My outdoor cats love ‘em, but I’m not above having a few myself. :D

I prefer the canned ones in a mustard or tomato sauce. Always on saltines. It's been years, but I have a can in my office for the next time I can't get away for lunch.

My cookbooks have lots of pictures of large sardines, usually shown grilled, but I've never seen them. I'll be in Rome and Naples next month and will be on the lookout.

Fresh sardines grilled (best on grape vine) like once served quay-side in Livorno. Magnifico!

Good canned Norways crushed with finely chopped onion and spread on crisp rye toast. One of the great snacks my mother prepared......

My wife hates 'em, but this sounds like ambrosia to me.

Of course, the worst tragedy in the US sardine world is the importer of Bela-Olhao sardines has quit the business. Can't find 'em anywhere. King Oscar just isn't the same. Any other recs for a high quality sardine?

Once again available (as of this week, I imagine, as they weren't in the store last week). Bought sever cans immediately. Ate them for dinner tonight on a nice, firm whole grain toast, with a bowl of homemade French Onion Soup, using some stock I made over the weekend with a new pressure cooker I was given and some oxtails I had in the freezer. Sooo good!!!!

Two weeks ago, we tried a new (for us) sushi bar, and the itamae handed me a sardine sushi without telling me what it was. Blew me away! I'd actually never had sardine sushi before, and I've eaten a lot of sushi. I do love fresh sardines too, as well as good sardines out of the tin. I never age them as some of the French do, but that could be interesting to do some day.

Had them grilled in Portugal. Wonderful^

Grilled, boiled new potatoes, fresh green salad. Preferably from a cafe where you can see the Tagus. So good that it I had had to be coaxed into not having them for lunch once during a week in Lisbon.

Grilled sardines in Portugal are delicious, but I grew up eating Club Des Billionaires ("Fish she is very small") sardines in oil right out of the can. Can of sardines + fork = happy Scarlet. Remaining sardine oil = happy cats.

Love the idea of having them grilled

We have Hooligan in Alaska (smelt) and can catch them by the netfull... when they are in - can get a couple hundred if not a thousand in a couple hours... My dad smoked a batch of them and they are amazing... most recently threw them in an omelet ^

I watched an episode of Chopped recently that featured fresh sardines. It certainly made me want to try them. Of course as it was Chopped, there was also unsweetened chocolate as an ingredient :D

The eye of the beholder (or the standards of the processing plant).

Look at it this way....

One lady may be convinced you're an anchovy, a second that you're a sardine, but another may feel that you're a kingfish.
