head -whole eel -chicken feet In France: -horse -snails -various terrines In Italy: -donkey salami In Australia: -crocodile -kangaroo -ostrich In Austria: -fermented whey cheese: stinky, but oh so tasty -blutwurst: congealed pigs blood -various game meats In Russia: -boiled cow's tongue -bear: my host shot the beast himself and was nearly killed by it. -various dried fish with beer. -caviar, most black types and salmon eggs 99% of that list has been truly enjoyable and tasty. For me, it is important to sometimes disconnect brains and/or eyes from the tastebuds. The head might reject a dish which might have otherwise been really tasty. Happy eating!! NG1Fan - - |

Supposedly anything esoteric or disgusting is "good for you" in some way, with the most usual description in Asia being that it "gives MAN power!".

Had my second go around with pigs blood - this time congealed with rice and sweet syrup...wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't be making a habit of it :)

I may win this contest. I once drank some Lao medicinal tea that included fresh cat placenta. Eeeeeek.:eek::eek::eek: I didn't know what it was and was warned not to drink it (without being explicitly warned exactly 'why' not to drink it) but I did anyway. Only later did I find out exactly what it was as well as wayyyy too many details about how it was obtained. (it was fresh)
Other than that I have had all manner of critter innards, the ordinary fermented fish and shrimp products (tastes fine, smell kills), congealed blood products (don't much care for that), street vendor dog (in Indonesia and Moslem Indonesians wont eat dog but the Kristian minority love it), snails in Viet Nam (not escargot, little pond snails served in a plastic bag). I ate bug satay once by mistake because they were cleverly disguised by pineapple and chillies but would usually draw the line at bugs. I've chickened out on balut the one time I was called upon to try that. I have to draw the limit somewhere. I have a long standing policy that if a host is gracious enough to place food before me, I eat it, smile and say it is good. Whether it is or not.:D;) |
In Kaiserslautern Germany I stumbled across a butcher shop that specialized in various cold cuts made from horse meat. They gave me a couple of samples, tasted fine, but I just couldn't bring myself to buying any to take home.
-Alligator, somewhere in Louisiana -Goat in Nuevo Laredo -Blutwurst in Germany -Black pudding in St. Andrews, Scotland (Blutwurst's fried cousin) -Octopus boiled in ink, Venice -Chitlins in South Carolina -Frog legs, in numerous places -Haggis in Edinburgh -Shark nuggets , at some fire department fundraiser I saw while driving along Highway 17, north of Charleston SC -Shrimp and Grits, numerous places in SC. Maybe it's weird, maybe not. But my friends in NY think it is downright bizarre. |

In Europe (The Netherlands): balkenbrij http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenbrij. Tasted pretty good: sautéed and with some sugar on a piece of bread. |
